What is wrong with the majority of people on Flickr?!
In all of these groups all anyone does is tear each other down, degrading them in hopes that their photos will score higher, receive better comments, or attain more awards then the others and in a messed up way it works. It's simply disgusting the way people treat one another one here. I've seen shitty and fabulous photos alike torn to pieces because of a minor flaw, or mistake, or simply personal preference. Sorry to break it to you, but just because you prefer a wider or closer crop, more or less contrast, or whatever the case may be, does not mean that what they don't have still isn't good! Just because it's just not your style, doesn't mean it isn't still great. If I wanted the focus a specific way it would have been, but I didn't and so it isn't. Whenever I score, I never leave below a 6 because you don't know what people limitations are. You should comment on the photo for what it is instead of what it could have been and I never leave constructive criticism without at the very least reinforcing something that is great about the photo. How many time have you heard "a wider angle would have been great" and thought silently to yourself "trust me I tried, it didn't work" or some other aspect of the photo that someone would have 'liked to see' when it was beyond the reach of the time or simply not possible? No one else knows the effort you put into a specific shot or how proud you are of what you were actually capable of capturing and acomplishing despite the odds, situation and difficulties of the capture. So why not in return treat everyone else with the same trepidation and respect? You don't know what they could or could not have done differently and you shouldn't have to defend your photography in any way shape or form. Sure in other pictures from that set there may be better focuses and lighting because I'm sure if everyone is like me they tried all sorts of shots angles and perspectives. And you bet your ass if that's the look they was going for, they would have posted it. But I wasn't so they didn't. The look you would have gone for may not be the look the photographer in question was going for, for we are all different and enjoy different affairs.
Like the poor gentleman last night who's lovely picture of flowers I commented on, and in reading the comments saw another guy (I wouldn't venture to call him gentleman) demean the picture in every way and then ended with "next time try a side view with macro."
He took a picture of a poppy field in it's entirety, do you think he was going for a macro shot?! No matter what someones going to shit on. What happened to photography being fun, pure and innocent? Not everything HDRed, photo-shopped, layered or edited to pieces. Not that processes (as one of my Flickr friends pointed out) invalidate those as art forms, but people look at those creations - for that is what they are, created, not captured - and compare them unjustly to photography.
Thank you everyone and anyone on here who has ever supported me with comments, notes, contacts, or simply by casually perusing my stream. You will never know how much I appreciate it and you can still contact me here and keep up with me or my work.
But this is why I am leaving Flickr, at least for now until I can go back to that place where humanity doesn't bother me. But for now I must, because I'm tired. I'm tired of being hurt by people's harsh and unthinking comments. Tired of seeing my talented beyond belief friends being hurt out of jealousy and spit. Tired of people crappy attitudes towards each other on here in general. I am just tired. The world and it's people disgust me. I'm done with Flickr for now. Good-bye

The High Lakes Trail is one of the nicest trails I know of for a trail run, The surface is ideal; it is mostly flat but also has some nice hills, and the scenery is incredible. 5000 feet elevation. Today we saw a coyote. One time I ran right into a huge bear on the trail - who looked at me puzzled, and then ran away like a baby bunny rabbit.
Students ask questions to Grace Simon about her abilities in this introduction to her and her family in EECS 481 in the EECS Building on September 9, 2013.
Grace, 13-years old, was diagnosed with cerebal palsy at six months old and does not have the muscle control to speak, sign, or walk. Her mind is very capable, however, understanding the spoken language and reading the written word.
Students in EECS 481 are challenged this semester in designing and building systems that can make it easier for Grace to communicate, play, or be more independent at school or home.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone (Korean: 한반도 비무장지대) is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It is 155 miles (248 km) long and approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and is the most heavily militarized border in the world.
For over fifty years the areas surrounding the DMZ have been restricted to the general public. As a result, they have become a wildlife preserve containing incredible bio-diversity. The DMZ and its surrounding areas are now referred to as the Peace and Life Zone (PLZ), and a special tour course has been designed taking travelers to destinations of historical interest and outstanding natural beauty.

The Lisbon Oceanarium’s conceptual design, architecture, and exhibit design was led by Peter Chermayeff and it is said to resemble an Aircraft carrier.
It houses a large collection of marine species — birds, mammals, fish, cnidaria, and other marine organisms totalling about 16,000 individuals of 450 species.
The main exhibit is a 1,000 m2 (11,000 sq ft), 5,000 m3 (180,000 cu ft) tank with four large 49 m2 (530 sq ft) acrylic windows on its sides, and smaller focus windows strategically located around it to make sure it is a constant component throughout the exhibit space. It is 7 m (23 ft) deep, which lets pelagic swimmers to swim above the bottom dwellers, and providing the illusion of the open ocean. The water in the central tank is kept at a temperature that will allow both temperate and tropical fish to live here. About 100 species from around the world are kept in this tank, including sharks, rays, tuna, barracudas, groupers, and moray eels. One of the main attractions is a large Sunfish.
We had one meeting with the Indonesian Army General Staff. The most interesting aspect of this one was the question that we got regarding their perception of US intent to utilize "soft power" as its primary tool of statecraft in the new administration.
If I could break into the vernacular of my youth, I would say that the subtext on the question was, "...so now that you're going to be acting like pussies, how's that working for you?" You would have had to have been there to see the smile on the guy's face as he was asking the question. Bear in mind that this was primarily a group of men from two different military institutions and I wasn't the only one who picked up that tone.
We tried to give answers that would put our understanding of what the US is doing in perspective for them. Our State Dept. rep. emphasized the view that diplomacy should generally be one of the first tools employed to resolve international issues. My comment was along the lines that the real issue is how to use "smart power" which employs all tools of statecraft as required to address issues. My Marine Corps colleague summed it up nicely, noting that when they think of the US, they should think of the Marine Corps motto, "...no better friend, no worse enemy...we'll try diplomacy first, but if necessary we'll bring out the hammer." By the time we were done with that question I hope that they understood our point of view.....

Saturday School (SS) challenges participants with multidisciplinary classes that dissect, question, and illuminate various aspects of everyday life. SS is ongoing, continually inviting cultural producers who represent a variety of professional practices to participate in the temporary and nomadic teaching institution. Each instructor is asked to teach a course about something in which they are truly interested. Their lesson plans intersect many aspects of everyday life, their practices and their personal interests.
Claire Pentecost invites students to consider who gains what from the calories it consumes. How do economies of scale in food production inflate the scale of the super-size customer, and how is the fat distributed in regard to class and ethnicity? What are you permitted to know about your food and how do you take your knowledge? When the knowledge base of food production moves from farmer to corporate patent office, how can you get a balanced diet? When your'e eating proprietary data how can you tell if it's been cooked properly?
We will consider the French fries of the field and how a culinary aesthetic determined by Fordist strategies of production takes advantage of human cravings and squanders eco-cultural diversity. We will make stock of the ways food as a source of profit ceases to be a source of health. Genetically modified organisms will be served.
Claire is an Assistant Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she teaches photography, drawing, critical theory, and interdisciplinary seminars. Her background is in painting, but she engages a variety of media in her artwork to interrogate the imaginative and institutional structures that mediate our relations with the natural world. She was an Exhibits Specialist for the Bronx Zoo and, for three years, was co-organizer/curator of Four Walls, a non-profit forum for artist-initiated projects in Brooklyn. She has also published fiction, art criticism, and produced interviews and reviews for radio.

I was in Modena with some friends for the Italian Integra meeting. This ITR DC5 was very cool. Here in Italy we have 2 ITR DC5 and this one was the firt one on italian streets. It was imported from japan - england some years ago and the owner did some interesting mods during his ownership. I can confirm that the car is really cool!
Here the owner Vale (the guy with the cap) was nswered to the questions of all the guys of the meeting!
110,000 Throughout Ireland Protested Against 64 Billion Euro Bank Debt - Were You There?
Have you ever noticed how often the number 64 appears in headlines and on posters. We in Ireland have a 64 Billion Euro debt, or so we are told. It is interesting to note that "The $64,000 Question" was an American game show broadcast from 1955–1958, which became embroiled in the scandals involving TV quiz shows of the day.
The organisers of today's protest march claimed that over 110,000 people took part in the demonstrations.but according to local media and police estimates the total country wide turnout was about 50,000.
The largest event took place in Dublin and according to local police about 25,000 took part while the organisers claim that at least 60,000 took part (maybe 64,000 took part). Today an experienced journalist explained to me that the police count the number of legs and divide by two and the protest organisers count the number of legs and divide by one (BTW that's a joke).
To be honest I do not know if anyone is even trying to be accurate but the following statement was issued by the ITCU:

More than 110,000 people took part in demonstrations across the country today, in protest at the country’s continued bank debt burden.
The protests were organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and took place in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.
Over 60,000 took part in the Dublin protest, while at least 15,000 turned out in Cork, 13,000 in Waterford, 10,000 in Limerick, 7,000 in Sligo and 5,000 I Galway.
Congress General Secretary David Begg told protestors at a rally in Dublin’s Merrion Square that bank debt problem had not been solved by the recent deal.
He vowed Congress would continue its bank debt campaign until the link between private bank debt and national debt was clearly broken.
