In 2019, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD-SICA), the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests (AMPB), Re:wild and ministries of environment, joined together to develop the 5 Great Forests of Mesoamerica Alliance.
Since 2021, with funding from the EU's DeSIRA Program, a pilot project "5 Great Forests of Mesoamerica (5GBM)" was launched, which implements a regional approach to integrated conservation of forest territories that seeks to promote the sustainable development of populations that coexist with forests and base their livelihoods on their forest resources.
In 2022, during COP27, the European Union announced funding for the Large Forests of Mesoamerica Program, which is an escalation of the EU-DeSIRA initiative. The Action will provide a coherent framework for the protection of the last remaining large forests through four components that organize the intervention:
A. Data management, transparency and decision making;
B. Forest governance and biodiversity;
C. Support for deforestation-free, low-carbon production and sustainable trade,
D. Protection of environmental rights and defenders.
Therefore, the side event "Great Forests of Mesoamerica Program: #TeamEurope joins the regional conservation effort" seeks to highlight the prospects for biological and ecosystem connectivity across the Mesoamerican region as well as the situation of agrobiodiversity in the face of the challenges of climate change, reporting on the development process of the Great Forests of Mesoamerica Program (GFMP) and the current situation related to its potential and future challenges.
