The 12 Principles of Animation
Here I am going to note down and briefly reflect on the 12 principles of animation
1 – Squash and Stretch
This is the most important principle as it gives the animated object a feeling of weight, density and flexibility. It is used in virtually all animations, be it for comical effect or in more realistic animations where it is important to show an objects volume does not change when squashed or stretched.
2 – Anticipation
This is used to prepare the audience for movement, action or some other form of movement. It is important as it helps make objects and characters more realistic in their movements. i.e. a character jumping would have to bend their knees first or the movement would not look convincing.
3 – Staging
This is what directs the audience’s attention to the most important scene or objects and makes it clear which is which, without this principle animations would be mist matched and unclear as to what is the primary interest to pay attention to.
4 – Pose to Pose
This is a more modern technique that replaces the ‘Straight ahead action’. In pose to pose the object is animated through several key frames where movements start, stop or change, This makes for a smoother and quicker animation process.
5 - Follow Through
A simple way of showing that objects and characters obey the laws of physics within the animation and that movements look more fluid and real as opposed to just stopping dead.
6 – Slow in and Out
any character and most objects require time to move and that movement has acceleration and deceleration which has to be shown, even in small movements, this helps with realisim
7 – Arcs
There are very few straight lines in the trajectory of objects, gravity pulls them down creating a curve, having this in animation gives a more realistic sense of physics and power
8 – Secondary Action
this allows for more realistic animation, think of it as multi-tasking. A character can walk and swing their arms at the same time or move their head.
9 – Timing
This is very important it is another principle that affects how an animation obeys the laws of physics and the objects moves and appear at the right time
10 – Exaggeration
Mainly used to affect character design, setting and themes as reality can be rather boring when it comes to animations.
11 – Solid Drawing
This is how an animation takes into account 3d space, volume and depth and is often based on a drawing
12 – Appeal
a very important principle as it defines how a character looks and the audiences reaction to it, is it a hero or villain? This can often be defined by their appurtenance, based on Appeal
So these are the 12 principles of animation, without which all animations would be unrealistic, clunky physically inaccurate and boring

Stockholm grew rapidly after the second world war. The city expanded to the south and west as the subway line stretched further and further outwards. Each subway stop becoming a new community centre neighborhood following the modernist city planning principles of the times. The spaces between the more densely built centers was used for infrastructure, motorways and recreational purposes. In many current discussions on the properties of the modernist city these spaces are typically described as non-places, empty, leftover, wasteland. (bit.ly/2kA0wYh, Cecilia von Schéele, The void : Urban wasteland as political space, 2016) Spaces defined as a negative, as an absence or as without use or program. Today these descriptions are often used as arguments for densification or to defend a new paradigm in city planning. This workshop is about engaging with these kind of spaces using the Örbyleden site as an example. Are they empty, useless and un-programmed? If any, what kind of activities do take place, what uses are already there?
In 1995 the Spanish architect and philosopher Ignasi de Solà-Morales calls these spaces a terrain vague (bit.ly/2jYIRX4, Ignasi de Sola-Morales, Terrain Vague, 1995). The vague terrain belong spaces seemingly designed without any purpose at all, can be seen as a product of the modernist city. They create an uncertainty in respect of what is allowed, grey zones of insecurities. The vague terrain questions our role as participants in the city, it puts into question under what authority, along what protocols we are supposed to act. As such the terrain vague can be seen to take on virtual properties, spaces where potentially another city is already there, spaces waiting to be actualized.

The four cabalistic principles in the Book 'Zohar'. This book, written in Spain at the time of Raymond Lull, around 1280/90, is the main text of the Cabala.
•What are the elements and principles used?
The elements used in this photograph are colour, form, and shape. Colour is evident as shown through the various colours the paper stars are, from pink, blue, yellow, orange, green, and red, this image displays multiple colours. Form and shape is found in the shape and “structure” of the stars. As the stars were falling at different angles, different perspectives of the star were captured. Therefore, this accentuated the form and shape of the stars. The principles used are movement, harmony and unity, proportion, and repetition. Movement is found in the direction from which the stars were falling. Although they were falling out of the hand, the stars in this photograph make it appear to be gravitating towards the hand, therefore showing movement. Harmony and unity is shown through the number of stars. All the various stars in this picture work together to accentuate other elements and principles of design, such as movement and repetition. Each star in this picture affects the picture in some way or another through how they contribute to movement or to give colour to the image. Proportion is shown through the contrast of the hand compared to the size of the stars, and finally repetition is most prominently displayed through the abundant amount of stars.
•How did you take the photograph?
I took this photograph by setting it on a table and not a tripod. I then set it on a high shutter speed of 1/1000. This was so to correspond with the requirement of a high shutter speed in order to capture a frozen motion. I then focused my hand, a distance from the camera from where I was going to drop the stars, then I released the stars.
•What difficulties did you encounter?
Some difficulties that I had encountered while taking this photograph, was getting the photograph to be in focus, and getting the stars to fall in a way that would capture the example of freeze motion. At first, the photographs wouldn’t come out in focus and were often blurry. However I learnt that I should focus the object (in this case, my hand) in a distance from the camera where I would drop them. This made my pictures become more in focus. Secondly, there was difficulty in getting the stars to fall in a way that would be appealing. Eventually, I realized I had to release the stars more slowly in order to obtain the stars suspended in different heights.
•Why is this best example?
I feel that this is the best example as it shows different heights of the falling stars, emphasizing further the fact that this photo was taken for the purposes of showing a moment in time. Additionally, this photo demonstrates several elements and principles such as colour, movement, repetition, and harmony.
•Why is this your best example of motion?
I feel that this is my best example of motion as it shows the type of motion photography I was trying to achieve the best. The picture has a definite focal point (the hand) and also has many different elements and principles used, far more than the other images. Also, I feel that this picture is more visually appealing and interesting to a viewer due to the abundance of stars that make the viewer look at all the different angles. This also adds to the complexity of the image making it more captivating and overall more attractive.
•How did your editing enhance the image?
The editing that was done enhances the image by making it brighter. This was done as so to make the image look less dull, compared to how it appeared before. This therefore changed the mood, and atmosphere of the picture by making it seem much lighter and more cheerful. Making this image brighter also helped bring out the vibrant colours of the stars even further adding to the general effect of the photograph. Also, my editing also helped removed an amputation in the corner of the photo, making it appear less distracting to the viewer.
