My friend Matt (http://mcconnellstudios.com/) and I are building our own projectors... here's what was put together after a weekend of talking about the pros and cons to building one of these and what the best approaches would be to making one.
Standard, 15" vertical throw DIY projector, 3/4" cabinet grade plywood, scraps around the house, items from Lumenlab, goldmine-elec.com, allelectronics.com and Home Depot/Lowes.

Took this photo of Trisha playing DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). We were using the projector to display the image on the wall in the Founder's Hall at the church. I placed a small strobe off to her right. I set the aperture on the camera accordingly for the distance from the strobe to her. I then metered for the image on the wall and adjusted the shutter speed to pick up the image, sorta slow. Then set my Canon 430EX to fire a 1/64 burst pointed at the slave and on 2nd Curtain sync to freeze the final image of her. When you have to stay awake all night with the youth, you find that you have plenty of time to goof around and be creative. And the kids didn't care about me popping the flashes at them. This was just after 6am.
