One of the main objectives of the European Union is to promote economic, social and territorial cohesion between regions. The reformed EU Cohesion Policy 2014-2020 comes at a pivotal moment. Recent years of austerity have seen rising unemployment and widening inequality, especially in peripheral regions, with youth, women and ethnic minorities worst affected.
Making over €350 billion available to invest in Europe's regions, cities and the real economy, the reformed Cohesion Policy is the EU's principal investment tool to deliver the Europe 2020 goals: creating growth and jobs, tackling climate change and energy dependence, reducing poverty and social exclusion. Once member states’ national contributions and the leverage effect of financial instruments are taken into account, the impact is likely to be over €500 billion.
Launching a new partnership with the European Commission, with the participation of the OECD, Salzburg Global’s program is timed to help key stakeholders understand the rules and results-oriented focus of the reformed Cohesion Policy and ensure maximum impact for these investments. It will build on our longstanding European program which has featured over 15 sessions devoted to the EU’s development and expansion, grounded in our location at the crossroads of East and West.
The 2014 program will focus on ways in which regional development policy and complementary instruments can enhance competitiveness and effective governance at local, regional and transboundary levels.
Participants will examine tools for environmentally sustainable innovation, human capital development, creation and financing of SMEs and the transition to a low carbon economy. They will compare practical projects and mechanisms that have delivered successful outcomes for competitiveness and inclusive growth, in and beyond Europe, in order to identify transferable tools and connect stakeholders who are leading cutting-edge work around the world.
The program will be held from May 17 to May 22, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria, with a one day, high-level pre-session meeting on May 17-18, focusing on European competitiveness, the shift to low carbon economies, and the role of sustainable cities.
This is a photograph from the annual Rita and Robbie's Christmas 5KM promoted by Navan AC and held at Claremont Stadium Navan in Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Thursday 27th December 2018 at 12:00. Just under 500 people took part making it one of the best attendances for this event in recent years. The weather for racing this year was a complete contrast to the weather from last year. In 2017 the weather was very cold with the frost from the night making road conditions icy and slippery. This year the race was held in relatively mild conditions with little or no breeze. All in all a perfect December day. There was an excellent club representation from around County Meath and surrounding areas.
The race started outside Claremont Stadium on the Robinstow Road and finished on the tartan track within the grounds of the stadium. The race followed a well known and historic 5km route which takes in the Navan Trim road moving onto Beechmount before turning back onto Navan Robinstown road back to the stadium. This route was used many times in the past for previous races hosted by the Navan Clubs. This photograph is part of a large set of photographs from today's race which is available on Flickr here at www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157674916720797
The race is dedicated to Rita Brady and Robbie Byrne who are both stalwards of athletics in Navan with both having given a lifetime of service to the promotion of athletics in the town of Navan and beyond. Both of their involvement with Navan-based athletics can be traced back not just in years but in decades - back to the 1940s, 50s and 60s and in more recent times. The race today is a suitable way of honoring their work and dedication.

I got promoted! Actually it is the rank I enlisted with but they screwed up the paperwork and didn't know I was an E-2 upon enlistment and a good thing for me.
I left for basic training on a flight from Ohare in Chicago IL and got stuck on a seat next to a guy who looked like Charlie Manson and he talked all the way to texas about how much fun it would be. Do you think we'll get a maching gun to shoot? I can't wait to go to war! I'm gonna do this and that and the other thing. OMG I wished the guy would just shut up, but on and on we went. Even to this day I don't have a clue where we landed but remember getting off the plane and all these sergeants were there with clipboards and screaming at us assholes to form up in ranks, but nobody knew what that meant except me because I had four years of Army ROTC training in high school. Didn't help much in this situation, but we finally managed to get into a line and they put us on busses and took us to the Air Base for more processing and more paperwork to fill out and sign. We were super tired and it was like O dark O'clock when we finally got to our barracks only to find more shit to listen to even though some guys were falling asleep as they stood. That's when we met SSgt Lundsford. We got a speech about duty, honor, country..then an ass chewing like you wouldn't believe about how we were grabastic pieces of shit, but how he would help us become fucking human beings worthy of serving in the armed forces of our country...on and on it went, he picked out a few people to personally villify and knock around, but finally we got to go to our bunks and sleep. It was around 3am (0300). Too bad that revelie was at 0600, and we got a rude awakening with SSgt Lundsford screaming lots of nasty stuff and dumping bunks over spilling the sleeping occupants on "his" shiny floor and fucking it all up! He checked his roster and asked if anyone had ROTC training and I almost raised my hand, but heard him mumble...oh, we don't have any..good...I hate those assholes and love to fuck with them, so I put my almost raised hand back down. It was a wise decision too.
My plane buddy who looked like charlie manson looked alot different when he got his beard and head shaved off, but he still went on about how he was going to be a war hero. But that only lasted two days. He was so frightened by the TI he ran across the upper floor of the barracks on the second day and right throught the window and screen...I saw his body hit the grass outside the barracks and roll off in spasms. They called an ambulance and took him away...not that big a hero I guess. Another guy tried the same thing the next day but couldn't manage to break throught the glass and screen. But after these guy were weeded out we got down to the business of...marching alot and playing robots. I liked it.

This is a photograph from the Tullamore Harriers AC "Quinlan Cup" Half Marathon which was held on Saturday 29th August 2015 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland at 12:00. This is the third year of the event. The race is organised and promoted by Tullamore Harriers AC. The race starts on the Charleville Road just outside the entrance to Tullamore Harriers. The race proceeds south along the R421 and onto the N52 before taking a route onto local back roads. The race then completes a large rural road route before it joins to the R421 again and the final 1.5 miles are the same as the first mile of the race. The runners enter Tullamore stadium and complete one lap of the tartan track before the finish line. The course is challenging in places with some undulations along the route. But overall it is fair course. 2013 seen the first year of the event as the club commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the formation of Tullamore Harriers AC which today is one of Ireland's best known athletics clubs.
The race was perfectly organised. The weather was good for racing but there was a very strong headwind for the first 6 miles of the race which made the conditions difficult. The weather was dry and warm except for the torrential downpour at around 1:45pm which cleared the whole finish area of spectators and runners. There were stewarts all along the route, 3 drink stations with bottled water, superb facilities, and great after-race refreshments. The stewards along the route provided great encouragement to all of the runners. Tullamore Harriers and the local community really worked together to make this is a wonderful event. There was also a relay option where teams of two can run approximately 10.5km each. In total almost 700 participants took part. This was higher than the 568 participants who completed the race which is almost 150 more than the 2013 event.
We have a large set of photographs from today's race at the start and the finish until the 2-00 finish time. They are available on Flickr at www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157655560294853

As mentioned above this race half marathon started in 2013 and celebrated the 60th Anniversary (a Diamond Anniversary) of the foundation of Tullamore Harriers AC. The club was formed in the town in November 1953. However, it was almost 1979 before facilities close to what we see today open in the present day site. Over 50 provincial and national athletics meetings are held at Tullamore Harriers every year. The facilities available combined with it's central geographical location joining routes from North, South, East, and West make it a very attractive venue. The half marathon today firmly brings competitive national road racing back to "The Harriers". The Quinlan Cup which will be awarded to the winning club team. For more than 40 years the Harriers Quinlan Cup was the most prestigious event on the road racing calendar. Having started as a cross-country race back in 1957, it became a road race in 1967 and remained so until 2000 when the race was last held. During its reign as a blue-ribband event the Quinlan Cup was won by the likes of John Treacy and Eamonn Coughlan.
Today, the facilities at Tullamore Harriers are the envy of many athletics clubs in Ireland. The facilities provided by Tullamore make it one of the premier venues for local and national level athletics in Ireland. There is an Olympic standard tartan track, a fully equipped gym, changing facilities, press and media facilities, meeting room spaces, etc. The club also provides a social center and niteclub which makes "The Harriers" a very well known on the local social scene. Esssentially, the town of Tullamore would be a different place if it weren't for the presence of Tullamore Harriers AC.

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not charge for our photographs. Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.
I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?
You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.
I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?
If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

This is a photograph from the 3rd round of the 2017 Pat Finnerty Memorial 5KM Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 17th May 2017 at 20:00. The Road League is promoted and organised by Mulligar Harriers Athletic Club and sponsored by local sponsors including O'Brien's Renault dealership. This is a very well established as an annual event which takes place on every Wednesday night in the month of May. Following on from the great weather from last week's race this evening's racing seen a more changeable evening. There were some heavy showers earlier in the dead and the sky showed the possibility of rain. There was a strong headwind facing the runners in the first kilometer of the race. As this was the third out of four races in the league there were slightly less participants tonight. Just under 200 participants took part in the race which runs a traffic free course over a mix of road and hilly forest trail.
Timing and event management was provided by http://www.myrunresults.com/. Their website will contain the results to today's race.

This is a photograph from the 6th annual running of the Meath Spring Half Marathon and 10KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were promoted and hosted by Bohermeen Athletic Club at Bohermeen, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 12th of March 2017 at 11:00. The half marathon consists of a 11KM and 10KM repeated loop around the roads of Bohermeen and Oristown. The 10KM race just completes the 2nd part of the half marathon. The finish line is on the running track within Bohermeen Community Center. The course is a fast fair course with a few small hills. Last year the course was 'reversed' which just meant that the traditional course changed to accomodate the large number of participants and the narrow country roads on which both the race participants and race traffic must both share before, during and after the race. Most runners agreed that this made the course much faster as a result. There was almost a total of 1,000 participants in both races.
The other great variable in road racing - the weather - was dry, clear but rather windy. At several parts of the course there was a stiff headwind which made these sections that bit more difficult. Temperatures were around a seasonal 10C for this time in March in Ireland.
Bohermeen AC is steeped in Irish athletics history since 1927 and it is this experience and exceptional community spirit and volunteering which has made this event today so successful. Having now organised the event for six years running it is certain that the event will continue to grow and expand become one of the mainstays on the Irish athletic club road racing calendar for many years to come.
This race takes place about one month after the Bewley's 10 Mile Road Race in Trim (just down the road from Bohermeen). Indeed these races truly kick-start the whole road racing season of fixtures amongst the clubs in Meath who are now famous for the quality and standard of the road races staged and organised.
The race is supported by substantial local sponsorship from businesses in the local area. McNally Logistics and Transportation are the main sponsors of this year's event. The company specialises in national and international haulage.
Timing and event management was provided by http://www.myrunresults.com/. Their website is here [www.myrunresults.com/] and will contain the results to today's race.

If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.
I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.
I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?
If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Fort Buchanan, PR- With the intent of promoting the balance , morale and wellbeing among its workforce, families and the military community across the island, the US Army Reserve-Puerto Rico (1st Mission Support Command) celebrated a Sports Festival and a 5k run, 19 Nov at Fort Buchanan.
The event was funded with the Army Communities of Excellence (ACOE) monetary award that the 1st MSC received last year.
The Sports Festival included many activities for the family, such as an obstacle course, Gotcha paintball, water slide, rock climbing wall and others events.
“We really appreciate not only the participation of the 1st MSC soldiers, but also the participation of the whole military community. I hope you enjoyed this event,” said Brig. Gen. Fernando Fernández, commander of the US Army Reserve-Puerto Rico, 1st Mission Support Command.
Retired Sgt. 1st Class Angel Rios, from Carolina, PR, came with his family to participate in the event.
“This type of activities is very important for the military community. It maintains the family balanced and the good relations among soldiers,” said Rios who was accompanied by his wife and two children.
As part of the benefits of participating in the event, the command distributed promotional items to all registered participants. A gym bag, an aluminum water bottle, a hat and shirts were part of the coveted articles received by the participants.
The main event of the day was the 5k run, which started at 4:30 p.m.
The overall winner of the race, with 18 minutes, 31 seconds, was Dennis Rodriguez, a University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo campus, student, who is the son of Orlando Rodriguez, a federal employee.
“This is the first time I participate in this type of event at Fort Buchanan, but I really enjoyed the race. I tried to run fast from the beginning, until I found my place in the group. Fortunately, I was able to maintain my pace the whole time,” said Rodriguez.
The overall winner for the female category was Sgt. 1st Class Saby Calo, 1st MSC Headquarters, Headquarters Detachment, with 23 minutes and 59 seconds.
“It was challenging because there was another female that I thought was going to pass me. But I liked it very much. I think this race should happen again next year,” said Calo.
Sgt. 1st Class Sammy Santiago, assigned to the 268th Transportation Company, was the first 1st MSC male service member crossing the finish line.
“This was a very good run. I found the last 800 meters to be more challenging because there was a hill. But other than that, I feel happy to be able to make a good representation of the 1st MSC”, said Santiago who has been mobilized twice to Iraq.
“This is a great event because I had the opportunity of bringing my children and creating great family bonding,” said Santiago.
There were many service members, families and members of the military community who participated in the day’s events.
There were over 160 participants registered in the race, with several male and female categories.
The Mt. Carmel Monastery is a historic house located at Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland, United States. It is a two-part frame house, the main block of which was built about 1790 and restored in 1936-37, and consists of a two-story structure with a moderately pitched gable roof. The entire house, devoid of any extraneous ornamentation, reflects the austerity of the life of the Carmelite nuns who are believed to have used this house as their residence. The monastery was founded on October 15, 1790, by four Belgian Carmelite nuns, three of them former natives of Charles County. In 1831 the nuns then in residence were ordered to transfer the convent to Baltimore, Maryland, and this property was abandoned. In 1933 an organization called the Restorers of Mt. Carmel in Maryland, formed to aid in the restoration of the site.
The monastery is still the active home of the discalced (shoeless) Carmelite Nuns of the Carmel of Port Tobacco. The Carmelite life is a call to prayer, tempered with hard work and shared community. As there is a great need in the Church for both Marys and Marthas, the Carmelite is called to be that Mary--serving the Church by prayerfully sitting at the feet of our Lord. She is the intercessor in an age that cries out for intercession.
The public is invited to visit the monastery. The grounds and the church are open to all. Mass is held daily at 7:15 a.m. in the red brick church. There is also a gift shop that is filled with religious and informational items as well as objects that are hand-crafted by several of the nuns. The nuns rely solely on the generosity of the public for their survival. The gift shop is one source of revenue for them. The shop is often not staffed and works on the honor system. So, be sure to bring plenty of small bills or you can also write a personal check.
The nuns spend most of their day sequestered so that they can tend to their primary mission of prayer and intercession. They are happy to receive prayer requests. When visiting the Monastery, you may leave items or communications for the nuns via a turnstile that is located inside the building.
The Mt. Carmel Monastery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

AM I PAYING TO BE PROMOTED?
No. You are paying for the seminars, and while I strongly encourage everyone to be present for the seminars, it is not required. You may show up for the second half only. But, again, I strongly encourage everyone to be present for the seminars. It helps us with organization, expresses to the instructors that you are interested in learning, and fosters a team oriented environment.
WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS FOR BEING PROMOTED?
Under the Capital flag you must demonstrate the 3 Ts: time on the mat, toughness and technique. Visualize a triangle, where technique is on top. On the bottom are time and toughness. Those who are very tough might have the time requirement reduced (but not below the minimum). Those with a great deal of time might have the toughness requirement reduced. Also, other variables may be taken into consideration. For example, one of our newest members is beginning his Jiu-Jitsu journey at 70 years young! Modifications will be made to ensure his journey is both challenge and rewarding!
WHAT ARE THE TIME REQUIREMENTS?
A blue belt takes an average of 1.5 years. A purple belt takes an average of 5 years. A brown belt takes an average of 7 years. A black belt takes an average of 10+ years. Most of the practitioners who tested for black belt had between 12 and 17 years of experience, and the pass rate was about 50%.
WHO MAKES THE DECISION FOR ADVANCEMENT?
Three instructors, including at least one black belt, must approve any promotion.
WHY DOES THE FORMAT KEEP CHANGING?
It’s been consistent for the last two years. However, we do expect that slight changes will be made as time goes on. We always seek feedback from students, peers and our instructors to make things better. The current format is: seminars (optional), sparring, promotions, gauntlet (optional), and group picture.
ETIQUETTE
At promotions events every practitioner should wear a laundered Capital branded white training kimono. This is the equivalent of wearing formal attire for a special occasion, like a wedding. Also, it is extremely impolite to ask an instructor about being promoted.
WHAT DOES THE NAVY BLUE BAR MEAN?
Royce Gracie and the Valente Brothers wanted to honor Helio Gracie’s life and legacy by wearing the navy blue belt that Helio wore. Going forward they are asking representatives to wear the navy bar (excluding white belts and new black belts). For more information about Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s decision to wear the navy belt visit: graciekentucky.blogspot.com/2010/06/why-did-grandmaster-h...
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PUTTING A NAVY BAR ON MY BELT?
The easiest thing to do is purchase athletic tape: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&...
I BELIEVE YOU MADE AN ERROR REGARDING MEMBER X, BY PROMOTING/NOT PROMOTING HIM….
Think about a Jiu-Jitsu competition. Is it possible, from time to time, for the referee to make an error? Of course! It is also possible for the decision makers at our semiannual gatherings to make errors. However, as practitioners progress, more scrutiny is applied to their rank, and ultimately 40 - 60 black belts will test them. At that time practitioners must demonstrate the complete stand-up self-defense curriculum, striking, clinching, grappling and philosophy (the 753 Code).
I caution those who dwell on the rank progress of others, especially as it compares to their own. Instead I encourage you to apply your vigilance to your own journey in the gentile art.
DO I NEED TO BE AT THE PROMOTIONS EVENT?
To be promoted to the next color belt, yes. Technically, to be promoted with stripes on the purple and brown belt, also yes. However, we needed to honor time constraints at Saturday's event, and stripes for deserving practitioners will be awarded this week and in January.
IS THE GAUNTLET HAZING?
What is the difference between a healthy ritual and hazing? What in fact is hazing? According to Wikipedia: "Hazing is the practice of rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group.” Does the gauntlet qualify?
Couldn’t we define the gauntlet as a rite of passage? Google defines a rite of passage as, "a ceremony or event marking an important stage in someone's life, especially birth, puberty, marriage, and death.” While I don’t know of any peer reviewed research articles, the overwhelming consensus is that there are tremendous psychological benefits to being included in a rite of passage.
There’s also acknowledging that our ritual is far less dangerous than the activities which led to it. Whether it’s the rigorous exercise, intense sparring rounds, competitions or the black belt test. In fact, Professor Pedro Valente noted that we are training to be effective in a proven fighting system. To take a hit is not only to be initiated, it's an essential component of our training.
I am not familiar with many of the reasons why people haze, and personally, I have never been involved in a hazing ritual. The gauntlet is our rite of passage; a tradition handed down to us by our elders. I am opposed to taking away or intensifying the gauntlet tradition. Our tradition is about the student, and I don’t believe that practitioners at Capital MMA experience some perverse pleasure in seeing people suffer. Rather, we are celebrating with the newly inducted.
I believe that the gauntlet tradition should only be carried on in the presence of the black belt instructors, exclusively at our semiannual promotions events. Also, it is our charge as black belts to educate junior members of our tradition, and how we conduct ourselves during the rite of passage. Injury, abuse and humiliation are never our objectives.
Finally, this tradition is, and always will be, optional. However, our requirements for being promoted are not. The rigor, intensity, and sacrifice experienced by senior practitioners is significant.
On 6 August, 2015 the LAFD promoted 63 members, celebrating their achievement with their family and friends present. The promotions were as follows:
6 Fire Captain I to Fire Captain II
26 Firefighters/Engineers to Fire Captain I
9 Firefighters to Engineer
8 Firefighters to Fire Inspector
14 Firefighters to Firefighter/Paramedic.
Congratulations to all for your hard work!

Anti-personnel landmines and other explosive remnants of war strike blindly and senselessly, and the victims are usually civilians. Landmine injuries can be particularly devastating for women; given that they are more likely to be valued for their physical appearance and ability to perform domestic tasks, they may be deemed unmarriageable, or their husbands may desert them.

Takeshita Street (竹下通り Takeshita-dōri?) is a pedestrian-only street lined with fashion boutiques, cafes and restaurants in Harajuku in Tokyo, Japan. Stores on Takeshita Street include major chains such as The Body Shop, but most of the businesses are small independent shops that carry an array of styles. The shops on this street are often a bellwether for broader fads, and some are known as "antenna shops," which manufacturers seed with prototypes for test-marketing.
Takeshita Street was a reliable place to go and purchase fake Japanese and American street brand goods from the early 1990s to 2004. Since 2004, a stronger metropolitan government stance on counterfeit merchandise has led to a decrease of such items being available to the public.
Located directly across from the exit of JR Harajuku Station, Takeshita Street is very popular with young teenagers, particularly those visiting Tokyo on school trips, or local young people shopping for small "cute" goods at weekends.
Harajuku is known for the patrons that visit the area every Sunday. Every Sunday, many young people dress in a variety of styles that include gothic lolita, visual kei, and cosplay, among others and spend the day in Harajuku socializing. The fashion styles of these young people frequently vary and are rarely conformist to one particular style and are usually a mesh of many. Most young people gather on Jingu Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to the neighboring Meiji Shrine Area. [1] However, Harajuku is not just known for its Sunday visitors. It is also a well-respected fashion capital of the world renowned for its unique street fashion.[2] Harajuku street style is promoted in Japanese and international publications such as Kera, Tune, Gothic & Lolita Bible and Fruits. Many prominent designers and fashion ideals have sprung from Harajuku and incorporated themselves in to other fashions throughout the world. Harajuku is also a vast shopping district that includes luxury western designers like Louis Vuitton, Harajuku native designers, and affordable shops catered to youths.

Academic staff of three Schools of the University have been working together to assist
a Hunter Valley school in its efforts to establish a 'Health Promoting School'.
The Schools of Health, Medicine and Education have been working co-operatively to help Kurri Kurri Public School develop approaches to creating a greater awareness of health issues, particularly of heart health through an innovative curriculum for Year 6 school students.
The initiative is in response to parent requests for health education programs to be conducted in conjunction with the curriculum and are to be linked with the school canteen in an effort to provide healthier food choices. Local community groups are offering their support of the program. A $500 donation for development has been provided by the Alcan Aluminium Smelter.
The program was launched recently by the Mayor of Cessnock, Alderman Maree Callaghan. Support for the program was provided by the University's Department of Health and Physical Education. Students John Russell, a member of the Newcastle
Breakers Soccer Team; Jane Nixon, under 21 Hockey Representative and Mark Curry, Australian Country Cricket Representative, provided examples of games which are fun to play and which form a basis for a healthy lifestyle.
The program is currently being evaluated, with pre-testing underway at Kurri Kurri public School. A control is being conducted at Telarah Public School. The Department of Health and Physical Education is coordinating the health related fitness testing which is being supervised by lecturer, Dr Ashley Woodcock. Student attitudes to health and their self-reported behaviours are being measured by a questionnaire developed by Dr Ron Plotnikoff from the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the School of Medicine. Gains in knowledge are being monitored by Mr Phil Williams from the Department of Holistic Health. Phil, who is co-ordinating the University involvement, says that community involvement in the program is high. He says that the Coalfields Healthy Heartbeat Project and the Newcastle Branch of the Heart Foundation are working together to provide a range of programs which have been requested by parenrts of Year 6
students.
"These range from courses which provide skills for selecting and preparing low fat foods, exercise and stop smoking programs," Phil says. "I believe the co-operation and participation by Kurri Kurri Public School, the local community and the University Schools of Health, Medicine and Education is unique. Even though the project is still
in its pilot phase, I anticipate that the ideas and principles generated will be disseminated to other schools in the area: he says.
