SAN PEDRO - With the legendary battleship USS Iowa and renowned LAFD Fireboat 2 as a backdrop, the first ever graduates of the Firefighter/EMS Magnet (FEMS) program at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, California were honored by civic leaders, including City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and Assistant Chief Steven Gutierrez, both alumni of the school, at a waterfront ceremony on May 24, 2019. Chief Terrazas warmly congratulated each FEMS graduate with a hearty handshake and words of encouragement as their families cheered their unique accomplishment. One of four youth programs supported by the LAFD, FEMS provides a highly structured and progressive pathway for achieving academic, physical and life skills beneficial to a fire service career, including teamwork, leadership, courage and commitment.

On April 22, 14 girls and two coaches from Brazil who are a part of "Las Estrellas," a sports, leadership and English program, came to Knoxville, TN as part of the U.S. Department of State Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative. After the first day, they had already experienced University culture by participating in Dr. Ashleigh Huffman's Service-Learning class and eating in the cafeteria.
After two years away, the Red Cross Gala returned for its 27th year for a welcome in-person event at City Hall on Saturday, March 19. A cocktail reception in the Mayor's Balcony overlooked the Rotunda and Grand staircase below where dinner tables awaited everyone. The dinner program featured a 3-course meal and was emceed by KTVU-2's Dave Clark. Honorees included Ewing's Sarcoma survivor and blood donor champion Brandi Pico and her family, and corporate partner and disaster responder Rodan + Fields. It was a memorable evening spent celebrating and supporting the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross!

Ferris, Virginia National Guard Senior Enlisted Advisor, and tour the Virginia Army National Guard’s Recruit Sustainment Program Site #9 Oct. 17, 2015, at Camp Pendleton in Virginia Beach, Va. Lt. Col. Everton E. Nevers, commander of the Virginia Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion, led the briefing and tour, where they saw 54 recent Virginia Army National Guard recruits conducting various forms of training. The goal of the Recruit Sustainment Program is to introduce new National Guard recruits to the basics of the U.S. Army before they attend Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. Training includes physical training, road marches and classes that familiarize the recruits with the U.S. Army’s military rank structure, proper wear of military uniforms and military customs. An early programmable thermostat made by the Minneapolis co. The clock and the thermostat must both be separately wound with an included key. Teeth on the back of the clock can be set for different times to trigger the thermostat to turn up or down. I have been told that this thermostat was originally located in the Selden, Kansas high school.

As I was switching channels a little while ago I I landed on the Travel Channel where they were hunting snapping turtles for food and next the History Channel where folks in Louisiana were filling their quotas for "harvesting" alligators. While I understand the necessity for wildlife management once humans are involved in ecosystems, I think its so sad that we through the media sensationalize the killing of creatures so humans can have soup and leather. Alll of these creatures have been on the earth between 100 and 200+ million years. The only thing they have done all those millions of years was to live their own lives...Makes me sad.The picture here is of a Green iguana. Green iguana (Iguana iguana). Iguanas are native to Mexico and Central and South America. They are prevelant in the pet trade but they should not be kept as "pets." Lizards have been on the earth for 250 million years.
