Over the past four years, Bebnine tented settlement in Akkar North Lebanon, has become home to many Syrian Refugees- many from war-ravaged Syrian districts.
As culturally and ethnically diverse as the community is, there’s one thing that unites all disadvantaged youth from this camp: Soccer. Having a leading program in sports as tool for development, peace building, and conflict resolution, ANERA managed to rehabilitate a playground located two steps away from the camp. ANERA saw an opportunity to offer children a space for recreational activities.
On this Thursday morning, Zainab el Kheshen, came from Cairo, to teach young girls and boys soccer skills and to organize several games. Zainab, aged 31, holder of Bachelor degrees in Law, management and early childhood education, is a football trainer, who roamed around the Arab world to unite youth around her love for soccer, “I believe that soccer is a great tool for development, especially for young girls in conservative communities, who don’t even get the chance to go play outside, soccer offer them the opportunity to meet, to work out and to break gender boundaries.” Zainab Says.
39 girls and 11 boys were waiting for Zainab to arrive; they were already divided into teams, chose their team names carefully and started chanting cheerful songs.
Lina Amer, aged 12, heard the news about a volunteer coming from Egypt, and she didn’t hesitate joining the girl’s team. Lina who fled Kousseir area in Syria two years ago, has been sharing a tent in Akkar Lebanon with her family of 6 members, “we used to see the boys playing here and wishing we had a chance to play, we came every morning, stayed at the fence and watched them play,” Said Lina, adding “our parents don’t let us play soccer, they say it is a manly game, and girls should not play sports, but when they knew that a woman is going to train us, they agreed on letting us join the event.”

SAN PEDRO - With the legendary battleship USS Iowa and renowned LAFD Fireboat 2 as a backdrop, the first ever graduates of the Firefighter/EMS Magnet (FEMS) program at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, California were honored by civic leaders, including City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and Assistant Chief Steven Gutierrez, both alumni of the school, at a waterfront ceremony on May 24, 2019. Chief Terrazas warmly congratulated each FEMS graduate with a hearty handshake and words of encouragement as their families cheered their unique accomplishment. One of four youth programs supported by the LAFD, FEMS provides a highly structured and progressive pathway for achieving academic, physical and life skills beneficial to a fire service career, including teamwork, leadership, courage and commitment.

During a Native American history-themed sleepover at the National Archives in Washington, DC, 101 kids and their grown-ups spent the night enjoying history-related activities, learning from special guests actor Martin Sensmeier, Jim Thorpe historians Bob Wheeler and Flo Ridlon, and Native American storyteller Perry Ground. After sleeping over night in the Rotunda, participants enjoyed a pancake breakfast made by the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero, on October 14, 2018.

Visitors attended a day-long studio workshop by independent instructor, artist, and conservator Corey D’Augustine in March and April. Participants were introduced to working in abstraction and expressionism through employing the painting techniques of the period, drawing inspiration from artists such as Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Kazimir Malevich, Vasily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig and Franz Marc. As part of the workshop, participants visited The Great Upheaval: Modern Art From the Guggenheim Collection, 1910–1918 to view works of art in person, then moved to the studio to paint a small canvas based on these works. The purpose of this program is to teach gymnastics skills to children and youth with autism in a safe and supportive environment. This program will focus on basic gymnastics skills, including a variety of activities and general gym safety. Participants will be able to gain exposure to all of the typical equipment found in a gymnastics facility, such as floor, beam, bars, rings and trampoline.
