Very hastily put together shot today, so nothing very different with the setup.
The subject placed on a sheet of glass painted black on the underside.
Black background approx 12inches/300mm behind.
A pair of 20W CFL lamps placed to the sides in modified Pringles tube reflectors.
Between the lights and subject, a pair of screens containing tracing paper to soften the light.
Finally a couple of black cards placed behind the lights, to prevent stray light from hitting the background.
Job done and click ;-)

Giraffe: Uh-oh.
["Stage One: Denial"]
Giraffe: It's no big deal. It's probably not even quicksand. I'm gonna have a good laugh about this tonight with the guys. [Laughs nervously.]

When I saw this www.fatquarterly.com/quick-curved-ruler-brioni-2.html , I just had to make one for myself. I think these are one of the coolest blocks I've seen. I hope she takes it as a compliment that I copied.

Post USK-MTL meetup where Marc Holmes gave us a preview to his session on quick people sketching for the Urban Sketchers symposium this month, I tried a bit more when I got home. Still needs practise, but I find his tips useful for capturing man and otter-man alike.

When visiting New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen fans invariably want to visit the Stone Pony nightclub in Asbury Park. Kevin Smith fans, on the other hand, need to see the Quick Stop Groceries convenience store in Leonardo. Smith used to work there and it's where he shot most of his iconic first movie, 'Clerks,' in 1993 (and later several scenes for 'Clerks II').
“Clerks”
When Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) is reluctantly put in charge of the Quick Stop market on his day off, he tries, though half-heartedly, to perform his minimum-wage duties as efficiently as possible. This gets tough amidst the on-going fight with his girlfriend, Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti), and his attempt to get back together with his ex-girlfriend, Caitlyn Bree (Lisa Spoonhauer). Meanwhile, his friend and alter ego Randall (Jeff Anderson) is working behind the counter of the adjacent video store -- at least when he feels like it. Randall's unabashed disdain of his place of employment, a long with his self-admitted hatred towards its customers is a sharp contrast to Dante's feeble attempts at the niceties of customer service. Much of the film consists of Randall and Dante's criticism of their customers, their lives, and the world in general. Clerks, filmed in black-and-white on a budget of only $27,000, began the career of writer director Kevin Smith, who would go on to make Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001).~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide. ~ IMDb

I started my quick card 1/2 hour late and I am afraid it shows. Notice the upside down patterned paper. Oops! And that was the third try at it. But I think I got it in just under the wire.

this is the first time i had the chance to work from two live models at the same time. they knew each other (not biblically) so they weren't embarassed or awkward. they held a good pose for this one--reminds me of some of rodin's sculptures.
shit, i'm a pretty quick drawer by now, but i'm not a quick painter yet. i've seen a couple guys in LA practice quick painting and thumbnails using gouache or acryllic on these photo/scrap albums. a good cheap way to paint with a toned ground. i'm not used to just working with water to thin acryllics either--much different consistency than oils so it's frustrating. whatever. no apologies per se, just more practice ahead. for what it's worth, i do kind of like the composition. maybe if i use some latex thinner instead of water next time it will feel better. right now it's either watercolor or drying toothpaste consistency.
i think i'm going to try to redraw this from memory and imagination in a few days. i looked at the models pretty intently, and i think i've got a pretty good mental image of it.
