Here's a Christmas 'Steam Sunday' bonus following up on the prior post showing Old 557 on her first day back moving on her old home rails, albeit atop a flat car. In this photo she can be seen enroute from Whittier to Anchorage behind twin GP40-2s crossing the Placer River and about to duck into the mile long Portage Tunnel at Bear Valley at about MP 5.7 on the Alaska Railroad’s Whittier Division mainline.
The Alaska Railroad's last active steam locomotive, #557, returned after a 46 1/2 year hiatus in the lower 48. #557 is a Baldwin Locomotive Works class S-160 2-8-0 Consolidation built for the US Army Transportation Corps. and diverted to Alaska in December 1944. Retired and shipped out of state in 1965, she was purchased by a wealthy Alaskan philanthropic family, repatriated to the Last Frontier, and donated back to the ARR with the provision she must be returned to active service within 8 years. To learn more about her and see many historic photos click here: www.alaskarails.org/pix/former-loco/557/index.html to check out John Comb's excellent site on all things ARR. This particular link will take you specifically to the section on #557 to learn her history and see status and progress reports. While the 8 year timeline obviously hasn't been met, progress has been remarkable and is ongoing so please check if out.

Prior to the Vivid lights coming at 6pm, I walked up the hill from my work to this walkway over the Warringah Freeway. Used my zoom fish eye @ 15mm to fill in the foreground as much as possible.

Di sicuro, questo viaggio a Cuba,
dette motivazioni importanti a mia moglie.

Prior to our departure from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL), we were treated to an amazing sunset outside our port side window. So glad I thought to bring my silicone anti-reflective lens shade. They are well worth the $8 purchase price.

The National Trust's Goodameavy Estate on the south-west side of the Dartmoor National Park is where the River Plym tumbles off Dartmoor and joins up with the River Meavy. It then makes its way to the sea at Plymouth. The footbridge provides access to the Goodameavy Estate from the car park at Shaugh Bridge.
This south-west corner of Dartmoor near the village of Shaugh Prior has a rich industrial history with numerous remains of buildings associated with old tin mines, quarries and china clay workings.
After 60085 had left Skipton bound for Leeds there was about four hours to kill before the next action I had spotted in the area. I missed the New Biggin in the timetable. Anyway I thought it would be a good time to explore the Embsay and Bolton Railway railway where No 7 and 37294 were found to be working services.
37294 seen approaching Prior Lane from Bolton Abbey. The siding to the left presumably serving a local quarry. Any clues would be welcomed.
Bixby Creek Bridge, also known as Bixby Bridge, is a reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge in Big Sur, California. The bridge is located 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco and 13 miles (21 km) south of Carmel in Monterey County along California Highway One. Prior to the opening of the bridge in 1932, residents of the Big Sur area were virtually cut off during winter due to the often impassable Old Coast Road that led 11 miles (18 km) inland. At its completion, the bridge was built under budget for $199,861 and was the longest concrete arch span at 320 feet (98 m) on the California State Highway System. It is one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world and one of the most photographed bridges along the Pacific Coast due to its aesthetic design and location.

Prior to heading over to the digging area, we all have to find our tools and bags or backpacks to use for getting out finds back to the vehicles, parked about 70 yards from the mine on the Baker Ranch, located near Hermanas, New Mexico.
Prior to departing for Canada, David had warned me about the difficulties in getting light up in the mountains. Heeding his warning Aaron and I decided to get up for sunrise well over an hour early to wait for the light show, or lack thereof. Partly cloudy skies greeted us at Vermilion Lakes as we patiently waited for blue hour to turn into burning sunrise colors. However, those reds and pinks we had hoped for never came as the southeastern horizon was blocked by excessive cloud cover.
After coming up fruitless past sunrise at Second Vermilion Lake I had Aaron drive us over to the Third Lake for a quick look and scouting trip before we headed back for breakfast. Just as we arrived at Third Vermilion Lake the sun began creeping above the horizon clouds and burst light beams into the sky. Both of us instantly grabbed our gear and raced out to the shore looking for compositions.
At first I was almost shooting aimlessly wanting to capture the fleeting light until I noticed something along part of the shoreline: frozen bubbles. The overnight temperature was cold enough to form a thin layer of ice along parts of the lake. Vermilion Lakes is also known for its lake vegetation that release gases that in turn get trapped under forming ice. I spotted this large bubble patch unlike any other I have seen before and made it the focal point of my image. Coupled with light beams galore, it was the perfect morning to start our day.

The elegant Loggia dei Priori or della Signoria, which closes the southern side of the homonymous square and stands a few steps from Palazzo Vecchio, is also known by other names.
It was in November 1356 that the Major Council of the Signoria approved its construction, as part of a project for the expansion and redevelopment of the square.
The name "dei Lanzi" instead spread only two centuries later, when Cosimo I de 'Medici decided to use the medieval loggia as the facade of the headquarters of his personal guardhouse. The German Guard, which Cosimo had been able to observe in action following Charles V, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and his ally, was made up of lansquenets

West Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.
Panorama:
Late this afternoon we had a very large Male Eagle fly in and perch on a limb in an oak tree just across the road from our house.
I took a few photos but they are not that good, I'm just not equipped to take photos of animals but you can make out that it's an Eagle.
We have a nesting pair that reside on the other side of the pond every year and I'm not sure if this is one of them or just an Eagle passing through on it's way north.
Prior to posting these photos I checked to see if the Eagle was gone but was surprised to see it still perched in the tree, it's probably going to roost there for the night.
Prior to the delivery of the carrier's A321neos, Air Transat's A330s were a common sight in Gatwick. Since this photo was taken, C-GUFR has been leased to Condor and subsequently returned and repainted into TS' new colours.

James Prior was a regular sight on the River Thames, sailing up as far as Deptford and beyond, and based in Colchester, Essex. It was one of a fleet of similar vessels, including Bert Prior and Mark Prior. James Prior was built in 1963 at Faversham.
There's no record of activity after 2019 on either Marine Traffic or Vessel Finder, the latter showing it at Wivenhoe, Essex, on the River Colne.
Described as motor barges, they had distinctive engine notes (a reassuring, to me, chug chug chug) and always looked good, whether in need of a paint job or having had one; also a more human size...

Swaffham Prior is unique in the UK – it has two windmills in close proximity both with their sails!
The mills worked together from 1896 until 1927, with Fosters Mill gristing animal feed and the Smock Tower mill (built around 1820) providing flour for human consumption. Then, on an horrendous autumn night, during an almighty storm, the Smock Tower Mill was struck by lightening and the sails and going gears badly damaged.
