Some explanation - the fabric is to keep bits of my corrugated iron ceiling from dropping onto the paintings (which get varnished flat and horizontal). The dry brush on the table is for cleaning the surface of the painting of dust first. The brush-on varnish goes on first, matte finish of course. The spray varnish (same type of varnish) is for the last coat (or two) just to equal out the finish and/or cover any bits that might have gone slightly wrong.
Slightly wrong this time around was pinholes in the brush-on varnish, wipe marks from something bumping the painting (probably my bum, haha!), streaking in the varnish, and fallen dust in the surface. These mean first trying a spray to fix it if appropriate, or unvarnishing the whole piece with cloths soaked in white spirits. At this point insert various sighs, swearing, and sobbing when I realised the painting that needed a total re-do was the 120x150cm one.

The space shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) is the barrier that protects the space shuttle during the searing 3000° F (1649° C) heat of atmospheric reentry.
High-temperature reusable insulation (HRSI) tiles (black in color) provide protection against temperatures up to 2300° F (1260° C). There are 20,548 HRSI tiles which cover the landing gear doors, External Tank umbilical connection doors, and the rest of the orbiter's under surfaces. They are used in areas on the upper forward fuselage, parts of the orbital maneuvering system pods, vertical stabilizer leading edge, elevon trailing edges, and upper body flap surface as well. They vary in thickness from one inch (2.54 cm) to five inches (12.7 cm), depending upon the heat load encountered during reentry. Except for closeout areas, these tiles are normally 6 by 6 inch squares (15.2 by 15.2 cm). The HRSI tile is basically a composite of high purity (99.8%) silica fibers (10%) and empty space (90%) that exhibits ceramic bonding. The high percentage of voids is the reason for the low density (9 lb/ft³) of the material making it light enough for spaceflight and strong enough to withstand the required G forces. The HRSI tiles have the black glossy appearance because of waterproofing coating made of tetrasilicide and borosilicate glass. Each tile has an identification number which tells batch and locations.
