with the thoughtful support of Danspace Project and the Eureka Commissions Program by Onassis USA, deadbird is a film-reimagining of a live-work by devynn emory that was initially going to premiere at Danspace Project in NYC in spring 2020. this film is a grief space for devynn’s body as a hospice / COVID-19 nurse and spirit medium, and is also a balm to reimagine care. deadbird has always served as a container to process the intensity of nursing and honor the lives of those who have passed in their care. this became even more important during COVID-19.
in collaboration with Danspace Project, Onassis USA, Bartram’s Garden, and PICA, this project expanded to a national tour with deadbird and can anybody help me hold this body being presented in New York, Philadelphia, Portland, and LA. in each location, public grief altars will be tended by a local BIPOC artist who will be honoring the land they reside on and creating space for you. in Portland, this artist is Maya Vivas. if you are not in one of the touring cities or prefer to practice differently, instructions on how to create a grief space of your own are offered online at www.deadbird.land/at-home.
deadbird has and will continue to take many forms, and serves as a container to process and bridge devynn’s work in the world as an edgewalker, spiritual guide, bodyworker, choreographer, performer, and hospice nurse.

Could you also provide me with a few quotes by answering these questions:
What is your best memory of WSSU?
"My best memory was attending the Annual Biomedical Research Conference (ABRCMS) with the MARC U*Star and RISE NGIMS Program. It was a wonderful experience. I got to see friends I've made over the years from other institutions and the graduate school fair was extremely helpful in my decision for the next step. I also enjoyed volunteering at the organic garden down the street."
What do you love about WSSU?
"The faculty and administrators are VERY welcoming. They've provided meals for me, transportation to the airport, taken me to their church and even invited me in to their homes. They really look out for my well-being. I don't have any family nearby so its is wonderful to find so many people that are willing to make sure that I am okay. The same goes for students. WSSU truly fosters a familial environment."
What do you plan on doing after you graduate?
"I expect to start my biomedical sciences PhD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. I currently have plans to pursue neuroscience however, I am open to whatever presents the most interest during my rotations.
How has WSSU prepared you for the future?
"As a member of WSSU's RISE program, it is expected that we have something lined up post graduation therefore, they are more than accommodating for such preparation. They funded me and several other senior for Kaplan GRE prep, they granted us half off vouchers (we'd only pay $100 instead of the $200), and they wrote AMAZING recommendation letters for each school that I applied. They also guided me in writing my personal statement. In addition to my program, my amazing mentor Dr. Kanu did they same. He also nominated me for several awards that I didn't even know existed, incorporated me into his international Chemist without Borders Sierra Leone Project and facilitated three publications. He would drill me every poster presentation and made sure I was able to explain everything in the simplest way possible (which is not easy) so that any and everyone could understand. Because of his mentoring, I won a poster award at ABRCMS and I also received an honorary second place award through MARC/RISE for Scholarship Day. Presentations are VERY important in graduate school because it is necessary to be able to relay your research. As a transfer student, I don't think I would have found that type of support and encouragement anywhere else.
How has WSSU made a difference in your life?
"I came to WSSU as a transfer student. I walked away from a full scholarship and WSSU offered to support me for the remainder of my degree (shout out to the admissions department!). It provided a healthy environment to continue my education, conduct research and continue to explore my musical interests."

Two questions came to mind after comparing the before and after pictures of the California drought. The first was: Who is responsible? The second question was: How can we respond to this problem no matter who is at fault?
California is no stranger to droughts, but the state has been over-accommodating their own needs for water to keep our main state export businesses alive. The main culprits of drainage of the two man-made lakes is the farming industry, specifically the cattle and nut crops which are taking enormous water reserves to stay alive. Alfalfa (a superfood for cattle) is the biggest water drain, and nuts come second. As with many environmental problems, we tend to shoot, then point, then think, since economic pressure force us into immediate solutions. The water we have stored up (the reservoirs, aquifers) are being depleted at a rapid clip as if they will magically renew. Food prices are bound to soar and/or food sources will have to come from other states sinking California further into debt. The sociological gains could be increased education and awareness of the problem, which is necessary to galvanize people into actively participating in the solution. Hopefully more Americans will begin producing some of their own food and becoming more self-reliant.
These pics make me want to research what causes drought trends, what groups of people are on the forefront of innovation and adaptation to such problems, and how we can support them and participate.

From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Neats
The Neats were a Boston rock band that existed from the late 1970s to early 1990s. They first recorded for the independent Propeller label, which in 1981 released the song, "Six", a swirling, Vox-washed slab of garage rock reminiscent of Question Mark & the Mysterians. The following year, their well-received debut, 7-song EP, The Monkey's Head in the Corner of the Room, was released on Boston's Ace of Hearts Records. It was voted one of the best EPs of 1982 in the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop poll.[1] Three full-length albums followed. The band featured well-crafted songs and a psychedelic power pop sound in a similar vein as The Dream Syndicate and The Feelies. They occasionally played on the same bill as Mission of Burma; they once toured nationally with R.E.M..

Since our ownership of Angus and now Dusty our lawn, veggie garden and flowerbeds are up for grabs as a running track n field course. Hence, the fences to try and protect them. At the present time it is so far so good for this bed, the center room of our garden, not so much even with tomato cages lined up side by side. Dusty has made them into a obstacle course now, and the veggie garden, we have to put up a taller and stronger fence so they both don't pick/eat the ripe tomato's/ beans .
Oh well, We tried. Maybe the better fence will work for the veggies this year. Maybe.......

All questions: Here
Question 21: How would you evaluate your overall experience at PC, given its social and academic climate?
Oh boy. It's interesting. I'm sure with years my bitterness towards the general student and faculty attitude at PC will fade. Right now that it is, perhaps undeservedly, high.
First let me say that I carefully summarized my PC experience, and my advice from within that, here: toddpage.livejournal.com/281672.html [NOT edited]
Now, onwards to the question. In terms of academics, I bare no fault against P.C. I feel that I got a top-notch education. A heavily biased education, no doubt, but a top-notch education, regardless. I don't bear issue with the fact that theology and philosophy courses were required of all students. It's a catholic school, that should be expected. Do I wish there had been a class on other faiths? Yes. After all, most of the students there went to some amount of years of catholic education and already have a pretty good grasp of Catholic Doctrine. I loved Civ. For those of you who don't know PC, there is a required 2 year program that has 4 teachers and meets 5 days a week. It covers History, Literature, Philosophy, and Theology through pretty much all time. It's an amazing amount of information, and if you do the work, to me, rewarding. I also think that Dr. Scanlan's suggested updates to the program are brilliant. The school should totally get on that. There also needs to be more diversity in other course areas, and some faculty need to be reminded that not all students are catholic, and that they have a right to believe otherwise that the schools non-discrimination statement protects. I had a professor tell me I should drop her class because I did not believe the Catholic beliefs, more specifically, her beliefs. So naturally I stayed in it. No one tells me that. There is alot of improvement to be made there. Luckily there is a group of students struggling to make those changes. *fist in the air*
Now the social climate. PC is, as it were, a school full of cookie cutters. That is to say, it is full of people who all think the same, and feel the same, and approach things the same. Alot of these people will not accept or listen to anything that is different from that. The social climate at PC is awful. I lucked out in that I made the right friends. I found the kids who think for themselves [and that does not mean all of them thought in ways differently from the norm. It simply means they evaluated what they think, and are open to people thinking differently from them] This helped in a huge way. I also made friends with the kids working to change PC, or at least willing to resist being a part of the attitude that all that is different is bad. The theatre kids are great in that way, and being a part of the Vagina Monologues helped with that too. The administration, for those of you who don't know, shut down the Vagina Monologues at PC after 4 years of it being performed. We were already not allowed to advertise, and we had to perform in a classroom, but when the new president came in, he said he could not allow it to be performed. [The president's letter] This is absurd. It was a student production, and regardless of it's language or topics, it's cause is noble. Not to mention, that spring the official production was My Sister In This House, a play about lesbian incest. I don't think he realized what a movement that little letter began.
Whoa, tangent. The point is, even though PC itself is lame. I will not be giving them money, and most people I know who have very individual personalities, I would not send there, I ended up having a good experience. God I was SO sick of all the bullshit there by the end. And it is full of bullshit. Tons of it. And people whose only goal in life is to get totally shit-faced, and people who will only listen to opinions that mirror theres, and commentaries in the newspaper comparing homosexuality to cancer, and stating that when women get raped it's their own fault. It is full of stupid ridiculous people. I find I remember my friends and memories with them fondly. My program as well, and the CS teachers. And as I move away, I remember less the stupid idiots, faculty, and presidents, and all the bullshit there-in. The gasps when anything of a gay nature came up, the people who used fag as a commonplace slang for idiot. It all still makes me angry. I'd rate the school low. It claims to be desiring diversity, but really it only wants statistics. Everything about that school resists diversity. It is filled with Racist, homophobic, people who are afraid of different and change. My experience, however, was pretty good, all things considered. I got a good education, and a strong group of friends. And that's different from the school itself.
So even though I had to deal with sooo much bullshit, and spent tons of time fighting the man, I would say my EXPERIENCE was good, because of the people I surrounded myself with. If I hadn't had them, it would have been miserable.
Wow. That was more positive than even I expected.

The parents and godparents in place of their children and for themselves profess their faith and renounce the devil.
Dear parents and godparents:
You have come here to present these children for baptism. By water and the Holy
Spirit they are to receive the gift of new life from God, who is love.
On your part, you must make it your constant care to bring them up in the practice
of the faith. See that the divine life which God gives them is kept safe from the
poison of sin, to grow always stronger in their hearts.
If your faith makes you ready to accept this responsibility, renew now the vows of
your own baptism. Reject sin; profess your faith in Christ Jesus. This is the faith
of the Church. This is the faith in which these children are about to be baptized.

Photographed in Barrhaven on the Green.
What defines you?
My actions.
When were you born, and what do you see yourself doing in ten years?
I was born on October 7th, 1989, in Ottawa, Canada. In ten years, I will have my black belt in Aikido. I will have my career in order...and I'll own a house. All to myself.
What is your prediction for tomorrow's weather?
Tomorrow's weather? It's going to be sunshine...but cloudy in the late afternoon, and it might rain in the evening.*
What's your favorite kind of art?
It would have to be abstract expressionism.
Do you ever intend on changing your hair color, and if there were a book written about you, would you like to be a fictional character, or would it be autobiographical? And if you were a fictional character, what would you like written about you?
Regarding my hair, it's natural color at the moment, however I was blond as a child, and actually changed to brown. And yes, I think it would be fun to have some blond highlights one day, but I doubt I would keep them.
For the story, if there was a book written about me, I would prefer to be a fictional character, because as my hero Quentin Crisp once said, 'fiction is much better than reality.'
What would your character do, what would he be like?
My character would be someone who can...bring things from the fourth dimension, to help out people on this planet.
*Shawn's weather prediction almost came true; it was sunny throughout the day, then clouded up in the late afternoon. It didn't rain in the evening though.
