4 March 2014. Tawilla: Women use fuel-efficient stoves to cook their meals in the Rwanda camp for internally displaced people (IDP) in Tawila, North Darfur.
More than 8,000 women from the camp are the beneficiaries of the Safe Access to Firewood and Alternative Energy (SAFE) project, run by the World Food Programme (WFP). Since 2011, displaced women receive training on how to make fuel-efficient stoves and fire briquettes from saw dust and dried leaves and household waste. WFP's SAFE project offers a safer, cheaper and greener way to cook food and also helps women to generate income through selling the stoves in the market.

The North Charleston Police Department implemented Project S.T.A.N.D (Stop and Take A New Direction) aimed at not just arresting low level narcotics dealers with little or no prior criminal history but to go a step further and help those involved in the activity change their lives for the better. This is program aimed at reducing recidivism through working on all aspects of the criminals’ lives.
This project was the focus of a Dateline NBC special entitled “Intersection” which aired on March 14, 2013.

PEPP = Planetary Entry Parachute Program
"Construction of flight test unit from which parachutes will be deployed in a series of experiments to check out new techniques for landing unmanned capsules on Mars. A metal skin is being placed over the disc-shaped frame with a central tube which will house the packaged parachute. The unit will be carried to an altitude of about 140,000 miles by a huge balloon. It will then be released and when free from the balloon the unit will be propelled to a downward velocity of about 10,000 miles per hour by eight small rocket engines. This velocity will closely simulate the speed of a capsule entering the Martian atmosphere. When the unit has been propelled downward to 130,000 feet the parachute carrying a small instrument package will be deployed. The disc-shaped carrier will fall freely to the ground, and the parachute and laboratory instrument package will be recovered for inspection and laboratory analysis. The tests are scheduled to begin mid-1966 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. In some tests Nike sounding rockets will be used to launch the smaller flight units."

One more from our friends Posokhin, Mndoyants, and company: New Arbat Street, a new mega-boulevard first conceived in the Thirties, resurrected in the Fifties and executed in the Sixties. Housing slabs on one side, office slabs (with wimpy connecting band of retail) on the other. I believe there is also a theater and maybe some other public program. This clarifies the degree to which the plans to reshape the world from the avant-garde days survived, alongside the monumental drive of the Stalinist period. We find similar schemes in other places, of course. In Stockholm, for example, Sven Markelius used a similar "bar with slabs above" scheme in the Sergelgatan development - but that was conceived as a fundamentally pedestrian place, in the center of the old city and well-integrated with surrounding infrastructure. Novy Arbat, on the other hand, just completely blows out the scale of everything around it: the buildings are huge and spaced very far apart, even without considering the overscaled width of the street. Not my favorite thing in Moscow.
