Gorgeous afternoon yesterday meant a good opportunity to burn a second roll in my F3HP, I had one roll of Tmax 100 left and I decided to try rating it at ISO 50 and also go with a super diluted rodinal stand development with minimal agitation. I am really impressed with the results and I've only scanned 10 shots so far!

All of them are with the F3HP and 105/2.5. The chemistry setup was;

Rodinal 1:100

3 agitations initially (not quite inversion becuase I had a double tank that was only filled up to cover the one roll*)

3 agitations at 30 min

Timer was set for 59 min but I missed the cut off, probably went 1 hr 10 min or so

*I only filled it up to cover the one roll becuase I was thinking that the idea of stand developing is for the developer to slowly exhaust itself and I worried that having twice the needed developer, even with limited agitation might lead to extra development that I didn't want. Not sure this is true maybe someone can educate me.

**Second 'innovation' to me I forget where I read this, I think it was on photo.net's b/w darkroom forum but I managed to not squeege this roll preferring to do a normal distilled water with photoflo final water bath then I hung the roll slightly diagonally in my shower to dry. Some combo of getting a low enough photoflo dilution and the diagonal resulted in extra clean images compared to what I'm used too.

The decision was made late in developing to place this roll of 400tx-like emulsion directly out of the fixer under the running water in the sink: a 3°C temperature gain. It produced the predictable astigmatized micro-reticulated results in the film: soft edges and clumpy grain. Roll #93, Plus-X, although being developed simultaneously in the same tank and subject to all the same processes, came out the better for wear as I've come to expect of that particular emulsion.

One might think it could be attributable to this roll being pulled to 200 or a 1:25 dilution being used rather than 1:50, but experience points to temperature variation during processing, during the wash cycle in particular. And, again I must marvel, the phenomenon seems to only occur when the wash medium is warmer than the chemicals; Colder wash water seems to actually improve results!

And then, we have our demonic wild card factor: the ambient temperature of the room in which the film dries!

The beautiful little side garden at St. Peter's in Capitol Hill caught just a touch of afternoon light a couple weeks ago as I was walking by. I liked how it gave a nice rim of light on the statue of the Virgin's shoulder and also lit up the grasses in front, I wish I'd separated the two a bit more in my framing to show the juxtopositioning fo the two features illuminated but I think its still kind of cool. This is a shot that was really made decent through stand development in my opinion, so much is in shadow that the long development pulled plenty of detail and created nice tonality. In LR I did mess with the curves to make the statue a bit more middle grey to bring out detail.

Pity she likes to see instantaneous results when it comes to taking photos, I have a feeling she has an affinity for manual focusing and classic cameras if only she'd give it more of a try.
