Abstract Elements
Abstractionists play with the elements and principles of design to create art works that interpret the everyday world into the language of colour, form, line and texture. Art from this genre expresses abstract ideas that can include realistic, recognizable elements to complete abstraction of the inspiration for the piece. Scott Garant, Sann Sann Lam and Richard Manilla share their interpretations of the everyday world, playing along the continuum of abstraction in their show, Abstract Elements.
Gladstone’s The Art Bar (named after a weekly figure drawing class ongoing since 1957) is our storefront room with large windows facing Queen Street West. It is an intimate space for parties, meetings, conferences or exhibitions.

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
The principles of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Emphasis- The background blurred, and the focus point takes up the space in one of the thirds (rule of thirds) and remains clear
Unity- Everything in the picture fits with one another, the colours blend very well and the background and focus go along with one another. Everything in the photo belongs.
Contrast- The darker background draws your eye to the brighter focal point and you tend to look at either the brighter parts of the picture or the darker.
Repitition/Pattern- There is a repetition of vertical lines coming from the wheat/grass creates a pattern in the background which makes you look throughout the picture.
Movement- The vertical lines move your eye through the photo, as well as the contrast of lilght and dark lines so you look in different areas.
The elements of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Line- There are vertical lines throughout the picture which create the feel of strength and moves your eye up and down the photo.
Colour- There are warm colours in the picture which fit together well and create harmony and a relaxing feel.
Tone/Value- The lighter third of the picture which is focused, draws more attention than the rest of the picture which is slightly darker.
Form- Form is shown in the tall grass, the side lighting creates shadows and shows the grass is 3-dimensional which gives the photo some depth.
Texture- The texture of the seeds at the end of the grass was rough, it draws your eye towards it and creates a rigid harsh feeling.
4: Lighting
Type of lighting and why:
There is sunlight coming from above the picture, and there is also hard side lighting that creates shadows giving the grass 3-d form.
Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)
Corrections/adjustments made AND/OR techniques applied:
-Focused on the grass
-raised contrast
-adjusted tone curves
-resized to x1000 width
Objective 6: Critique
Analyse your photograph for strengths and areas for improvement (consider elements and principles of design, lighting, exposure, overall feel, etc.)
Strength
-The unity in the picture was good because everything had a sense of belonging
-The colours in the picture were good because the warm colours complimented each other and gave the picture harmony
Improvement
-To use the reflectors next time to create a better source of lighting to add more form to the picture
I choose this on because the pattern, or keeping design in a certain format, itself is cool but it also can folded onto itself and it looks the same.

A two-page draft list of principles for the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), that mirrors the views of the national office, is circulated in the Washington, D.C. area in June 1969 prior to the group’s national convention that month in Chicago.
Three distinct ideological viewpoints were emerging within the largest organization that grew out of the New Left of the 1960s.
The best organized was The Progressive Labor Party-dominated Worker-Student Alliance that emphasized class struggle and rejected Black and Third World nationalism as “reactionary.”
The national office of SDS headed up another faction--the Revolutionary Youth Movement—that identified Third World struggles against the U.S. around the world as the principal contradiction and urged support for those struggles and an armed struggle within the U.S. The group also strongly identified with the youth counter-culture of the 1960s and would take the Weatherman name from a line in a Bob Dylan song.
The third faction to emerge within SDS was named the Revolutionary Youth Movement II and took its cues from Mao Zedong and the People’s Republic of China—upholding class struggle, but also emphasizing support for national liberation movements, including Black nationalism in the U.S. and particularly the Black Panther Party. The faction believed armed struggle within the U.S. was inevitable, but did not believe conditions were ripe at the time.
The convention formalized the split between the three factions, with the Worker-Student Alliance faction ultimately taking the SDS name until they changed it to the Committee Against Racism (CAR) several years later.
The national office faction ultimately became the Weather Underground, first organizing a “Days of Rage” in Chicago in October 1969 where about 1,000 participants battled police for several days. Injuries were inflicted on both sides and dozens arrested. Many in the Weatherman faction went underground at this point and the name was later changed to Weather Underground. The group would go on to conduct a symbolic bombing campaign against political targets, including the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon and the State Department in the Washington, D.C. area.
The third faction quickly split up with many adherents joining Maoist-oriented groups, including the newly formed October League and the existing Revolutionary Union (later Revolutionary Communist Party).
