Even client service studios need to walk around in their creative underwear from time to time, and Left Turn Only has never been afraid of our pale flabby inspirational nudity. “Angrybot at the Moment of Ascension to an Electric Dawn” is such a work. I made a Valentine's Day thingy for my latest process piece for Design Cuts!
This one was quite a lot of fun to put together. Roverd is a great script typeface, with plenty of luscious swashes to play with. Add a few ornaments around it, sprinkle with a texture or two, and you'll get a neat card/poster to share with your loved one.
The bundle features some interesting resources for your print projects. You should check it out, and grab it before it's gone forever.

Our lovely intern, Lisa Finch, has designed something special for our next author. And here’s what she’s done: hand-sewn, hand-made crafted contracts complete with their own little orange slip-cases. Read about the contract design here.

Hello all! I’m excited to share with you my first tutorial on the new version of the Design Cuts site.
It looks like a main theme within the modern creative design bundle is space. After Pam’s great ’80s, candy-flavored version, we will focus on a more contemporary and Sci-Fi vibe for our piece.
We will use the bundle’s content to create a poster with a slightly mysterious vibe for Galaxy Machine, a fictional up-coming movie directed by Duncan Jones, and starring Sam Rockwell, Sigourney Weaver, Bruce Willis, Sandra Bullock, Ethan Hawke, and Natalie Portman.

"Guys that talk about the ideal woman just don't like women. I don't want an ideal woman, I just like dames."
-- Novelist John Steinbeck in the July 1950 "All Male Issue" of Flair Magazine, when "handed a sketch pad and a snapshot of [a] plastic manikin" and asked by the editor "to draw his Ideal Woman in the same pose and give us his whys and wherefores."
Flair asked columnist Earl Wilson, couturier Jacques Fath and child actor Brandon de Wilde (Shane! Come back Shane!) to do the same.
I got my hands on this particular copy of Flair through eBay when I read that its editor, Fleur Cowles, passed away a couple of weeks ago. Flair counted W. H. Auden, Jean Cocteau, Simone de Beauvoir, Angus Wilson, Tennessee Williams, Ogden Nash and Clare Boothe Luce, Salvador Dalí, Saul Steinberg, Lucian Freud, Rufino Tamayo and Winston Churchill among its contributors.
At 50 cents a copy, Flair's standards and elaborate art direction managed to lose the publication money at a time when print was still going strong and most magazines sold for 20 cents. According to the New York Times:
"Although there were just 12 issues of Flair, published from February 1950 to January 1951, the magazine caused a sensation and is still admired for its coverage of fashion, décor, travel, art, literature and other enthusiasms of Ms. Cowles’s. It was part of the Cowles publishing empire, which included newspapers in the Midwest and, most notably, Look magazine, of which Ms. Cowles had been an influential editor."
But Flair, incorporating cutouts, fold-outs, pop-ups, removable reproductions of artworks and a variety of paper stocks of different sizes and textures, was simply too expensive to produce, even though it sold for 50 cents a copy when Time and Life were selling for 20 cents."
When Flair ceased publication, Mr. Cowles, who had financed it, estimated that it had lost $2.5 million. Circulation, less than 100,000 for the first issue, eventually doubled, but advertising did not follow, and losses were running about 75 cents a copy."
Ms. Cowles would be pleased to learn that issues are currently trending considerably higher than that, and have exploded even in the few short days since her death.
(Which is why I'm no longer buying.)
This is a great photo of our setup from Chris and my senior capstone show. The table to the right features a carousel of images of our app and website. The box is a takeaway for travelers on the train, and the stand holds the brochures explaining our design process.
Thanks to my classmate and excellent photographer, Ren for the photos! If you need any photography for events or fun around the Milwaukee area, check her out. She does amazing work.
I'm on the internets:
I designed this bustle dress based on references from 1879. The print is inspired by japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. I drew the spot pattern by hand and then screenprinted fabric panels that were handsewn on to the bodice and skirt.

Available at HypeForType: Download Calgary Script
Calgary Script was mostly inspired by a brush script on a Welcome To Calgary sign in, you guessed it, Calgary. Though now, after it’s finished, I can easily tell the influence is evident of all the books
on American sign painting I have absorbed over the years.
The overall effect of the font is similar to something that Fonzied itself, big hair and leather jackets and all, out of the early 1980s, but the feeling really dates back to a few decades earlier. Heady caps and free-flowing lowercase make for a speedy, determined, and instinctively organized buffalo herd of a typeface. This is a packaging font with a true supermarket sign spin, with OpenType features including ligatures, alternates, and ordinals specifically made to follow numbers.

Ladies and gentlemen, my latest process post for Design Cuts is live!
In these two mini-tutorials, I'll walk through my process to create two type-driven pieces.
One focuses on the idea of wanderlust, and leverages some delicate script type from their current bundle.
The second poster is a mock horror B-movie poster. It features all the grunge, grime, blood splatters, and fake folds you could ever want.
I hope you'll enjoy following along as much as I enjoyed writing the post! I believe these pieces will help you to get a sense of how much is possible with the 30 different type families present in the bundle. Don't miss out on it.
