On April 22, 14 girls and two coaches from Brazil who are a part of "Las Estrellas," a sports, leadership and English program, came to Knoxville, TN as part of the U.S. Department of State Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative. After the first day, they had already experienced University culture by participating in Dr. Ashleigh Huffman's Service-Learning class and eating in the cafeteria.

During a Native American history-themed sleepover at the National Archives in Washington, DC, 101 kids and their grown-ups spent the night enjoying history-related activities, learning from special guests actor Martin Sensmeier, Jim Thorpe historians Bob Wheeler and Flo Ridlon, and Native American storyteller Perry Ground. FILE - In this March 3, 2005, file photo President George W. Bush arrives with CIA Director Porter Goss, left, to talk to reporters after he received an intelligence briefing at Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Va., near Washington. In 2004 Goss revived a CIA plan to use the private contractor Blackwater as part of its now-abandoned secret program to kill or capture terrorists in sensitive overseas operations. Blackwater had won the government's confidence by handling security and training operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the decision to use a private contractor yo implement this secret plan struck some former agency officials as highly unusual. I took this picture walking back towards my hotel after a good fish and chips meal. The whole neighborhood of Westminster has stunning architecture and I couldn't resist the snapping the photo. With the Union Jack flying at the front of the building, the five story architecture, and the odd English sky, I think this photo captures a lot of what makes the United Kingdom the United Kingdom.

Last week, I joined the Mill Valley City Council meeting in our MV community center, to ask them to endorse California’s Senate Bill 54, which aims to get state and local law enforcement out of the deportation business.
I came at the invitation of Peter Graumann, the Civil Rights/Immigration Lead for the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), our grassroots political action group. Three of us spoke for a couple minutes each to invite the council to support SB-54 and protect immigrants in our city.
I told them that about 5% of MV residents are undocumented immigrants, who live in fear of being deported and separated from their families. I invited all SB-54 supporters to stand up, and about a dozen rose. I then asked the council: “Can the council do something to address our immigrant population’s fears? How would YOU like to live in fear?”
Mayor Jessica Sloan dodged the question the first time, then asked the police chief to answer the second time. When I asked for a direct response the third time, she said they have a committee looking into intolerance in our city, so my question was no longer timely and they would get back to us.
She said the committee was looking into removing Nazi swastikas from city walls, but she didn’t address our wish to protect immigrants from deportation at all. I found her answer disappointing and “corporate”. They seemed more concerned about fixing potholes and trimming dead trees than taking care of our most vulnerable citizens.
We will keep asking the city of Mill Valley to be more proactive on this issue, and hope that they will join Marin County supervisors and other cities in our county who are looking to take a stand on this issue.
