The Epic Seascape! Malibu Sea Caves!
Landscape photography is not only about traveling through space, but it is also about traveling through time. One may return to the same beach time and again throughout the seasons to find a million different universes, changing in an infinitude of manners with each passing wave.
Not only do we voyage outwardly to get the shot, but we travel even further inwardly. While I spend my year trekking along the John Muir Trail, and on through Zion, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and the Colorado Plateau, my heart always finds its home in these Malibu sea caves, where I have stood in awe during all hours of the day and night.
Included within are a few shots that only I have so far captured, including a miraculous winter solstice sunrise.

Hepatica acutiloba - "Sharp-lobed Hepatica"
One of the Spring Ephemerals found here on the Paleozoic Plateau of northeast Iowa. It appears on our rich woodland soils from late March through late April.
Native Americans used a tea made from the leaves of this species to help with liver ailments, as a laxative and as a digestion aid. As a folk remedy by early settlers it was used similarly to treat fevers, poor digestion, liver ailments and coughs.
It's use as a treatment for liver ailments by Native Americans is a great example of the "Doctrine of Principles", the principle/theory that because the leaves were shaped like the liver, it could be used to treat problems with that particular part of the human body.

Effective bicycle parking incorporates a number of principles. At the public library in downtown Victoria, good quality CORA cluster racks provide good parking; many of the racks are also under cover in the building design, providing weather protection. Racks are in plain view of library windows to provide an extra measure of security from informal surveillance.

How to cheat in Maya 2012 – Tools and Techniques for Character Animation
The 12 principles of animation were identified by Disney to help guide animators to make the best animations possible.
1. Squash and stretch is said to be the most important principle. It is most clearly seen in cartoon animations such as Looney Tunes however can also be implemented in 3D animation to show the distribution of weight and show an objects speed as just some examples. It is important to remember however that as you use squash and stretch, the objects volume needs to be the same throughout.
2. Anticipation shows the audience that an action is about to happen. An example is bending your knees before a jump. Anticipation shows that the character is planning to do something, often without it the character looks like it is moving without meaning to. Although this can be useful in certain situations, in most it helps the character look as if they are really alive as they are thinking about what they are about to do.
3. Staging is how you set up the scene to get the most out of the action being portrayed. Things that need to be considered are where the audience will be looking when the action is happening, how the camera moves in the scene, where the action will be happening, how the scene is laid out and what the lighting will bring to the scene.
4. Straight ahead & pose to pose are two ways at which you can approach animating. Straight ahead is by approaching it frame by frame whereas pose to pose means drawing out each pose then filling in the in-betweens later. For character based emotion scenes it is a good idea to use pose to pose to make sure you get the extremes of the emotion in the animation however for dynamic actions it might make more sense to use the straight ahead approach to make sure the timing is correct.
5. Overlapping action & follow through is basically down the physics. When objects move, not everything moves in unison, somethings lag behind the action and then catch up and travel past the motion. This can be seen in the swinging of an arm for example. The upper arm, lower arm and hand will all move at different rates, therefore the motion is overlapped and follows through.
6. Slow in and slow out (or ease in and ease out) is all down to how quickly or slowly an objects accelerates or decelerates. The majority of objects do not move in a linear way, therefore animators need to add slow in/slow out to add realism. In Maya this can be controlled in the graph editor or even where you place your key frames, for a smoother motion however it might be easier to use the graph editor.
7. Arcs are needed to add realism to natural actions otherwise the movements will appear robotic. It is important to look at adding arcs wherever possible and not just on the parts with the biggest movements.
8. Secondary action really helps bring the animation to life. It rare that only one thing would be moving in the scene. It shouldn’t take focus away from the primary action but compliment it. Without secondary animation the scene would look like it is just going through the motions and would not look as believable as one that does include secondary animation.
9. Timing is important as it does not only show the motion of objects in the scene, but brings meaning to those motions. The rate in which someone looks up at another can mean the difference between reluctance and interest as just one example. By playing around with the key frames and graph editor we can drastically change the emotion displayed.
10. Exaggeration can be used to clearly explain the message you are trying to get across. It doesn’t need to be used to just exaggerate squash and stretch where it can be most clearly seen. Timing can be exaggerated to clearly convey the characters emotion.
11. Solid drawing can be applied to CG animation. Pose, form, perspective, volume and force need to be considered. These things apply to modeling, rigging and skinning as well as animation. Life drawing classes can help with all of these.
12. Appeal can apply to all of the principles and the overall effect of them. If one of these principles is off slightly, this will have an effect to the appeal of the animation. The detail must apply, as well as how the character moves, as well as the way the animation is staged. They must all coexist.
The LED light is a G4 1,5W (eq 15W) 6 Leds SMD 5630 Warm white (12V/24V) and runs off our solar battery bank. The light is operated by a tiny cheap Chinese motion detector, so that when we come in in the evening, the light comes on automatically.
The boots rack in on top of the last couple of metres of our rocket mass heater exhaust, which gives out a gentle heat to dry boots, hats and jackets.

The Journal asked writers and illustrators to contribute a series based on design icon Dieter Rams’ Ten Principles of Good Design manifesto. Each writer wrote on one of Rams’ principles; each illustrator reacted to a writer’s essay. This is the seventh illustration from the ten-part series.
Mandy Brown wrote on Rams’ seventh principle, Good design is long-lasting. Ms Brown is the Creative Director at Etsy, Contributing Editor for A List Apart, and Editor and Co-Founder of the new small press A Book Apart. She writes about books and the reading experience at A Working Library. Ward Jenkins created the above illustration based on Ms Brown’s essay. Mr Jenkins is a Portland-based animator and illustrator. He recently illustrated the hardcover children’s book, How to Train with a T. Rex and Win 8 Gold Medals, written by Michael Phelps and Alan Abrahamson.
Vancouver’s Chinese Garden was built in 1985-1986 using the time honored principles and techniques of the original Ming dynasty garden. Fifty-two master craftsmen from Suzhou China, working with Canadian counterparts, completed this landscape masterpiece within a year. The intricate halls and walkways are constructed with precise joinery and without the use of nails, screws or glue. The Garden opened on April 24, 1986.
Based on the principle of collaborative design, the Garden compliments the adjacent public park; enhancing the view in both places.
For the architect, the botanist, the student of history, the lover of beauty, the Garden provides insights into the subtle wonders to be found within the walls of this living treasure.
Warren Stratford poly resin professions figurines. orn in Victoria, BC, Canada in July of 1965, Warren is a pioneer of highly detailed comic art.
He has adhered to fine art sculpting principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative comic sculpture in the world.
As a youth in the Fairfield area of Victoria, Warren was encouraged by a number of mentors and teachers to sculpt in the free-standing form, a practice he has never strayed from. One of his funniest memories was when he was a young and impressionable teenager in an advanced sculpting class. Warren was enthusiastic when the teacher said they were going to sculpt a live model one evening. He was not quite prepared as the beautiful woman completely disrobed on the stage in front of the students. Being the shy, youngest member of the class he quickly turned around and sculptured a very long haired woman rising out of a rock at the waist. The model was not pleased with his work but the teacher loved it!
warren stratfordWarren soon began to concern himself with his lifelong objective: portraying the variations of humor and atmosphere brought on by comical things he thinks about. Rather than copy others as was the traditional practice of young artists, Warren learned from people around him, from the landscape itself, and from the works of his older contemporaries. Warren’s representation of humor are based on his observations of people he meets and interviews.
He often shows natural color by breaking it down into its different components as a prism does. Eliminating dull and boring from his palette, Warren rejected entirely the academic approach to comic sculpting.
Warren gIn the Signature Series Warren allows his vision of light to dissolve the real structures of his subjects. To do this he chose simple subjects, making several humorous studies of the same subject at different occupations or activities.
Warren shares his time between Asia and his home town Victoria. Look for more Signature Series as Warren is always finding humor wherever he goes.
Warren’s work is particularly well represented in shops around the world. It is also included in many famous private collections.

The great thing about the beach is that it presents an entirely different universe from season to season, from day to day, from hour to hour, from second to second, with the ever changing wind, tides, clouds, and sun. A split second with tumbling surf and a sinking sun can make a vast different, resulting in entirely different photographs.
