As part of our Wonderbot project, I am building a small puppet theater in my studio, to experiment with poetic robots and interactive storytelling. Before building out a permanent framework, I am testing a few ideas, to best combine physical objects with digital images and sounds. In this test, the projector is pointing down from the ceiling so that characters can stand in front of the projected image without blocking it. With the projector about five feet away from the back wall, it can beam a backdrop that’s about 4 feet wide by 3 feet high.
We are creating a short story around Violet and Indigo, two ‘wonder ducks’ created by Natalina, which we’ve turned into 'poetic robots’. We’re now starting to write a loose script to guide their interactions, with dialog, music, sound effects, props and backdrops. We hope this fairy tale will inspire which features to give these duckbots (e.g.: respond to each other’s calls, approach or avoid one another). Our goal is to capture the best scenes on video and edit it all together into a compelling story at the end of this project. I can’t wait to see how far we can go with this.

Over 100 people filled the Metro Gallery in Old Pasadena on Thursday
October 12 for a special screening of Robert Greenwald's Iraq for
Sale: The War Profiteers. The Brave New Films production was the
October selection of Conscientious Projector, a documentary film
series presented on the second Thursday of each month, sponsored by
Sustainable World (a Peace & Justice ministry of All Saints Church,
Pasadena) and the Center for the Theatre of the Oppressed, in
association with Light Bringer Project. Our group was delighted to
take part in the worldwide launch of this vitally important exposé of
the dangers of war-making for profit.
Iraq for Sale story producer Amanda Spain and line producer Lisa
Remington were on hand to guide a lively community discussion
following the film and make DVDs available to the dozens of eager
moviegoers who flocked to their table. We encourage everyone to buy
this film and show it to as many people as you can.

Control panel of one of the large film projectors left at the abandoned St Ebba's Hospital, Epsom.
St Ebba's Hospital opened in 1899 (formerly the Ewell Epileptic Colony) and was one of the so-called 'Epsom Cluster' hospitals situated on the outskirts London, it closed in 1995.

The experiment here was to see what happened when I used a digital projector to show a DVD on a sheer curtain covering my front deck doors. Obviously, the sheer curtain is too see-through, so I'm going to try some heavier sheets (or else get a public display license).
I'm also thinking about getting a digitial projector instead of a new television, and just plug the digital converter box into it and watch television and movies on the wall/ceiling/curtain. We'll see.
