Autoxylopyrocycloboros is a four-hour-long voyage made in October 2006 on a small wooden steamboat fuelled with wood cut piece by piece from its own hull. It was born out of the particular history of Loch Long, the deepest finger of the Clyde Estuary, the birthplace of the steamship and subsequent home to its distant cousins, the increasingly decrepit, steam-powered Vanguard-class nuclear submarines. One of the most picturesque corners of Scotland, Loch Long's banks are also home to a now-infamous peace camp, a fluctuating community or protesters who have kept the secretive activities of Faslane and Coulport naval bases firmly in the media glare for more than thirty years.
The title Autoxylopyrocycloboros is an extrapolation of the Greek word Ouroboros, the mythical tail-eating serpent of alchemy and a symbol of eternal rejuvenation. Like its title, the project evolved from a number of diverse sources: an interest in the local protest culture; the more violent or self-destructive moments of classic cartoons such as the unending abuses of TOm and Jerry, combined with an ongoing interest in the "endless conflagration" that has marked civilization's development since the first fire was lit in the first cave dwelling; and a love of the tragicomic works of the 1970s conceptual fall guy Bas Jan Ader and the "anarchitecture" of Gordon Matta-CLark. These interests, coupled with the constant use and abuse of defunct technologies, led to the formulation of the self-defeating journey, and its inevitable conclusion in the submarine-infested waters of Loch Long.
The projector kinda struggled against the daylight, but on the other hand how many bright sunny days do you get in London?

From a coworker: "It took two different keys, a screwdriver, a star bit, a security allen wrench, bolt cutters because I couldn't find the second key and an hour for me to change its bulb this morning. Now that is heightened security."

I showed off my drawings in the Plaza in Santa Fe, after dark with the pocket projector. First on the Palace of the Governors (the "oldest continually occupied building in the United States"). However, the building and street lights impoverished the large projections. I then experimented in other locations and on other surfaces. People did pay attention, however they would have been more impressed had I also brought my own screen.
