Any way you look at it, “genocide” is an emotional word. It’s made up of “genos,” meaning race or people, and “cide,” to kill.
Genocide is the life study of Dr. Gregory Stanton, the founder and director of Genocide Watch, the world’s first organization to deal exclusively with this issue.
Dr. Stanton, a Harvard Divinity School graduate with a PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Chicago, was in his second year at Yale Law School.
Eventually he founded the International Campaign to End Genocide. It has two fundamental principles: “Unlike a hurricane,” genocide is predictable, and the phenomenon has become wretchedly common.
Stanton’s belief is that genocide is not only predictable but also preventable. He traces its normal progress through eight steps. The world needs to recognize the early signs. They are, in this order, classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, extermination and denial.
This is scary. Stanton makes it clear that Iran has classified and symbolized Israel through exclusionary ideology and hate speeches.
Several weeks ago, Canada severed its ties with Iran precisely on these grounds. John Baird, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that the Iranian regime “engages in racist anti-Semitic rhetoric and incitement to genocide.”
Stanton has called for an international campaign to abolish the recurring crime of genocide and for the world to take action, as Canada has, to ostracize Iran and curb its genocidal intent.
When the problem of bullying was exposed in our public schools, Americans quickly said that something needed to be done about this. It seems that a similar outcry of public opinion now needs to be heard regarding the far more dangerous problem of countries that talk and act like bullies on the international scene.
The Bible does address genocide, albeit in a round about way. Proverbs 6:16-19 says “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among the brethren.” As you can see, many of Stanton’s eight steps are covered here. As a result, we need not only make sure there is a public outcry, we must also adhere to the words of Psalm 122:6 and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Snow was predicted for sea level in Alameda (that's us!) this weekend (2/27/2011) -- it did not happen.

It was definitely cold enough (we broke records for low temp.) but the moisture went east and west of us. Bummer! I was looking forward to it -- had newly-charged batteries in my camera and everything!!
So, it was back to the old photos to find the last snow that I experienced, way back in 1974.
Sure wish I still had that Camaro!

ue to system problems I was unable to upload this series of images until today.
On the 4th & 5th October 2016, leading international thinkers in the areas of Data, Predictive Models, Technology and Decision making gathered at the RDS, Dublin, for Predict 2016. The speakers, many of whom I managed to photograph, discussed the latest progress in Predictive Modelling and its future – from Data to Software and Hardware technology, plus Predictive Modelling methods and the best examples of Data-driven Decision-making.
The organisers kindly invited me to the Predict event at the RDS. In case your are interested I used a Sony A7RM2 coupled with a Sony 29-135 full frame lens. The lens does attract a lot of attention which allows me to to have interesting interesting people … volunteers, students from Brazil, photographers etc.
I then asked the students to predict what the graph would look like not for depth, but for altitude. This modifies the equation because now d is a negative number (the "depth" above a point.)
We expected a decreasing linear graph from this equation.
This is problematic for a couple of reasons. The first is that it would imply that the pressure at some point would become zero, and then would start to become negative.)

The pressure asymptotically approaches zero. This is because air doesn't have a constant density.
