In March 2011, another photographer and I explored this sad old mill and the rot wasn’t nearly so advanced. As we gingerly walked through, we could hear the floors creak creak creak … but they held, mainly because they were frozen and because we mostly stayed on the metal pathway that you see down the middle of this picture. (Each level has one of these metal mats, probably to allow heavy carts to roll smoothly on the wooden floors. They had the benefit of spreading our weight over several joists.)
In July 2011, I popped back in for a quick photo, stepped off the metal path, and promptly punched one foot through the thawed-out floor. Four years later I cautiously return … the floors are now like compost heaps in places, remarkably rotted. There are three separate collapse zones in this image, near, middle and far. With the right positioning, you could easily fall through two or even three levels like a cartoon character, except not nearly as funny.
This was shot through the door from the stairwell, which is still very solid.
