On the 4th & 5th October 2016, leading international thinkers in the areas of Data, Predictive Models, Technology and Decision making gathered at the RDS, Dublin, for Predict 2016. The speakers, many of whom I managed to photograph, discussed the latest progress in Predictive Modelling and its future – from Data to Software and Hardware technology, plus Predictive Modelling methods and the best examples of Data-driven Decision-making.
The organisers kindly invited me to the Predict event at the RDS. In case your are interested I used a Sony A7RM2 coupled with a Sony 29-135 full frame lens. The lens does attract a lot of attention which allows me to to have interesting interesting people … volunteers, students from Brazil, photographers etc.

As predicted, early winter of 2013-14 has witnessed a widespread irruption of Snowy Owls from the Arctic to the Eastern seaboard of the United States. This particular owl (either a female or an immature bird) was perched near the runway at the Manassas Regional Airport in Northern Virginia, about 40 miles Southwest of Washington DC., on December 5, 2013. Alert birders may notice that there is also a hunting female Northern Harrier at top left in this photo.
At a distance of about 400 yards and in cloudy, somewhat misty conditions, I wasn't able to get a shot to compare in clarity with the one of a Snowy Owl at Dulles International Airport in January, 2006 (photo earlier in this Flickr collection) or the one in Sussex County, Delaware, in January, 2014 (photo is later in this gallery).
In 1995, MIT’s Nicholas Negroponte predicted that “being digital” would have us entering a realm increasingly unconstrained by the materiality of the world. Two decades later, our everyday lives are indeed ever more suffused by computation and calculation. But unwieldy materiality persists and even reasserts itself. Programmable matter, self-assembling structures, 3D/4D printing, wearable technologies and bio-inspired design today capture the attention of engineers, scientists and artists. “BEING MATERIAL” showcased recent developments in materials systems and design, placing this work in dialogue with kindred and contrasting philosophy, art practice and critique. Panels on the PROGRAMMABLE, WEARABLE, LIVABLE and INVISIBLE—along with a concert, AUDIBLE—explored new and unexpected meetings of the digital and material worlds.

As I predicted, Jaan had a wonderful and exhausting day at the camp!
When he and Will got off the train at the nearest village, there
weren't any cars around to get a ride in, so they started walking.
Before long a dump truck picked them up! Can you imagine? A
car ride is exciting to Jaan, what would he think of bouncing along in
the cab of a dump track?
The dump truck took them most of the way to the camp. At first Jaan
was really shy with his aunts (and all the Americans), but he warmed up
to them. He spent the day playing as hard as he could. Will didn't
even make him take a nap and by the time they were ready to come home,
Jaan was so tired that he was wobbly.
Raia and I had a wonderful day here. She was very sweet all day long.
Tanya came over to visit with us and cook. . . and enjoy the baby.
That
was really nice for me!
Just a quick thank you to everyone who sent things for us with them
team: we haven't even looked through everything--there was so much that
Will had to leave some at the camp!--but just the few things that we
saw before going to bed last night made the day seem like Christmas.
Thank you so much! We feel so loved!
There are a lot of problems for the camp. I won't go into details
right now, but please PRAY. As things get figured out, I'll post an
update (probably on our prayer request page).
Today I attended the Predict Conference 2015 at the RDS. It was my first opportunity to try the new Sony A7RM2 in a low light environment. My reasons for buying the A7RM2 was that it is supposed to work well in low light and also it can be set to silent mode. Today I did not use silent mode but I certainly was in a low light environment.
To be honest, I was disappointed. The camera did not work as well as I had expected but at this stage I do not know if the kit lens is responsible for my disappointment.
I've also encountered a problem with the camera because it stopped switching automatically between finder and monitor. It now gets stuck in finder mode. If I let it sit for a few minutes, then turn it off and on, it will function normally for a while and then the problem returns. This is really annoying.
I reset the camera to factory setting but the problem remains. I need to investigate further.
When I reset the camera I forgot that the date and time information would be set to a factory default date and time.
Given a limited, pre-defined set of station names, there's a known subset of characters that can be entered next, so dim out the invalid ones. It took a moment to figure out what's going on at first, but did actually make it a bit easier thereafter.
Also the on-screen keyboard is thankfully localised from AZERTY to QWERTY :)

Snow was predicted for this morning but when it had not started by the time we went to bed after midnight, I assumed the forcast was wrong. Boy was I mistaken! We woke up to about 3/4 inch of snow covering a solid sheet of ice! Since it was a holiday for most and school was already closed, I wasn't worried about getting to work but left early anyway. That gave me time to stop and take a few photos. I originally zoomed in on the sunrise but decided I liked the van in the photo to show that I was having to go to work in all of this.
That in 2010 Italy would win the world kickball statuette thingy.
and that Maradona would be beatified for his good work using the “Hand of God”.
As predicted on the blog, we have indeed had our new arrival and are just adjusting to the amazing and awesome experience of parenthood.
Story below and pics attached:
Everything started very slowly for me and I spent most of the 78 hours of labour at home, breathing and trying to rest and eat between contractions. The golden thread breath became an integral part of managing contractions, although I also found the TENS machine helpful for a while and used gas and air towards the end. Also had 3 walks around the neighbourhood, 3 showers and a bath at a friends house (as we don't have one)!
The birth centre at UCH finally accepted us at 8cm dilated and 54 hours after contractions started. They were very busy and understaffed so I couldn't use the birthing pool as I'd hoped. It might not have made a difference though, as it seemed that baby's head was stuck in my pelvis and facing the wrong way to come down the birth canal, so it was over to the labour ward and after a failed attempt at delivery with forceps, he was finally born by emergency caesarian.
Arlo Benjamin was born at 4.59am on his due date, face slightly squashed and damaged by the forceps but beautiful and healthy. We are very happy.
Thank you for all your help and advice, I really enjoyed the yoga classes. I am supposed to take it easy for 6 weeks cos of the caesarian but plan to come back to yoga after that - might see you at your class on a Wednesday.

Interactions among wind, waves, and upper-ocean currents are essential factors in predicting oil slick transport and fate. These complex interactions, however, make capturing their dynamics in simulations challenging, especially when turbulent weather conditions are present.
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative recently awarded Dr. William Drennan a grant to study how wind-wave-current interactions affect oil transport under significant wave influences, such as hurricanes. The researchers are taking a two-step approach that combines model simulations with parameters derived from laboratory wave tank experiments. Their goal is to improve our ability to monitor and contain oil in the event another spill occurs under high-turbulence conditions.

The Southern Caracara (Caracara plancus), also known as the Southern Crested Caracara, is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It formerly included the Northern Caracara (C. cheriway) of the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and northern South America, and the extinct Guadalupe Caracara (C. lutosa) as subspecies.
As presently defined, the Southern Caracara is restricted to central and southern South America. As its relatives, it was formerly placed in the genus Polyborus.
It has a total length of 50–65 cm (20–26 in) and a wingspan of 120-132 cm (47-52 in). Weight is 0.9-1.6 kg (2-3.5 lbs).[1] Individuals from the colder southern part of its range average larger than those from tropical regions (as predicted by Bergmann's rule) and are the largest type of caracara. The cap, belly, thighs, most of the wings and tail-tip are dark brownish, the auriculars, throat and nape are whitish-buff, and the chest, neck, mantle, back, uppertail-coverts, crissum and basal part of the tail are whitish-buff barred dark brownish. In flight, the outer primaries show a large conspicuous whitish-buff patch ('window'), as in several other species of caracaras. The legs are yellow and the bare facial skin and cere are deep yellow to reddish-orange. Juveniles resemble adults, but are paler, with streaking on the chest, neck and back, grey legs, and whitish, later pinkish-purple, facial skin and cere.

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it." -- Alan Kay
"The real romance is out ahead and yet to come. The computer revolution hasn't started yet. Don't be misled by the enormous flow of money into bad defacto standards for unsophisticated buyers using poor adaptations of incomplete ideas." -- Alan Kay
Alan Kay is one of the fathers of the idea of object-oriented programming (which he named), along with some colleagues at PARC and predecessors at the Norwegian Computing Center.
He is the conceiver of the Dynabook concept which defined the basics of the laptop computer and the tablet computer and he is also considered by some as the architect of the modern windowing graphical user interface (GUI).
SA Water – (Adelaide, South Australia, Australia)
The North South Interconnection System Project was proposed to improve water security for the Adelaide, Australia, region by linking the city of Adelaide’s separate northern and southern water zones through a series of new transfer pipelines, new pump stations, and a range of other enhancements to the existing water network. As part of the overall project, AssetWise Amulet provided decision support tools that deliver real-time operational analytics.
In the 2013/2014 financial year, the solution helped save AUD 3 million in electricity costs alone. A comparative reduction of more than AUD 400,000 also occurred over the last six months in network operations expenditure from optimized pumping and treatment plant operations. Additional savings are expected as more refined input costing data becomes available and the organization responds to new information about the cost impact of operational decisions.

The increasing prevalence of analytics and Big Data in both the private and public sector present novel challenges for privacy. In this presentation, an example of the concept of predictive privacy harms will be provided. What does it actually mean to predict (individual) behaviour? How do predictive analytics work? And how can predictive analytics turn into predictive privacy harms?
One of the most clichéd examples to illustrate the novel nature of this challenge is the notorious case of the Target pregnancy case. In 2012, the New York Times reported how the retail chain Target uses data mining to predict pregnancies in its female customers - regardless of whether this information has been shared with friends or family. While this example has been exhausted to such an extent that it almost amounts to a cliché, it is nonetheless an interesting starting point to investigate how we talk about and interpret predictive privacy harms in public discourse.
