Book by Vincent Steer, published in London in the 1930s.

These are progressive color proofs of the National Tuberculosis Association 1960 Christmas seals (= Scott Catalogue # WX204). They show the sequence of color printing - in this case, four stages: brown, black, green, and red.

The backside of several flongs. I did this scan to show the kinds of marks that would be made in typical handling.

These paper molds are called flongs, which were made for casting metal plates for printing, typically to build up a page for a newspaper. Flongs were made by taking an original and under high pressure, creating a molded inverse, which was then in turn cast in type metal. These all look to be from the early 1970s, just before letterpress/relief printing was in its dying days, used increasingly only by newspapers before they switched to modern offset, a massive expense.

This is one of the printing presses at my Sunday workplace.

Pattern Plates for the Mineral Conchology of Great Britain, Between 1810-1845

Location: The John Work Garrett Library

Call No.: QL 425.G7 S69 1812 FOLIO

Original archival hand colored pattern plates for James Sowerby's "Mineral conchology of Great Britain, or, Coloured figures and descriptions of those remains of testaceous animals, or shells which have been preserved at various times, and depths in the earth." This work was published over a 34 year period (1812-1846). The final parts were produced by his son James De Carle, with the help of George Brettingham. When complete, the published work contained 650 colored plates, each with a letter-press description, in seven volumes

Copper plate engravings in black printing ink, hand colored with watercolor, with iron gall ink and graphite inscriptions.

These are images for screen printing (a Thermofax screen) that I have drawn. Great for adding color or embellishment to art journals, background paintings, wearables and any number of things. Suitable for framing also. Email me for more info or visit my Etsy shop to look at all of them.

Outside India Mill in Darwen, there is an old printing machine originally used in the mill. (I know - I visited there in the early 70s!) This is part of the foam on one of the rollers which has been affected by the elements and time.

The first step in the process is selecting the transfer you want to put onto your board. In this case I was working from a PDF of the board layout provided by tonepad.com. Since this was a PDF I was worried that there might be some scaling issues when we printed it. So we did some test copies. Sure enough the rulers that were provided next to the transfer were about 1/6" smaller than what they should be. So we ended up screen capping them, copying the screen cap to paint, cropping and then copy / pasting the cropped image to wordpad for printing. the final result was a little blown out but was exactly 2" x 1.5"

WORKSHOP of Cyanotype process printing

Jot or Tittle, a little typographic etymology for our first broadside.

This is the printing block that the previous halftones were printed from (see accompanying photos). The plate is attached to a wood block to make it type high. It's difficult to see the positive image when looking at this reverse one but I am pleased with the results. Oh, the highlight on the cross is the above light fixture, not miraculous!

A last shot as we head for the Seoul Airport to fly back to Beijing. We stayed at a small hotel catering to low budget business travellers in a district of Seoul whose narrow winding lanes are dominated by print shops. Most are small and medium shops and they run all hours of the day and night. We really liked staying in that hotel and neighborhood and would do it again. Here a large stack of paper can be seen on the back of a scooter driving away.
