Just after sunrise, Maine Northern Railway Train 520-17 heads to Madawaska to rescue Train 530-16, during a blizzard. Train 530-16 had tied down at Madawaska, after not being able to make it back to Fort Kent the night before, after loosing a unit.
The week of 2/17/2025, MNR was slammed with storm after storm, with two previous storms dropping 2-4 feet in spots. From 2/16-17/25 MNR got hit with a blizzard which dropped an additional 3 feet of snow.
With the regulator at Fort Kent down for repairs, NBSR's Jordan Spreader headed to Saint John in preparation for an ice storm, and the Russell plow at Oakfield, MNR 520 had to fend for itself.
Before rescuing 530, the crew would work with a contractor who had a loader, as well as the section foreman armed with a backhoe, to pull and clean tracks inside the paper mill.

There is a young lady in Canterbury who rescues dairy cows that would otherwise go for slaughter. These two live a happy life on a friends lifestyle block
A boy and his dog. Not a model as such (either of them!) but naturally posing for me (with their mum's knowledge and permission) and I think you'll agree they are both natural cuties.

Ecclesiastes 8:8 “Just as no one has power over the wind to restrain it, so no one has power over the day of his death. Just as no one can be discharged during the battle, so wickedness cannot rescue the wicked.”
We stumbled by chance on a coast guard rescue operation while visiting Las Teresitas.
Helicopter and boats were searching around a specific spot on the coast.
We checked later and found out that tragically two young swimmers got trapped in a small cave and drowned before help arrived.
In the previous photo I described how I came to take these shots in the airspace outside our house. The Tamron SP 150-600 Di VC USD G2 lens performed admirably, especially when handheld and trying to catch a fast moving helicopter. In the overcast conditions a fast shutter speed and higher than normal ISO was essential, and I was glad that in this shot particularly 1/3200 was just enough to stop the rotors.
At 600mm the magnification of this lens is 144 times. So that will give you some idea of how far away the helicopter was - it wasn't exactly hovering over our house. But at least I didn't have to do much of a crop either.

In total, 5 siblings were rescued together with their mom when they were just one week old, by the Norwegian Society of Protection of animals in April. They were found among some insulation on a construction site.
I photographed them all last week, when they were 5.5 weeks old. Here is Miley in front. Her siblings are called Matheo, Mindy, Milas og Miam, and their mom Millie.

Central Maine and Quebec GP38-3M 3817 slowly creeps through Tarratine, ME on 4/15/2023. With train 121 all over the ground around MP-56, an extra out of NMJ was called to pull the underailed cars away from the wreck site.
121-15 hit a washout while doing 35-40 mph, sending three units and 9 cars into the drink. Based on the photos, the crew is lucky to have survived with only minor injuries. In the photos, one of the lumber cars landed upside down on the lead unit, before catching fire. Luckily some railfans who were chasing were in the right place at the right time, and drove the crew out to Demo Road (You know who you are). By the looks, all three units are a loss and the Moosehead Sub will be closed for a few days.

This one's for all the monotone lovers :-D
I had such a completely different idea for this....I shot it as a little red riding hood shot, believe it or not. I thought everything had gone so well. I thought it had worked out just as I had planned. And I guess it did...except that it wasn't as great as i thought it would be. Something was just missing. I did about 5 different edits and nothing felt right. I sat on this image for a while. I didn't want to look at it.
Then, after yesterdays picture, I had an idea to layer in clouds as smoke or fog. It was just what I needed to push past the editing block. I went in a direction I had never intended, and I was finally happy. This new year is about pushing myself and trying new things, even when I have no faith in the outcome.
I am going to do that today. I drew up 2 sketches of what I wanted to shoot today, 2 versions of the same thing. I've decided to shoot the one that I find more interesting and also more challenging. I might come home with nothing, but then again, even when a photo doesn't work out, I don't come home with "nothing"....I've learned a lesson, which is often better than any image that I could have come home with.
