Rally outside the Capitol while Mark Zuckerberg testifies inside

Unedited shot of people reflected in a puddle in Amsterdam. Taken with my Sony HX1. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

Privacy is a valuable commodity these days, even though most of us don't seem to pay much attention or thought to the information we share about ourselves online (Facebook!!!), but I personally am very aware of the issues associated with this topic, so I have started a 'Puddle People Privacy Protection Program', it's called 'P5' and it allows people who were unfortunate enough to walk into my wicked puddle shots without knowing and wanting to do so, to submit an online form requesting their faces to be made unrecognizable, not unlike the similar service for Google Streetview. My team of highly skilled Helper-Monkeys then throws a digital blanket over the images before publishing them on the Interwebs, resulting in images like those I've posted today, clearly a win-win situation, art for the masses, privacy for the poor puddle people :D

I've made a movie of the people in this puddle too, check it out on my YouTube channel, thank you :)

The debate of Facebook privacy can go on and on. Facebook has made strides in the privacy policy, however, our information is still being sold to third parties.

Are we compromising our privacy as we try to make ourselves more visible online?

On July 19, as part of a continuing series of discussions with EU parliamentary leaders on digital economy issues, Governance Studies at Brookings hosted EU Member of Parliament Sophie in ’t Veld to discuss data privacy and civil liberties. As a longtime member of the Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) and a member of the Parliament’s Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE), in ’t Veld has been at the forefront of debates about data protection as well as government access to data and sharing of data among governments. How will the EU enter into a CLOUD Act agreement with the U.S.? How will the EU’s proposed e-Evidence Regulation affect the level of protection in the EU? How might other events affect the future of transatlantic data transfers? And what emerging threats pose the greatest risk to data protection in the EU and U.S.?

A fish that has been identified and bar coded to allow FDA to fight fraud is examined by Jonathan Deeds, Ph.D., an FDA fish toxicologist, (left), and Jeffrey Williams, Ph.D., who is in charge of the Smithsonian division where fish that are bar coded by FDA scientists are stored. After FDA scientists take samples of fish, identify their species through DNA tests and assign a bar code, the fish are stored long term in tanks of ethanol at the Smithsonian Division of Fisheries. FDA is in the midst of a massive project aimed at thwarting species substitution, in which consumers pay for one kind of fish but are sold another kind. FDA scientists store fish samples in the Smithsonian facility after taking DNA samples that allow them to create bar codes identifying individual fish species.

Nowadays, we continually share data: a message via WhatsApp, a picture on Instagram, an update on Facebook or an e-mail through Gmail. With whom do we really share this data? And how can we make sure that our personal data stay strictly personal?

This exhibition addresses issues of online privacy and digital surveillance. Next to several historical examples of encrypting, ‘Design my Privacy’ also shows some surprising contemporary strategies by more than 35 young designers and artists to maintain control over our data.

Thursday 7th July, 2011 : installing PRIVACY for Mini Graff

There is no need for the Strava hidden area to be a bullseye indicating ones home, since one can set it off centre and one can set more than one of them. E.g. if ones home were at the position of the red star, then one might set hidden areas like the circles in black.

Maybe it is an old saying in the era of information. The idea of absolutely privacy is challenged by the developments in media technologies.
