I found using a viewfinder very difficult, but I can see the benefit of it, both in terms of composition AND accuracy. The trick for me will be to figure out how to use it just enough so I don't get frustrated with it!

Italian postcard by Nuova Arti Grafiche Ricordi, Milano, no. 1603. Illustration: Disney. Publicity still for One Hundred and One Dalmatians (Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, 1961).

One Hundred and One Dalmatians (Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, 1961), often abbreviated as 101 Dalmatians, is an American animated adventure film produced by Walt Disney and based on the 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. The 17th Disney animated feature film, the film tells the story of a litter of Dalmatian puppies who are kidnapped by the villainous Cruella de Vil, who wants to use their fur to make into coats. Their parents, Pongo and Perdita, set out to save their children from Cruella, all the while rescuing 84 additional puppies that were bought in pet shops, bringing the total of Dalmatians to 101.

Dodie Smith wrote the book The Hundred and One Dalmatians in 1956. When Walt Disney read it in 1957, it immediately grabbed his attention, and he promptly obtained the rights. Smith had always secretly hoped that Disney would make it into a film. Originally released to theatres on 25 January 1961, by Buena Vista Distribution, One Hundred and One Dalmatians was a box office success, pulling the studio out of the financial slump caused by Sleeping Beauty, a costlier production released two years prior. Aside from its box office revenue, its commercial success was due to the employment of inexpensive animation techniques—such as using xerography during the process of inking and painting traditional animation cels—that kept production costs down. The film was re-released theatrically in 1969, 1979, 1985, and 1991. The film's total domestic lifetime gross is $145 million, and its total worldwide gross is $215 million. One Hundred and One Dalmatians was first released on VHS in 1992, as part of the Walt Disney Classics video series. Two months later, it had sold 11.1 million copies. At the time, it was the sixth best-selling video of all time.It was remade into a live-action film in 1996. Disney has announced that another live-action film is in development, but it will focus on the origin of Cruella de Vil. Emma Stone is set to play Cruella. Hal Erickson at AllMovie: "101 Dalmatians represents the Disney animation staff at its very best, and as a bonus introduces the world to Cruella De Vil, one of the greatest movie villains--cartoon or "real"--of all time."

Prompt: vintage painting depicting a young African American boy sitting at foot level in front of a classic 1940s barber shop, attentively learning from his father. The father, African American, sits in a wooden chair, holding a newspaper. The boy, wearing worn 1940s attire, a flat cap, and oversized, scuffed but polished shoes, busy urban neighborhood. The father is sharply dressed in a well-fitted pinstripe suit, fedora, and polished shoes, The two are seated outside the barber shop, a small wooden shoeshine box beside them, the barber shop’s lively atmosphere captures the essence of the era, with neighborhood figures walking by, talking, A few vintage cars are parked along the curb, and the city’s tall brick buildings and retro signs stand in the background, The painting’s palette blends warm sepia tones and soft grayscale, mimicking the texture of an aged black-and-white photograph with soft brush strokes, intricate shadows, and lighting that enhances the emotional depth of the scene. This composition portrays themes of mentorship, pride, and ambition, capturing a poignant moment of family connection, resilience, and the shared values of hard work and perseverance in a transformative era of American history. --stylize 50 --v 6.1

Best viewed on black (L). Last Saturday’s south westerly gale prompted me to try a shot of the Great South Wall in Dublin Bay being swept by waves – unfortunately this also requires a high tide which occurred at 7.53pm. I wasn’t sure about doing this at night but I thought I would at least try a reconnaissance – and this was the result. Because of the neap tide and the length of time it took to set up the shot, the sea was not breaking over the pier but I still like it.

I took it with a second hand Canon 24-105mm lens – on loan from Conn’s Cameras while a problem with the image stabilization on my second hand 17-55 is being repaired under guarantee. The settings were 55mm for 190 seconds at f11 and ISO 400 – while mounted on a Manfrotto 055CX3 tripod. Even with a half moon, albeit above thin clouds, it was too dark to frame or focus either in the viewfinder or in liveview. Instead, I took 4 second test exposures at f4 and ISO 1600 until I got the zoom and framing I wanted – then it was a matter of multiplying up the time by 5 stops (3 for aperture and 2 for ISO) and adding 50% because I thought the test exposures were a bit dark - and because I wanted to minimise noise in the dark areas at the ISO 400 setting - and this was a reconnaissance so I didn't want to do the 12 minute exposures that ISO 100 would demand. I was also concerned about shake from the wind even though I stood in the shelter of the blockhouse at the last car park and I hung the camera bag on the tripod for additional stabilisation. On the other hand, if there is shake on a three minute exposure, it probably won't be any worse in a 12 minute exposure. In the absence of a high powered torch to light nearby rocks, there was enough light on the North Bank Lighthouse some 400m to my left (not in shot) to manually focus on that in Liveview. Finally, I had to wait for a ferry to pass out beyond the Poolbeg Lighthouse and move to the right out of the frame as it sailed south of the Burford Bank in the Bay. Actually, I took a similar exposure while I was waiting which gave the mother of all light trails - but that was far too dominant! The main edits in Lightroom involved setting the white balance to auto because that took out the orange tones from the street lights followed by adjustment of the tone curves make the sky and water really dark.

The brightest light is from the Baily Lighthouse with the green light of the North Bull Lighthouse to its right. The Poolbeg Lighthouse is 1.7km away at the far end of the Wall with the white Half Moon bathing shelters at about 900m. I was puzzled that there are starburst effects on the Baily and North Bull Wall lights whereas the lights from the buoys along the horizon are blobs – I think this is because the latter would have been swaying on the choppy waters.

Prompt: Create a vibrant, ultra-high-resolution 3D digital illustration featuring a heart-shaped patriotic emblem. At the center of the heart is a majestic bald eagle with a sharp yellow beak and intense golden eyes. The eagle is surrounded by detailed, layered feathers in vivid red, white, and blue, resembling the American flag. The interior of the heart includes star patterns on a deep blue background, symbolizing the U.S. flag’s canton.

Surrounding the heart are glowing white stars and dynamic swirling light trails, adding movement and energy to the composition. The background features a dazzling sky filled with multicolor fireworks red, blue, gold, and purple—bursting in celebratory arcs.

At the top of the image, in bold, elegant script or classic Americana block text, include the words: "July 4th" in red, white, and blue gradient coloring.

Style: 3D, Digital illustration, ultra-detailed, semi-realistic with artistic flourish

Mood: Patriotic, powerful, celebratory

Lighting: Backlit with fireworks and glowing star accents

Color Palette: Red, white, blue, gold highlights, deep night-sky tones

Resolution: Ultra-high

Yesterday's prompt for my 365 was "A Story In Three" but as I was more or less all day at the hospital with a very sick relative, no stories happened!!

I am therefore going to double this up for my Daily Challenge (of the other day) and my 365. My Kindle is very personal and there is more than one story within - the top three books are just three of many within!

This week's prompt is "What I'm Reading" for the Instagram project #portraitsofme. I've really been enjoying reading again and have gone through three books in the last two weeks. My mom was taking a book back to the library a couple of days ago and I asked if I could tag along to check out one for myself. The Tye Preston Memorial Library located in Sattler is really quite an impressive library for a small lakeside community. I love perusing titles, picking up book after book, reading the dust jackets, then making my final selection. I ended up checking out a book called "I Liked My Life" by Abby Fabiaschi. Though the plot is sad (it's about a mom who commits suicide), the characters are rich and the storyline compelling. Having lost two moms I've known to suicide, I've often wondered what pain they were hiding from their loved ones that drove them to take their lives without any indication of depression. If I were part of a book club, I would highly recommend this for study and discussion.

The perfect prompt for these photos! This is my niece and I did not have anything worthy of "the cutest belly button I have ever seen" to say about these pics. And this design did not lend itself for journaling anyway.

The red striped heart in the center really really bugs me so I might find something different to go under the title but for now it is done!

5.Desire

As an initial disclaimer for this piece, the heart that I used is an animal heart that I got from a biological classroom supply company. It was part of some sort of a classroom dissection kit, and I wanted to use it to really communicate this concept effectively.

For this prompt I not only defined desire, but also illustrated the ramifications of desire. In actuality desire has a very open definition, and when looking through the definitions given for desire in the dictionary, I felt that they were so rigid that they were almost untrue. Desire really has no rigid definition, it's not entirely a verb or a noun, nor is it purely an emotion or an object. Desire is so complex that it cannot be labeled in one way. So for this prompt I have created a book with photos to illustrate a less rigid, yet still defined definition of the basic similarities of most examples of desire, and the ramifications of desire. I chose to specifically concentrate more on the emotional aspects of desire, viewed in a slightly humanized way. My book is designed to also illustrate the ramifications of each aspect of desire, while the poem defines it. I also chose to make the cover text reflective and almost reminiscent of a mirror to depict how personal definitions of desire reflect upon the individual.

Specifically the first page is intended to illustrate how desire will consume you, and the very serious results of this. I felt the heart was fitting because in both a very trite and a more serious symbology, it depicts giving up your life, which is the emotional aftermath of when desire consumes and creates "reaping feelings" as I said. I felt this part of my definition had the most serious ramifications, so therefore the photo used to illustrate it needed to be equally serious to depict and communicate this accurately. The second page is intended to depict how desire leaves us with humanized ideas of actuality, and the conclusion of this is that we are left somewhat isolated with a distorted vision of events. The third page is intended to follow this same concept in that desire makes us break apart our visions of events to create objective pasts. It is actually proven by many scientific experiments that our memory is mostly made up of small series that we continue to tell ourselves, and I feel that desire is a factor that changes how we choose to remember things. The result of this is a distorted view of the past, which can constantly change us. The fourth page is intended to depict how desire is really just a series of lies that we create, which will leave aspects of our lives empty. This creates an empty and isolated life, which is depicted by the symbolism of blood for life, used in a scene that represents isolation. I also feel that it depicts the rituals that a vapid lifestyle creates. For my last page I wanted to define what desire is confined by, which is the "cage" humanity lives in. This metaphorical cage is defined by both social aspects and mortality, which are essentially most of what also creates and confines desire. This creates the reality that whether we embrace or resent desire we are all bound by the same fragility. So to depict this I wanted to illustrate it somewhat literally, while also alluding back to my concept on the first page.
