My first soap carving was done spontaneously, developing from a quick test of my newly made carving tools into a stylised relief carving of a face that I made up as I went along, without referring to any external sources.
For my second attempt, I decided to take a slightly more methodical approach and begin with some sketches.
I was keen to have a go at a figurative carving as this is one of the main reasons I've restarted sculpture in the first place and it ties in with (and is very much inspired by) my attendance at life drawing classes.
At the last session I made several sketches of some of the poses from different angles with a view to potentially turning them into sculptures later. When I reviewed them I realised none had quite enough detail, at least for the relatively realistic style I was initially aiming for. Nonetheless I managed to adapt the sketches from one pose (aided by my general observations of this model, Cheyenne, over 3 sessions in the past month and my studies of life drawing and anatomy for slightly longer) into a reasonable starting point for a sculpture.
These are my working sketches. I started by measuring the soap block I was planning to carve and drawing the outlines onto the page, before sketching in the figure, in both front and side views. I did the boxes in pen in case I wanted to erase parts (or all) of the sketches to rework them, although on this occasion I didn't need to do this.
Rather than using the sketches as a careful template for the carving, I just kept them to hand as a reference while I carved, since I wasn't aiming for a particularly accurate reproduction.
