This Rouse Job Stick is placed on a 1901 print ad of H. B. Rouse.
The mark of the company differs, and the width of the well-known Rouse Job Stick is 2″ or 1 1/8″, but this is 2 1/4″.

On April 10, 1865 Generals Lee and Grant met a second time at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. At that second meeting General Lee requested that his men be given evidence that they were paroled prisoners - to protect them from arrest or harassment. A prinintg press was set up in the Olive Grove Tavern and over the next several days cranked out an enormous number of printed slips. The Park Service calims that 28,231 parole passes were issued to Confederates. At first the paper paroles were looked upon as a humiliating reminded of defeat. But later the attitude of confederate veterns changed and they considered the possesion of one as a matter of pride in that it was proof that they had lasted until the very end.
OK. So Tim’s happy and we’re getting on a roll – quite literally! The file’s sent to a hotfolder for the right printer (we have lots of printers of all shapes and sizes, each with it’s own unique capability). If it’s a small print, it will come out of the Polli Electronica – a laser printer with the same colour and capability as the Lambda. If it’s a colour or black and white biggie it will go on the Lambda and the colour superbiggies go on the Lightjet. And of course the inkjet prints come out of the Epson. Tim’s keeping fit running all over the place for this part!
The Monotype Composition Caster machine automatically casts individual printing types from molten metal and sets this type into justified lines, ready for printing. The machine is controlled by a punched paper tape whose perforations are created by a keyboard.
