Six Centuries of Type & Printing is a book by yours truly about the history of printing from Gutenberg’s development of mass-production of consistently cast metal printing types. (I dive briefly into the history owed to mostly anonymous printers before him, some centuries before.)
The book walks through all the varied technological developments that took us from c. 1450 to the present, including many elements often forgotten in modern times, like “flong” (paper page molds that made rotary presses possible), electrotyping (for reproducing printing types—and pirating them), and the pantograph.
Illustrated with a combination of historic line art and adaptations of modern photographs, and with jaunty endpapers designed by me featuring elements of printing production from hand molds to floppy disks, the book is designed to last the ages. Sweet Call and Response was developed with an emphasis on experimentation with the materials - digital printing on canvas, photo collage, machine sewn thread, and sewn collage.
Instinctively, messages are sent to attract a response. This book is a visual poem about communication through the interplay of universal symbols and photographic images.
The book is printed entirely on canvas specially coated for digital printing with pigmented inks. A variety of sewing techniques, such as patchwork and embroidery, are applied to the pages over the ink. Each page of the book is treated with meticulous stitching executed by hand using a home sewing machine. Pages are affected on both sides by the stitching. Inverse images create a visual echo woven into the design of the book, which propels the narrative ever forward.

These printing plates were made by the stereotype process from paper molds, called flongs, in which the flong was placed into a casting form and filled with liquid type metal. They appear to have been created for stamps and coin advertisements. (The blue-outlined item at lower-right appears to be created from aluminum in a different process.) These flat stereotypes would not have gone on a newspaper press. Instead, they would be mounted to the right height and locked down with a full page of a newspaper in flat form, from which yet another flong was made, and that flong was then cast as a curved stereotyped for the high-speed rotary presses used in newspaper printing. These all look to be from the early 1970s, just before letterpress/relief printing was in its dying days, used increasingly only by newspapers before they switched to modern offset, a massive expense.
