The drums are seen in flight in the upper right corner of the photo.
Livens projectors were used in batteries of twenty-five and produced a massive flash and clouds of smoke when fired. As the drums were not aerodynamic, they tumbled end over end in the air.
These babies were the real stars of the show. Almost every performance involved an oldschool projector in some way.

Men of the Special Brigade load oil or gas drums into emplaced Livens projectors.
The projectors were developed in the summer of 1916 as a replacement for flamethrowers. Soon they replaced gas cylinders as well.
Livens projectors were first used on a mass scale at Arras on April 4, 1917.

Although the American 30th Engineer Regiment "Gas and Flame" used flamethrowers in combat on an extremely limited basis, most of the unit's fighting was done with Livens projectors and Stokes mortars.
These loaded Livens projectors were photographed at Soissons. Note the wire leads attached to the powder charges beneath the gas or oil drums.
The three tier foyer with a large central well displays the two projectors used for film screenings when the Aurora first opened in 1976. Aurora Opera House. Designed by Louis Naudi, partially incorporating a C19th villa, and opened in October 1976, the theatre seats around 1,600 in stalls and a large range of private boxes. Interior decor was by Maltese artist Chev. Emvin Cremona. Owned and run by the Socjeta Filarmoniker Leone.
