Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
Texture – The scratches on the doors and the grain I added to the image make it look like a really old photo. Nothing in the photo really looks soft, making the photo have a more serious feel to it.
Value / Tone – Since the photo is in black and white, the entire photo just has different tones of grey. The darker tones and the lighter tones make the whole photo look more three dimensional, especially inside, where there are more shadows. The vignette I added makes the tones around the edges slightly darker and makes you focus more on the center and right side of the image.
Pattern / Repetition – While they aren’t exactly the same, all the doors are similar. You can guess what the other doors would look like even though they aren’t in the photo. You can tell what the background outside might look like as well. This adds interest. Lastly, the windows also repeat, and they get smaller as you go left, which makes it look more 3D.
Contrast – The really old looking image contrasts with the relatively new looking car. Also, the tones contrast and there are areas in the image that are pure white and pure black. The brighter areas draw more attention than the darker areas.
Critiquing
I changed the photo to black and white because the colours didn’t really look that good, but I liked the composition of the image. I also liked the grain I added to the image. Zooming in and backing away a bit more might have made a better photo.

The principles I used for this photo is Emphasis and movement. I used detergent and a blacklight to create the dripping shape on the mirror. I think I did a good job on creating the interesting focal point. One thing I'd definitely work on would be move towards a more parallel angle.
For this project our class had to take a long exposure, light painted still life that uses the basic principles of photography to create a visually appealing photo. I first used balance by placing rosemary and dead flower petals/leaves around my items to have a main focal point, the chalice, enhanced by the other colors and background. I also wanted to make sure I had unity so I used dark colors like burgundy and black throughout the photo which then gave emphasis through color to the rosemary and gold lettering. Unfortunately I had a huge streak of light going through the top of my photo, so I had to learn how to edit that out. I also turned up the saturation on my leaves and on the small bottle. The smaller chalice was initially black looking so I turned up the exposure on that as well as turning the exposure down on the main glass.
For these photos I had to borrow a tripod but even like that, many of my photos were blurry or had streaks of light from the inadequate flash light I was using. I could have done a better job with editing the light streak out and reducing blurriness of some parts, but I think this is still one f the better photos I have taken and I think I improved from Photo one of 1st tri last year.

What happens is that the binocular provides the magnification, 6x to 8x typically - and the front lens brings the subject distance from infinity up to the back focus distance of the lens. At the same time, because the 2 objectives are looking through opposite sides of the same lens, the lens also provides parallax correction, bringing both eyes to bear on the subject in the plane of focus.
The "power" of the front lens is generally defined as 250mm divided by its focal length - so for example, a 125mm lens would be considered a 2x magnifier. This becomes a multiple of the power of the binocular, so that a 125mm (2x) lens on the front of an 8x binocular becomes a 16 power microscope.
A great advantage of this optical design is working distance: if the front lens is a simple lens or achromat, its focal length is essentially equal to its back focus, so you have a 16x microscope that doesn't have to get closer than 5 inches from its subject. This is quite different from what you get with a stereo microscope of conventional design.
I used this for years to perform close inspection of injection molds while the mold was still mounted in the molding press, saving hours of labor with each use; I made a duplicate copy to sell to a moldmaking company whose owner had the opportunity to see this in practice.
The principle on this poster that really catches my eye is the emphasis, because of the bright colors used to create a proportion. The colors give a fresh look to poster, which is really suitable to the meaning.

The principles of design in this photo are contrast and emphasis. The dark colors of the shadow are emphasized against the light. To take this photo I went outside when the sun was setting and had a light shine through to cast a shadow. I think I did well with having the shadow contrast and show the shape of the person. One thing I would change is to have the light more even throughout the picture.
Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, Mother's Day 2008
Anti-war / anti-nuclear weapons activists converged on the Naval Submarine Base Kitsap-Bangor on Saturday May 10th, 2008 in a Mothers Day commemorative action. Participant's engaged in a traditional vigil and nonviolent civil resistance direct action to oppose the weapons of mass destruction as they exist in their offensive capacity on the base. The offensive capacity of the weapons is in contravention of several legally binding international agreements. Unfortunately, the United States Government is in flagrant violation of these treaties. The abnegation of international law by the Government of the United States of America imperils the world. Decision-makers behave in ways that are Machiavellian. They employ the Hobbesian model of power-politics where "might makes right" and the "ends justify the means", which is then applied to international discourse. However, there is a better way.
By respecting international laws and agreements, the United States can help to promote and create an international environment of equity and respect.
One of the problems with the trident nuclear missile programs is that in addition to their purported role as a well-intentioned defense, these missiles also serve as a basic international bully mechanism. The trident missile system deployed via Bangor submarine base is estimated to be capable of wreaking a several months' long nuclear winter over much of the globe.
Instead of operating in the realm of power-politics where the application, or the threat of application, of brute force hangs over international proceedings: I challenge the Government and the People of the USA to pursue a better way. I challenge the Gov't and People of the United States of America (including myself) to work for a foreign policy that truly values human rights, human dignity, human health, environmental health, fairness and equity, truth, honesty, respectfulness (for ourselves individually, for each other, and for the Earth). The means create the ends.

Māgha Pūjā day marks the four auspicious occasions, which happened nine months after the Enlightenment of the Buddha at Veḷuvana Bamboo Grove, near Rājagaha in Northern India. On that occasion, as recorded in the commentary to the Mahāsamayasutta, DN-Comm 20) four marvellous events occurred:
1. There were 1,250 Arahata, that came to see the Buddha that evening without any schedule.
2. All of them were Arhantas, the Enlightened One, and all of them were ordained by the Buddha himself.
3. The Buddha gave those Arhantas principles of the Buddhism, called "The ovadhapatimokha". Those principles are: - To cease from all evil,- To do what is good,- To cleanse one's mind;
4. it was the full-moon day. The Buddha gave an important teaching to the assembled monks on that day 2,500 years ago called the 'Ovādapātimokha'[1] which laid down the principles of the Buddhist teachings. In Thailand, this teaching has been dubbed the 'Heart of Buddhism'.read more information

The principles of design used were symmetrical balance and emphasis because of the movement of the lines creating a very clear focal point. I created this by using lasers and a mirror. I think I did a good job on the angle and I would change the quality of the picture if I could.
Yes, you guessed right, that really is me on the left. That was still in the old millennium.
The decorated gentleman on the right is Giorgio Carbone, a.k.a Sua Tremendità Giorgio I, Prince of Seborga.
"Prince of what??"
Allow me to explain:
The story of the Principality of Seborga is quite a curious one, which Sua Tremendità Giorgio I is happy to explain at great length and with vivid passion to at first mildly interested and eventually increasingly amused and spellbound visitors to the lovely Ligurian village of Seborga over a lovely bottle (or two, or three) of wine and a hearty dish of pasta.
Those of you who are willing to invest half of your lunch break shall feel encouraged to read a quite clever and delightful (read: very British) travel report on Seborga by Anthony Peregrine which appeared in the Telegraph in 1999.
And since my family happens to be acquainted with his family, we visited Seborga a few times on the occasion of our trips to Italy. It was always a lot of fun.
I highly recommend that you do so, too.

The Epic Seascape! Malibu Sea Caves!
Landscape photography is not only about traveling through space, but it is also about traveling through time. One may return to the same beach time and again throughout the seasons to find a million different universes, changing in an infinitude of manners with each passing wave.
Not only do we voyage outwardly to get the shot, but we travel even further inwardly. While I spend my year trekking along the John Muir Trail, and on through Zion, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and the Colorado Plateau, my heart always finds its home in these Malibu sea caves, where I have stood in awe during all hours of the day and night.
Included within are a few shots that only I have so far captured, including a miraculous winter solstice sunrise.

Garrison Green is also home to Peacekeepers Park. This park is the site of an annual event that pays tribute to the men and women who serve in Canada’s peacekeeping forces. CLC is committed to honouring the past, while creating vibrant communities for Canadians.
