Known to be inhabited at least since the 6th century BC by Phoneticians, Greeks and Carthaginians, the area of the S. Jorge castle is referred clearly in historical terms since the conquest by the Romans, being believed that by the time some kind of defensive structure already existed.
With the fall of the Roman Empire under the hands of the “barbarians”, and in the 6th century of these to the Arab conquerors, this castle was always a stage of battles, especially during the Christian re-conquest of the territory, being frequently taken by Christians and later on by the Arabs.
Still, in 1147 by the hand of D. Afonso Henriques (the first Portuguese king) and with the help of crusaders that were going to the holy-land, the castle was definitively conquered after a siege of 3 months. The story tells that the knight Martim Moniz, taking notice that one of the doors of the castle has been opened rushed into it placing his body among them and sacrificing himself. He prevented it to be closed though and allowed for the conquest of the fortress.
After this event, the castle resisted successfully to several Arab conquest attempts from 1179 to 1183.
Becoming Lisbon, in 1255, the capital of the reign, the castle was converted into royal palace which lead for it to be attacked several times by the Spanish in the attempts to conquer Portugal during the 13th and 14th century.
But with the damage made along centuries by earthquakes, especially in 1755, and the change of the royal palace to the Tagus River shores the S. Jorge castle entered in long decline being used as prison and military head-quarters. It was recovered during the 1940’s and 1990’s and it’s one of the most important places to visit in Lisbon, as it has some of the most magnificent views over the river and especially the medieval quarters of the town.

The Question Quarterly

“I don’t believe in violence. But I don’t believe in being raped, either. So I’m walking around in the ruins of all my fine ideals, and I’m lost and lonely and desperate.”
Such is the underlying philosophy of “The Question”, a hard-edged, gritty look at the underbelly of society. The Question is a vigilante who dehumanizes himself to battle a dehumanizing city. In the current issue, he fights personal and impersonal demons to rush a dying child on the edge of death and the Brazilian rain forest to a Hub City hospital. She has no hope for life under the backwards medicine of South America.
Vic Sage is the face behind the mask, and his struggle is further complicated by an intriguing man named Marco. He prays to the patron saint of martial artists, Saint Bruce. And he saves Vic from almost certain death so that Marco can kill The Question, honorably.
It is not the only complication in this odd mixture of adventure, social comment, karate and pathos. And although young readers may buy the book for its jump kicks and captivating art, adults will find something more. The Question is engrossing stuff.
In what could be a stultifying superhero cliché, writer Dennis O’Neal and artist Denys Cowan forget flash over substance and take the reader inside Vic Sage, Marco, and Myra Fermin. It’s a fascinating study of heroism in the face of despair, of courage and horror growing from the same soil, and is certain proof that there are comics for adults that balance action with thought. Plot, dialog, characterization, and art all work together to make this a standout among comic books.
The only question left is why all comics aren’t this good.

Solar Orbiter will address big questions in space science to help us understand how our star creates and controls the giant bubble of plasma – the heliosphere – that surrounds the whole Solar System and influences the planets within it. It will concentrate on four main areas of investigation; very broadly:
Solar wind: What drives the solar wind and the acceleration of solar wind particles?
Polar regions: What happens in the polar regions when the solar magnetic field flips polarity?
Magnetic field: How is magnetic field generated inside the Sun and how does it propagate through the Sun’s atmosphere and outwards into space?
Space weather: How do sudden events like flares and coronal mass ejections impact the Solar System, and how do solar eruptions produce the energetic particles that lead to extreme space weather at Earth?
Solar Orbiter is a space mission of international collaboration between ESA and NASA.

The Church or Monastery of São Vicente de Fora; meaning "Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls" is a 17th century church and monastery in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the most important mannerist buildings in the country and also the burial site of most of the Portuguese Kings of the House of Braganza.
The original Monastery of São Vicente de Fora was founded around 1147 by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, for the Augustinian Order. The Monastery, built in Romanesque style outside the city walls, was one of the most important monastic foundations in mediaeval Portugal. It is dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa, patron saint of Lisbon, whose relics were brought from the Algarve to Lisbon in the 12th century.
The present buildings are the result of a reconstruction ordered by King Philip II of Spain, who had become King of Portugal (as Philip I) after a succession crisis in 1580. The church of the monastery was built between 1582 and 1629, while other monastery buildings were finished only in the 18th century. The author of the design of the church is thought to be the Italian Jesuit Filippo Terzi and/or the Spaniard Juan de Herrera. The plans were followed and modified by Leonardo Turriano, Baltazar Álvares, Pedro Nunes Tinoco and João Nunes Tinoco.
The church of the Monastery has a majestic, austere façade that follows the later Renaissance style known as Mannerism. The façade, attributed to Baltazar Álvares, has several niches with statues of saints and is flanked by two towers (a model that would become widespread in Portugal). The lower part of the façade has three arches that lead to the galilee (entrance hall).
Comic Book Fans and Creators join forces to do good at the 1st Annual “Heroes Helping Legends”. A weekend celebrating comic books while helping artists and writers in need.
Question: Who does a Living Legend turn to when in need of help? Answer: The fans. Everyone knows that they are the lifeblood of any creative endeavor. The fans have always "got your back." The 1st Annual "Heroes Helping Legends" event allows Chicago's comic book fans to give back to creators that have already given them so much joy and entertainment. Many of the art form's earliest writers and artists find themselves unable to make ends meet in their retirement and often lack adequate resources to cover medical expenses.
Now it is the loyal readers' turn to play the hero by attending a two-day mini-convention, Saturday, September 16th and Sunday, September 17th, 2006 at the Mercury Café, 1505 W. Chicago Avenue in Chicago. Fans will be able to hunt for literary treasure through a massive comic book sale, chat with local writers, get a unique sketch by local artists, and bid on range of one-of-a-kind art and collectibles all while enjoying the music of local bands. All proceeds benefit The Hero Initiative (www.HeroInitiative.org), formerly A.C.T.O.R. Comic Fund (www.actorcomicfund.org) - a national non-profit that provides financial assistance and a critical network of support to comic book industry veterans that have met with hard times.
This event is meant for fans of all ages and will be appealing to any collector on a budget. Most comics will be sold at the price of 5 comics for one dollar. To encourage sustained perusing, hint sheets will be sold to lead fans to prizes that are hidden in select issues. Local artists like Skottie Young and Andrew Pepoy will be on hand to draw sketches while bands with a comic book affinity like Daemon Familiar and Recent Photo will ensure that the Mercury Café is rockin'. The event will represent the diverse range of the comics medium so fans of underground slice of life stories will be as much at home as the fans of the capes and spandex set. The imagery and iconic power of comic book characters permeates every aspect of our culture and it is often the most enduring relationships that we will have with fictional characters in all of literature. It is up to all of us to make certain that those responsible for these beloved characters and stories are not left out in the cold once they have moved on from the limelight.

Depeche Mode are an English electronic band that formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group consists of founders Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, vocals, main songwriter since 1982), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards, bass guitar). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Original band member Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar, main songwriter from 1980 to 1981), left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over the lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, bass guitar, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next 13 years. Depeche Mode have been a trio again since 1995, when Wilder left.
