ex-SR and ex-BR Maunsell Q-class 0-6-0 30541 under restoration outdoors at the former Dowty Railway Preservation Society site at Ashchurch in Gloucestershire.

When withdrawn by BR in 1964, 30541 fortunately was sold to Woodham's scrapyard in Barry, South Wales (see my photo of 30541's front-end in my 'South Wales scrapyards' flickr album). She was purchased for preservation from Barry, moved to the Dowty site, and has ended up at the Bluebell Railway when the Dowty site closed.

30541 is a Southern Railway, Q Class, 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by Richard Maunsell and constructed immediately prior to the Second World War, for use on medium-distance freight trains throughout the network. Twenty locomotives were built by Maunsell's successor, Oliver Bulleid, in 1938. The design was relatively old-fashioned and the class was soon afterwards eclipsed by Bulleid's own more powerful Q1 class 0-6-0's built in 1942. Nevertheless, the Q Cl;ass locomotives performed adequately and reliably until their withdrawal in 1965. Only 30541 has survived being retrieved from Woodhams Scrapyard in Barry in 1978 and was restored and now preserved on the Bluebell Railway.

30546 was designed by Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Southern Railway Richard Maunsell and was built in 1938. 30546 was withdrawn sometime between 1962 and 1965 and was 'cut up' at Woodham Brothers yard in Barry Wales.

Today's combined Wealden Rambler and Wedding special hauled by Maunsell S15 No. 847 rounds the curve towards the remains of Town House Bridge before continuing its climb to Horsted Keynes and beyond. The Northerly wind carried the bark from its exhaust so well that it could be heard climbing all the way to Horsted Keynes, and levaing again shortly after. Superb!
