The original owners of Italianate homes would often have been third or fourth generation Canadians, probably descended from United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were refugees. They left the newly formed United States because they disagreed with fundamental policies of the new republic, one of them being slavery. Many of the Loyalists left beautiful properties, large homes and good lives with only the belongings they could fit on their backs or in a wagon. They would have been pleased to see their descendants living in comfort. In addition, they would have been happy to see that their descendants had maintained the same moral principles that forced their own migration.70

The Beemster is the first so-called polder in the Netherlands that was reclaimed from a lake, the water being extracted out of the lake by windmills. The Beemster Polder was dried during the period 1609 through 1612. It has preserved intact its well-ordered landscape of fields, roads, canals, dykes and settlements, laid out in accordance with classical and Renaissance planning principles. A grid of canals parallels the grid of roads in the Beemster.
The universe is asymmetric and I am persuaded that life, as it is known to us, is a direct result of the asymmetry of the universe or of its indirect consequence.

Louis Pasteur (December 27, 1822 – September 28, 1895) was a French biologist, microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization. He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of diseases, and his discoveries have saved many lives ever since. He reduced mortality from puerperal fever, and created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax. His medical discoveries provided direct support for the germ theory of disease and its application in clinical medicine. He is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization. He is regarded as one of the three main founders of bacteriology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch, and is popularly known as the "father of microbiology" Source Wikipedia.

This may be a challenging image. We all want to see detail in wildlife shots, and this isn't about detail. It's butt-simple by design, yet immensely complex due to the layered textures: a dense stand of Red Alder through a telephoto lens, with a million falling snowflakes (each one different, they say) filling (clogging?) the gap between camera and subject. Almost abstract, but not. Definitely a sense of "otherness".
And the placement of the Bald Eagle, at the intersection of imaginary horizontal and vertical "thirds lines", was intentional. I've been known to rant against blindly adhering to rules, so let's say this conforms to recognized principles of visual design.

At first I had reservations about photographing the beggar alone. I didn't want to take advantage of his situation and act against my principles. But when the lady next to him entered the stage, everything changed. She stood for maybe everything the beggar did not have: wealth, happiness and the chocolate side of life. This contrast between the two people gave the photo a socially critical expression.
Through this contrast, a message is conveyed to the viewer. The photo shows that life is not fair and that there is a gap between people that cannot always be overcome. It challenges the viewer to think about social conditions and to show solidarity with those who are on the worse side.
Art is also communication. It is not only about visual appeal, but also about making a statement. Contrasts are a powerful tool to create meaning in an image and convey a message. This is exactly what I wanted to show with this photo, which I took in Aix-en-Provence in France in the summer of 2017.
Well I have principles or the environment I live in that tells me that this movement is forbidden in all its forms and ways but I really like the picture, I find it a work of art that should not be deleted

🇬🇧 The fort’s original layout followed the principles of Renaissance military architecture: a square layout with four arrowhead-shaped bastions. Built from CORAIL stone (*1), its walls reach up to 18 metres in height and are 2.5 metres thick in places. The main gate was designed with a vaulted ceiling and reinforced doors to withstand heavy attacks. The Omani Arabs added Islamic elements such as prayer niches, ablution areas and Arabic inscriptions carved into the walls.
(*1,) Mombasa is built on a peninsula, with islands protecting it from the harsh conditions of the ocean and forming a channel through the CORAL reef – a material used here for the construction of houses and buildings.

In late July, I was contacted by Denise Szakaly, Lead Graphic Designer for WNC Magazine, saying they were going to do a short history on Grist Mills in North Carolina and were considering three of my photographs, Dellinger Mill, Mingus Mill, and Murray's Mill. I was again contacted in August saying my photographs of Dellinger and Mingus Mills had been selected for publication in their September issue.
On the same day in July, I was contacted by Emma J. Williams, Managing Editor of Schmap Guides saying I was on the short list for their September Guide of Chattanooga, TN for my photo of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. I was later notified that my photograph would be used.

When the company I worked for introduced Quality Assurance principles in 1988, as part of my role I taught the history and application of Quality Management techniques to my staff. I used to hold up Arnott's Biscuits as a leading example. All Aussies will know and love Arnott's wonderful biscuits.....until not all that long ago they used to deliver their products in sparkling red vans that were never dirty, always shining clean and personally I had never found an Arnott's Biscuit that I didn't like nor that was presented and opened without perfection. Now those to me at the time were some important hallmarks of TQM (Total Quality Management) that I thought were great examples for my students....exceeding customer's expectations, consistent quality of product.
I know many of you will have studied and applied this stuff in your professional and perhaps personal lives in recent times. This mural of an Arnott's advertising sign brought back those memories and I still love their biscuits (many made within a couple of kilometres from us in Brisbane, at times I can still smell their vanilla creams!) - although they are not so good for me health wise these days. Sadly in some ways, Arnotts was sold to Campbell's (soups) of the USA quite a few years ago, amid some controversy about selling off the farm and is now owned by American investment company KKR - see link below.
Today, they have modified their advertising to simply..."There is no substitute".

Gyeongbokgung (景福宮; lit. Blessing Scenery Palace), also known as Gyeongbokgung Palace, was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty. Built in 1395, it is located in northern Seoul, South Korea. The largest of the Five Grand Palaces built by the Joseon dynasty, Gyeongbokgung served as the home of the royal family and the seat of government.
Gyeongbokgung continued to serve as the main palace of the Joseon dynasty until the premises were destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592–1598) and abandoned for two centuries. However, in the 19th century, all of the palace's 7,700 rooms were restored under the leadership of Prince Regent Heungseon during the reign of King Gojong. Some 500 buildings were restored on a site of over 40 hectares. The architectural principles of ancient Korea were incorporated into the tradition and appearance of the Joseon royal court.
In the early 20th century, much of the palace was systematically destroyed by Imperial Japan during its occupation of Korea. On January 21, 1963, it was designated as a cultural property. Since the 1990s, the walled palace complex is gradually being restored to its original form. It also houses the National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum within the premises of the complex.

This is the road my property is on. It leads to a ranch I worked on in the 80s. Two big principles of landscape photography: getting up early and cropping your image.
At some point it was bound to happen. The edifice of reality slips and there it is: the essense of reality.
Happy Earth Day 2021! April 22nd of this year marks the 51st anniversary of this event. How will you be celebrating it? I'll be outside pulling weeds to make more room in the flower bed for the iris and tulips in bloom (about as glamorous as it gets, for now). If you plan to celebrate this day by going for a hike, then remember to pack out what you pack in and follow the Leave No Trace Principles.
This image was captured during a 5-day stay at Camp Denali, in Denali National Park 7 years ago (gee, was it that long ago?). Every morning, I'd wake early, get dressed, then grab camera and tripod and march up the gravel road to this little spot just in front of the main camp building. It's called Nugget Pond and, as you can see, it has a wonderful view of Denali Mountain and the Alaska Range, towering in the background over this mirror-smooth pond with a hint of mist rising up from the water.

Today is American Independence Day, aka July 4th, 4th of July. I will not be celebrating it in a traditional way with parades, picnics, or family get-togethers, but I did wake up this morning thinking of my country & what it means to me. I searched my home for a symbolic star & was interested to find only one--the simple star in the wooden nativity scene that I display year-round. For me, my love of country & of God are intertwined & I am most thankful for both. Being a librarian, I couldn't resist doing a little research on star symbolism. Not surprisingly, I found a plethora of information. What caught my imagination was a quote from the nineteenth century minister, Henry Ward Beecher (brother of Harriet Beecher Stow, who wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin"). He said, of the American flag,
"A thoughtful mind when it sees a nation's flag, sees not the flag, but the nation itself. And whatever may be its symbols, its insignia, he reads chiefly in the flag, the government, the principles, the truths, the history that belongs to the nation that sets it forth. The American flag has been a symbol of Liberty and men rejoiced in it.
The stars upon it were like the bright morning stars of God, and the stripes upon it were beams of morning light. As at early dawn the stars shine forth even while it grows light, and then as the sun advances that light breaks into banks and streaming lines of color, the glowing red and intense white striving together, and ribbing the horizon with bars effulgent, so, on the American flag, stars and beams of many-colored light shine out together ...."

The Four principles of Spirituality are...
The First Principle states:
"Whomsoever you encounter is the right one"
This means that no one comes into our life by chance. Everyone who is around us, anyone with whom we interact, represents something, whether to teach us something or to help us improve a current situation.
The Second Principle states:
"Whatever happened is the only thing that could have happened"
Nothing, absolutely nothing of that which we experienced could have been any other way. Not even in the least important detail. There is no "If only I had done that differently, then it would have been different". No. What happened is the only thing that could have taken place and must have taken place for us to learn our lesson in order to move forward. Every single situation in life which we encounter is absolutely perfect, even when it defies our understanding and our ego.
The Third Principle states:
"Each moment in which something begins is the right moment"
Everything begins at exactly the right moment, neither earlier nor later. When we are ready for it, for that something new in our life, it is there, ready to begin.
The Fourth Principle states:
"What is over, is over"
It is that simple. When something in our life ends, it helps our evolution. That is why, enriched by the recent experience, it is better to let go and move on.
If these words strike a chord, it's because you meet the requirements and understand that not one single snowflake falls accidentally in the wrong place!
Be good to yourself.
Love with your whole being.
Always be happy
Love like there's no tomorrow.
And if tomorrow comes, well, Love again......"

In the heart of sunset, he turned to me with a thoughtful expression and asked, “Do you understand the principles of desire?” The question caught me off guard. I was instantly beguiled. One of the principles of the Ion Mystical World is "The Incremental Metamorphosis Or Spiritual Transfiguration Of Reality".
Spiritual evolution does not normally take place due to large immediate changes, it requires learning, small increments that with the time factor and the preservation can change us spiritually.
An inner transformation or metamorphosis that in addition to transforming us ends up transforming those around us through our interactions. This network of interactions and transformations does not only change those with whom we interact but also with time, the World or Reality that surrounds us, multiplying, increasing real and lasting change with repercussions in time and thus also in the Future.
Like the caterpillar that turns into a butterfly but needs to feed, we also need knowledge and learning to strengthen our spirit and learning about ourselves, only then we can understand ourselves and understand better the others.
When the butterfly frees itself it interacts with its world, pollinating, reproducing itself or feeding other living beings, strange as it seems a single butterfly does not seem to make a difference but if it did not exist the repercussions would be huge in the natural world by the multiplier of their interaction and influence.
So we all have an important role in transforming this World and we must not give it up, as we will be giving up the future!

Um dos princípios do Mundo Místico de Ion é a " A Metamorfose Incremental Ou Transfiguração Espiritual Da Realidade" .
A Evolução espiritual não se dá normalmente por grandes transformações imediatas, necessita de aprendizagem, pequenos incrementos que com o factor tempo e a preserverança podem mudar-nos espiritualmente.
Uma transformação ou metamorfose interior que para além de nos transformar acaba por transformar os que nos rodeiam através das nossas interações. Esta rede de interações e transformações não mudam só aqueles com quem interagimos mas também com o tempo o Mundo ou a Realidade que nos rodeia multiplicando , incrementando uma mudança real e duradoira com repercussões no tempo e assim também no Futuro.
Tal como a lagarta que se transforma em borboleta mas precisa de se alimentar, também nós precisamos de conhecimento e aprendizagem para fortalecer o nosso espirito e a aprendizagem sobe nós proprios, só assim podemos compreender e entender também melhor os outros.
Quando a borboleta se liberta ela interage com o seu mundo, polinizando, reproduzindo-se ou alimentando outros seres vivos, por estranho que pareça uma só borboleta parece não fazer a diferença mas se ela não existisse as repercussões seriam enormes no Mundo natural pelo factor multiplicador da sua interação e influencia.
Todos temos então um papel importante de transformação neste mundo e não devemos abdicar dele, pois estaremos a abdicar do Futuro !

At the beginning of the 19th century, after the successful battle of Austerlitz, in which the French army defeated the coalition of the Russian and Austrian armies, Napoleon Bonaparte, artificer of that great victory, ordered the construction of one of the most incredible monuments in France to commemorate such an occasion. A neoclassical arch inspired by those built by the emperors of the Ancient Rome. Located at one of the edges of the Champs-Elysees, this imposing 50-meter-high building is located in the center of Charles de Gaulle Square and its visit includes the access to the top of the monument, with some of the best views of Paris.
My intention at first, was to photograph the arch from a place from which I had done years before, in a more centered position and with the lights of the incessant Parisian traffic in the direction of the monument. However, despite arriving there more than an hour before dusk, there were already several dozens of tourists taking selfies, something that is not surprising these days, but in this case it was really dangerous, since they were on a small strip that divides the avenue and is accessed by a crosswalk. After waiting half an hour and seeing that the number of people was not reduced and that it was impossible to get a clean image from that place, I decided to look for another location.
The problem with this more lateral view of the building is that the lights of the cars did not fill the foreground of the image and passed too far. I decided, however, to continue capturing long exposures, and in one of them I was able to get the lights of a car that deviated from the main route. Once again, the plan wasn´t as I had planned, but in these cases, improvisation is the key to achieving a quality image. I could not leave Paris without a good photograph of this grandiose arch that has always fascinated me.

A principios del siglo XIX, tras la exitosa batalla de Austerlitz, en la que el ejército francés derrotó a la coalición de los ejércitos ruso y austríaco, Napoleón Bonaparte, artífice de aquella grandiosa victoria, mandó construir uno de los monumentos más increíbles de toda Francia para conmemorar tal ocasión. Un arco neoclásico inspirado en aquellos construidos por los emperadores de la Antigua Roma. Situado en uno de los extremos de los Campos Elíseos, esta imponente construcción de 50 metros de altura, se encuentra en el centro de la Plaza Charles de Gaulle y su visita incluye el acceso a la parte superior del monumento, con unas de las mejores vistas de París.
Mi intención en un primer momento, era fotografiar el arco desde un lugar desde el que lo había hecho años antes, en un posición más centrada y con las luces del incesante tráfico parisino en dirección al monumento. Sin embargo, a pesar de llegar allí más de una hora antes del anochecer, había ya allí varias decenas de turistas haciéndose selfies, algo que no es de extrañar en estos días, pero que en este caso era realmente peligroso, ya que se trata de una pequeña franja que divide la avenida y a la se accede por un paso de peatones que cruza la misma. Tras esperar media hora y ver que el número de personas no se reducía y de que era imposible conseguir una imagen limpia desde ese lugar, decidí buscar otra localización.
El problema de esta vista más lateral del edificio, es que las luces de los coches no llenaban el primer plano de la imagen y pasaban demasiado lejos. Decidí, no obstante, seguir capturando largas exposiciones, y en una de ellas pude conseguir las luces de un coche que se desviaba del recorrido principal. Una vez más el plan no salió como lo tenía pensado, pero en estos casos la improvisación es clave para conseguir una imagen de calidad. No podía marcharme de París sin una buena fotografía de este grandioso arco que siempre me ha fascinado.

Schloss Salem is a renowned boarding school with its headquarters in the former Salem Imperial Abbey in the Salem municipality not far from Lake Constance. The boarding school, which now operates at three locations, was founded in April 1920.
From the beginning the school was co-educational. The founders Kurt Hahn, Karl Reinhardt and Max von Baden were close to reform pedagogy and, despite differing political convictions, jointly developed the educational structures and principles that are still binding for Salem today.

The cosmic dance of Shiva symbolises the interplay of dynamic and static divine energy flow, containing the five principles of eternal energy — creation, preservation, destruction, illusion and emancipation. Shiva dances in ‘Rudra Tandava’ or the dance of destruction in an aureole of fire, creating wild thunder storms all around the universe, even shattering the Sun, the Moon and stellar bodies with his matted hair, marks of ash on the forehead, trident, drum, lifting his left leg and balancing over a demon of ignorance, with snakes crawling over his arms, legs, and braided hair that depict egotism. His upper right hand holds an hourglass drum or 'dumroo' standing for the male-female vital principle, while the lower gestures us to "Be fearless". A skull on his head depicts conquest over death. Goddess Ganga, epitomising the holy river, sits on his hairdo. His third eye represents omniscience, insight, and enlightenment.

See the solitude of the leaf.
It stands alone; clinging, holding, waiting.
Clinging to the last hints of summer, holding to its home, defying the odds of autumn.
Waiting for the breeze to pull it away from its summer home.

1. Communicates Idea – Score: 10
I believe my image communicates my idea of capturing the details we usually miss in life well. It allows you to see things that you would usually walk straight by.
2. Strong Focal Area – Score: 10
My image has an good focal area, focusing strongly on the leaf hanging from the twig.
3. Use of Line – Score: 10
I used the strong diagonal line of the twig to lead your eye to the focal area, the leaf.
4. Leading Line – Score: 10
The leading line in this image is the diagonal line of the twig that takes you directly to the focal area.
5. Contrast – Score: 9
I have a nice contrast between the grayish white background and the brown leaf and twig.
6. Texture – Score: 9
I used the smooth texture of the leaf and the twig to ad a soothing and calming affect.
7. Geometry – Score: 9
I used the triangular shape of the dog's head and slight rectangle shape f his body in this image.
8. Depth – Score: 10
The blurred out grey and white area serves as the back ground, and the leaf and twig serve as the foreground and focal area.
9. Movement – Score: 10
The angle of the twig helps draw your eye through the piece and bring you to the center focal area of the leaf.
10. Did You Meet the Assignment – Score: 10
I feel like I met my assignment, I showed good details of things you wouldn't normally notice.
Critique:
Describe: In this photo I see the lonely leaf clinging desperately to a twig. It’s one of the last leaves on this tree, stubbornly clinging on though winter.
Analyze: In this photo I used several elements and principles of design. The twig is a diagonal leading line to the focal area, the leaf.
Interpret: In this photo I was trying to express the solitude and loneliness of this leaf.
Judge: 1) I like how the main focal area is the leaf, and how the background is blurred out. 2) I wish I could’ve gotten the leaf a bit more in focus.
