Eating out has not been this cheap in years, as the touristic bars struggle to pull in customers thanks to COVID. Unsurprisingly, less touristic areas have suffered far less - although restrictions on opening hours and capacity have taken a heavy toll everywhere.

After a long rainy winter season on the west coast we finally had some snow in the last couple of days. Shot this just very quickly and handheld from a nice vista point near home right after the last visit to the mall before Christmas eve. It's captured in one RAW-exposure intentionally underexposed 3 stops at lowest ISO and pushed several stops in the shadow areas for maximum dynamic range. Processed in Lightroom 2 using graduated filters and adjustment brush for the dodging and burning, to get the desired light in the scene.
I think it's got a arctic feeling to it somehow... View Large On Black
Happy Christmas!
I forget the chronology now, but back in the 1970s the completion ...or should I say the delays to the completion... of the motorway bridge across the mouth of the River Avon was a long-running local scandal. The Bristol Evening Post loved it: would there be no end to the exposés, "missing link" articles and "bridging the gap" headlines they could get out of it? It ran and ran. Then, when the bridge finally opened, it was almost immediately found to require strengthening. Lane closures lasted for years, but by narrowing those that remained they pretended that capacity was not reduced. It was cones everywhere. Traffic on important motorway river crossings always seems to exceed what was expected; remember the original Severn Bridge, which eventually had to be duplicated? Miles and miles of traffic form here every summer weekend. Goodness knows how many times I must have driven across: all those journeys on the Clevedon limited stops and for four years this was my route to and from work.
A more leisured crossing on this occasion. I agreed to drive the Missus to visit some old neighbours of ours on the condition that I could drop her off, "do my own thing" and pick her up later, putting in a token "good manners" appearance for the half hour before we left. This is not to express any displeasure in the company of our old neighbours, who are good and pleasant people (and who, after all, may read this): if anything I imply a criticism of myself ...open book that I am. At twoish in the afternoon in November I was rapidly losing the light but, anticipating this, I'd upped the film from 400 to 800 ASA. I've not often "pushed" film in the past, but it can be a handy technique and doesn't seem to involve any serious loss of quality. Some cropping of the original square negative, giving a slight "optical zoom" effect.

I tried a couple of things with this one. Firstly I tilted and swung the lens to try and create more of a 3D, tunnel type, of effect....didn't really work. And secondly, I tried to get this out of the wind as much as possible while still centering the south celestial pole....that didn't really work either as it looks like there's been a big movement on the tripod after about 20 minutes or so. I also didn't want anything in the shot but stars....none out of three so far...
All in all I still really like it though. Had a few beers....obviously too many....and met a really nice guy, one of natures gentlemen, and fellow photographer, Whitefella Walkabout.

Had a chance to visit the 9/11 memorial for the first time last weekend. I took some photos, although those were for me to remember more than to post.
Before turning around, I had a walk over to the Hudson and saw this fellow sitting at the end of a row of benches. Took a shot as the light fell.
