On Saturday, December 15th, 2012, leaders from chapters around Maryland met at St. John Baptist Church in Columbia, MD, to officially launch the Healthcare is a Human Right! Campaign for Maryland. Groups from six counties reported on their history in the fight to protect their rights through a publicly funded universal healthcare system and also presented on each of our guiding human rights principles: Universality, Equity, Accountability, Transparency, and Participation. Turnout was impressive and spirits were high. Advocates meet others from across Maryland. The gathering broke into smaller discussion groups to talk about the Harriet Tubman quote: “I freed a thousand slaves I could’ve freed a thousand more if they knew they were slaves…” At the end of the day, we gathered in a large circle, where we lit candles and sing as Vermont Workers Center "passed the torch" (and one of their "Healthcare is a Human Right" banners) to Marylanders. A lot of people are passionate about user experience and have turned their passion into their jobs.
They try to do their utmost to get their work done, every single day.
I use the term ‘try’ because most of the time these people haven’t taken the time to get familiar with the basics of human behaviour.
Moreover, they don’t work using a scientific method or the appropriate tools to analyze human behaviour.
Usability can be good and can be bad. But how can you tell the difference if you don’t have the necessary knowledge of the perceptive cognitive system or don’t work with the appropriate tools?
It reminds me of the Apple advertisement for the launch of the first Macintosh.

Born in Victoria, BC, Canada in July of 1965, Warren is a pioneer of highly detailed comic art.
He has adhered to fine art sculpting principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative comic sculpture in the world.
As a youth in the Fairfield area of Victoria, Warren was encouraged by a number of mentors and teachers to sculpt in the free-standing form, a practice he has never strayed from. One of his funniest memories was when he was a young and impressionable teenager in an advanced sculpting class. Warren was enthusiastic when the teacher said they were going to sculpt a live model one evening. He was not quite prepared as the beautiful woman completely disrobed on the stage in front of the students. Being the shy, youngest member of the class he quickly turned around and sculptured a very long haired woman rising out of a rock at the waist. The model was not pleased with his work but the teacher loved it!
warren stratfordWarren soon began to concern himself with his lifelong objective: portraying the variations of humor and atmosphere brought on by comical things he thinks about. Rather than copy others as was the traditional practice of young artists, Warren learned from people around him, from the landscape itself, and from the works of his older contemporaries. Warren’s representation of humor are based on his observations of people he meets and interviews.
He often shows natural color by breaking it down into its different components as a prism does. Eliminating dull and boring from his palette, Warren rejected entirely the academic approach to comic sculpting.
Warren gIn the Signature Series Warren allows his vision of light to dissolve the real structures of his subjects. To do this he chose simple subjects, making several humorous studies of the same subject at different occupations or activities.
Warren shares his time between Asia and his home town Victoria. Look for more Signature Series as Warren is always finding humor wherever he goes.
Warren’s work is particularly well represented in shops around the world. It is also included in many famous private collections.

Missouri City Council members have approved amendments to the City's Architectural Design Standards in the Zoning Ordinance.
Maintaining strong development principles set in Missouri City's 2009 Comprehensive Plan; Council members have approved amendments to the City's Architectural Design Standards in the Zoning Ordinance.
After receiving feedback from business partners and holding several public hearings on the issues, City Council gave final approval at its July 18 meeting for the following improvements that will provide additional creative options to businesses:
*Expansion of the list of primary materials allowed on structures-brick and stone-to include architectural masonry units, which are concrete products.
*Use of business identity colors for exterior designs; and the incorporation of business identity colors on awnings and bollards.
*Requirement for uniformity of awnings within an integrated business development or shopping center; all awnings will need to be uniform in shape, material, color and design.
Architectural design proposals for new construction and redevelopment will continue to be reviewed within the City's 10-business day building permit review period.
The "Show Me" City is respected state- and nationwide for its adherence to superior codes and maintaining ordinances and regulations aimed at premium development requirements. For this commitment to public spaces such as roadways, parks and open expanses, the City earned a bronze designation from the Scenic City Certification Program. Scenic City, a project started in 2010 to combine a comprehensive set of model standards into one program, awarded inaugural certificates to 14 cities, including Missouri City.
"The visual appearance of our community is a priority with residents, City officials and local businesses," said Director of Development Services Gary Smith. "In keeping with our high standards, we regularly examine our development requirements to assure they produce the aesthetics our citizens and businesses expect."

World Press Freedom Day marked in Iraq
Baghdad, 03 May 2015 –World Press Freedom Day is marked on 3 May of every year to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
Today in Baghdad, UNESCO and the Iraqi Journalist Syndicate commemorated the Day with an event entitled “Let Journalism Thrive! Towards better Reporting, Gender Equality, and Media Safety in the Digital Age”. The event was held at the headquarters of the Iraqi Journalist Syndicate (IJS) in Baghdad in the presence of high state dignitaries, human rights activists, journalists and members of the international community.
The event was opened by the President of IJS Moaid Al-Lami, and featured speeches by Baha Hussein Ali Kamal Al-Araji, Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq, György Busztin, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Iraq, Athmar Majeed Al Shatarai, Member of the Board of Human Rights Commission and Axel Plathe, the Director of UNESCO Office for Iraq. The celebration was continued by a panel discussion on the topics of better reporting and independent journalism in the digital age, gender and the media, and safety of journalists and their sources.
“In promoting dialogue as an antidote to sectarian tensions, in countering hate speech, in amplifying the voice of the moderate majority, media personnel will bar the way of those fringe elements and provocateurs from the very attention they seek” highlighted in his address Gyorgy Busztin, DSRSG for Iraq and called all “to reverse the trend, to stop the trend, and to cooperate to foster freedom of expression, develop the media sector and provide universal access to information and knowledge in Iraq”.
On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day celebration, UNESCO and IJS signed an agreement to cooperate on fostering freedom of expression, developing the media sector and to provide universal access to information and knowledge in Iraq. A media training project entitled “Enhancing Iraqi journalists’ capacities in conflict sensitive reporting", which will be funded by IJS and implemented by UNESCO is a first concrete step of this enhanced cooperation.
