Late last year the Rural Fire Service (RFS) introduced a new fire weather warning category system and this was the first time it had been raised to the Catastrophic Level. Strong winds and hot temperatures were predicted to combine to make the day very dangerous across a number of existing firegrounds around the state.
In this RFS Map its the Hillville Fire that is shown as potentially likely to burn to the coast to Old Bar, Wallabi Point, Hallidays Point and all the way to Tuncurry Forster.
While a very serious localised fire did erupt near Goldens Road and Breeze Parade in Forster fortunately other mapped areas remained relatively safe from further fire intrusion on that day although worse was to come later.
It was a very worrying day nevertheless as my own home was right in the middle of a remaining unburned section so we were on high alert and remained so for several days to come.
While the fires in the area have been now listed as under control its possible new fires could erupt as we move into summer with higher than normal temperatures and lower than normal rainfall predicted for summer.

(R) The image on the right is from the original soil scientist's field sheet.
Soil mapping is the process of delineating natural bodies of soils, classifying and grouping the delineated soils into map units, and capturing soil property information for interpreting and depicting soil spatial distribution on a map.
The soils and miscellaneous areas (e.g., Rock outcrop) in a survey area are in an orderly pattern that is related to the geology, landforms, topography, climate, and natural vegetation. Each kind of soil and miscellaneous area is associated with a particular kind of landform or with a segment of the landform. Soil scientists delineate these repeating patterns of landform segments, or natural bodies, on a map. By observing the soils and miscellaneous areas in the survey area and relating their position to specific segments of the landform, a soil scientist develops a concept, or model, of how they formed. Thus, during mapping, these models enable the soil scientist to predict with considerable accuracy the kind of soil or miscellaneous area on the landscape (Hudson, 1992).
The repetitive patterns imprinted in soils by the soil-forming factors can be observed at scales ranging from continental to microscopic. These patterns are the basis for soil identification and mapping at different scales. A system of terminology, definitions, and operations can be ascribed to the various scales. Hierarchical systems of classes and subclasses are established to produce groupings at the different scales.
Commonly, individual soils on the landscape merge into one another as their characteristics gradually change. To construct an accurate soil map, however, soil scientists must determine the boundaries between the soils. Some boundaries are sharp, where soils change over a few meters, while others are more gradual. Soil scientists can observe only a limited number of pedons. Nevertheless, these observations, supplemented by an understanding of the soil-vegetation-landscape relationship, are sufficient to verify predictions of the kinds of soil and to determine their boundaries.
Soil scientists record the characteristics of the pedons, associated plant communities, geology, landforms, and other features that they study. They describe the kind and arrangement of soil horizons and their color, texture, size and shape of soil aggregates, kind and amount of rock fragments, distribution of plant roots, reaction, and other features that enable them to classify and identify soils (see chapters 2 and 3 for details). They describe plant species present (their combinations, productivity, and condition) to classify plant communities, correlate them to the soils with which they are typically associated, and predict their response to management and change.
After the soil scientists identify and describe the properties of landscape components, or natural bodies of soils, the components are correlated to an appropriate taxonomic class, which is used for naming map units. Correlation, or comparison of individual soils with similar soils in the same taxonomic class in other areas, confirms data and helps the staff determine the need to assemble additional data. Taxonomic classes are concepts. Each taxonomic class has a set of soil characteristics with precisely defined limits. The classes are used as a basis for comparison to classify soils systematically. Soil Taxonomy, the system of taxonomic classification used in the United States, is based mainly on the kind and character of soil properties and the arrangement of horizons within the profile (Soil Survey Staff, 1999).
While a soil survey is in progress, samples of some of the soils in the area are collected for laboratory analyses. Soil scientists interpret the data from these analyses and tests as well as the field observed characteristics of the soil properties to determine the range of values for key soil properties for each soil. They also use these data to determine the expected behavior of the soils under different uses. Soil property data is organized and stored in a database, where it is used to generate soil interpretations for use and management. Interpretations for all of the soils are field tested through observation of the soils in different uses and under different levels of management. Special studies to document dynamic soil properties that are affected by use and management may be conducted. Data are assembled from other sources as well, such as research information and field experience of specialists.
After survey staff locate and identify the significant natural bodies of soil in the survey area, they draw the boundaries of these bodies on a map and identify each as a specific map unit by name. Imagery showing trees, buildings, roads, and rivers is commonly used as a base map to help in locating boundaries accurately. Tonal shades and patterns on aerial photographs or digital images are used to indicate potential changes in vegetation, drainage conditions, parent materials, and other factors affecting surface reflectance. As digital mapping techniques are being increasingly integrated into mapping (see chapter 5), additional sources of information, such as multispectral bands, digital elevation models, and other data layers (such as geology), along with global positioning systems (GPS) are used to accurately locate map unit boundaries. Although the processes used in digital mapping techniques are different from nondigital conventional methods, the principles are the same.
In the United States, soil surveys vary in scale and in intensity of observations. The components of map units are designated by taxa in Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 1999) or as miscellaneous areas (i.e., nonsoil areas). In naming a map unit, soil taxa names (commonly a soil series name) are modified with phase terms (indicating surface texture, slope, flooding, stoniness, etc.) to convey information that is either more specific than the wider range of properties defined for the series (e.g., surface texture) or that represents a property outside of the soil itself (e.g., flooding). The phase commonly is a portion of the range of properties exhibited by the taxon. For example, a certain soil series may have slopes ranging from 3 to more than 60 percent but the map units are shown with narrower ranges (e.g., 3 to 8, 8 to 15, 15 to 25) to provide information that is useful in managing the soils in the area.
Historically, soil surveys have classified entire polypedons and grouped their properties for interpretative output as vector maps (polygons). Some contemporary surveys classify only certain soil properties, such as surface rock fragment cover, and output the information as raster maps, in which each pixel represents a specific value of the property. With these maps, commonly called “soil property maps,” the user can decide how to group or aggregate the information for their needs. Strictly speaking, maps of individual soil properties are not synonymous with soil surveys, which by definition delineate natural soil bodies.

Today I attended the Predict Conference 2015 at the RDS. It was my first opportunity to try the new Sony A7RM2 in a low light environment. My reasons for buying the A7RM2 was that it is supposed to work well in low light and also it can be set to silent mode. Today I did not use silent mode but I certainly was in a low light environment.
To be honest, I was disappointed. The camera did not work as well as I had expected but at this stage I do not know if the kit lens is responsible for my disappointment.
I've also encountered a problem with the camera because it stopped switching automatically between finder and monitor. It now gets stuck in finder mode. If I let it sit for a few minutes, then turn it off and on, it will function normally for a while and then the problem returns. This is really annoying.
I reset the camera to factory setting but the problem remains. I need to investigate further.
When I reset the camera I forgot that the date and time information would be set to a factory default date and time.

Why it Works: Normally, you’d walk away from this shot, but the late evening sky was just too bold to ignore. The fires that year in the Bob Marshall Wilderness had made sunsets wicked. Problem was there was not clear view of the lake in the time I had. So I chose to use the trees to frame the shot. Then it was just a matter of finding something with the right ‘frame.’ Reference number: MT_0709_101
I love how the shadow of the bed mimics the light pouring in through the skylight... stacked triangles... My corners are very weak which surprised me but I am probably at f/2.8 in this shot and focused on infinity. Still they are so soft it bothers me. I've shot with this 24/2.8 AI'd quite a bit and never noticed the corners like this so I'll have to do some experiments in order to predict when exactly I'll see this again.

It's always difficult to predict when it starts raining. I was finishing making our lunch when I realised that it was the best moment to take some pictures for my course. I couldn't miss this rain, so I asked my DH to dish up and run upstairs to get my camera and some shots. I had a few ideas in my mind. This picture was one of the last. I was trying to see if I can take anything suitable that day. I focused on the rain drops and left the building out of focus.
Hope I can finish my blog entry tomorrow night. My blog is here.

Sugar seems to have developed a reputation as the big bad wolf in relation to health. We have reported on numerous studies associating sugar intake with increased aging, cardiovascular disease, obesity and even cancer. Such research has led to many health experts around the globe calling for reductions in recommended sugar intake, with some saying we should cut out sugar completely. But is it really that bad for our health?
“sugar is a crystalline carbohydrate that makes foods taste sweet”
There are many different types, including glucose, fructose, lactose, maltose and sucrose. Some of these sugars, such as glucose, fructose and lactose, occur naturally in fruits, vegetables and other foods. But many of the foods we consume contain “added” sugars – sugar that we add to a product ourselves to enhance the flavor or sugar that has been added to a product by a manufacturer.
Healty Low Sugar Shake
The most common sources of added sugars include soft drinks, cakes, pies, chocolate, fruit drinks and desserts. Just a single can of cola can contain up to 7 tsps of added sugar, while an average-sized chocolate bar can contain up to 6 tsps.
It is added sugars that have been cited as a contributor to many health problems. In December 2014, MNT reported on a study in the journal Open Heart claiming added sugars may increase the risk of high blood pressure, even more so than sodium. And in February 2014, a study led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) associated high added sugar intake with increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD).
“Perhaps most strongly, added sugars have been associated with the significant increase in obesity”
In the US, more than a third of adults are obese, while the rate of childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents over the past 30 years.
A 2013 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggested that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages increases weight gain in both children and adults, while a review paper from the World Health Organization (WHO) notes an increase in the consumption of such beverages correlates with the increase in obesity.
Are we becoming addicted to sugar?
High Sugar Chocolate Cookies
In support of these associations is Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California-San Francisco and author of the book Fat Chance: The Hidden Truth About Sugar, who claims sugar is a “toxic” substance that we are becoming addicted to.
A 2008 study by researchers from Princeton University, NJ, found rats used to consuming a high-sugar diet displayed signs of binging, craving and withdrawal when their sugar intake was reduced.
A woman tempted by chocolate
Dr. Lustig: “We need to wean ourselves off. We need to de-sweeten our lives. We need to make sugar a treat, not a diet staple.”We need to wean ourselves off. We need to de-sweeten our lives.”
“We need to make sugar a treat, not a diet staple”
Dr. Lustig told The Guardian in 2013. “The food industry has made it into a diet staple because they know when they do you buy more,” he added. “This is their hook. If some unscrupulous cereal manufacturer went out and laced your breakfast cereal with morphine to get you to buy more, what would you think of that? They do it with sugar instead.”
In her popular blog, Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow cites sugar addiction as one of the reasons she decided to quit sugar completely.
“The bottom line is that sugar works the addiction and reward pathways in the brain in much the same way as many illegal drugs,” she writes. “Sugar is basically a socially acceptable, legal, recreational drug with deadly consequences.”
Bowl of Cereal and Forrest Fruits
Statistics show that we are certainly a nation of added-sugar lovers. According to a report from the CDC, adults in the US consumed around 13% of their total daily calorie intake from added sugars between 2005-2010, while 16% of children’s and adolescents’ total calorie intake came from added sugars between 2005-2008.
These levels are well above those currently recommended by WHO, which state we should consume no more than 10% of total daily calories from “free” sugars – both naturally occurring sugars and those that are added to products by the manufacturer.
In 2013, however, MNT reported on a study by Prof. Wayne Potts and colleagues from the University of Utah, claiming that even consuming added sugars at recommended levels may be harmful to health, after finding that such levels reduced lifespan in mice.
Is eliminating sugar from our diet THE healthy THING TO DO?
Healthy Low Carb Diet
The array of studies reporting the negative implications of added sugar led to WHO making a proposal to revise their added sugar recommendations in 2014. The organization issued a draft guideline stating they would like to halve their recommended daily free sugar intake from 10% to 5%.
“The objective of this guideline is to provide recommendations on the consumption of free sugars to reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases in adults and children,” WHO explained, “with a particular focus on the prevention and control of weight gain and dental caries.”
In addition, it seems many health experts, nutritionists and even celebrities like Gwyneth have jumped on a “no sugar” bandwagon.
But is it even possible to completely eliminate sugar from a diet? And is it safe? Biochemist Leah Fitzsimmons, of the University of Birmingham in the UK, told The Daily Mail:
“Cutting all sugar from your diet would be very difficult to achieve. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products and dairy replacements, eggs, alcohol and nuts all contain sugar, which would leave you with little other than meat and fats to eat – definitely not very healthy.”
Many people turn to artificial sweeteners as a sugar alternative, but according to studies, these sweeteners may still drive diabetes and obesity.
“Together with other major shifts that occurred in human nutrition, this increase in artificial sweetener consumption coincides with the dramatic increase in the obesity and diabetes epidemics,” the authors note. “Our findings suggest that artificial sweeteners may have directly contributed to enhancing the exact epidemic that they themselves were intended to fight.”

As we saw before, I can't instantly change speed, but the actual and predicted graphs are very similar
The album art is from the late-80's release by the legendary Steve Taylor. Hat tip to sockheaven.net
I vividly remember introducing myself to Steve Taylor on December 31, 1989 at Davis-Kidd Bookstore in Nashville - just one day before the 1990 he predicted (with stunning accuracy - haha). That was my senior year in high school. I ran into him a few other times in the next few years, enjoyed each time (only one of those times actually speaking to him), and I still hold out hope that he'll teach a lyric writing class in Nashville before one of us moves away.
This cover was the subject of great hand-wringing in some Christian circles. I have come to learn in other contexts how vocal a small number of people can be.
With Annual Leave required to be used by the end of the year I found myself off for a week before the kids holidays! Mountains I thought, the long range forecasts had predicted a likelihood of high pressure on the build up to Christmas – excellent – or so I thought. With this being Scotland the models soon changed and the predicted high pressure was now due to move away from Tuesday introducing some spicy low pressure systems to rattle Scotland and the North West! Plans changed, up until Tuesday the forecast was ok – quite benign weather albeit mild and a little muggy….
The chance of cloud free Munros was around 20% with summit winds of around 20-30mph- time to bag some Corbetts…
A few years prior I had headed to the three Munros to the north of Glen Dessary with a summit camp on Garbh Chioch Mor, my only previous visit along Loch Arkaig. I had looked at the Corbetts here a few times but never ended up hiking in the location. With the winds a little high on the tops I decided I would look at a road/loch side camp and use this as a base for a couple of days hiking.
05.30am and I was up – the alarm wasn’t set until 06.50 but as is often the case I woke and thought I’d get going. The route I had planned would mean a possible decent in darkness so I was glad of the earlier start! 2.5 hrs later and I was happy to see my researched camp spot had no campers – maybe not a surprise given it’s the middle of December! I parked up and stuck the tent up and was away by 09.45am. After the warmth of the car I was taking my time up the hill. The forecast suggested the clag may move later in the day and so I headed straight from the camp site up the southern slopes of Mhurlagain. I soon hit the clag and got progressively damper in the fine Scottish mizzle! Once on the ridge the walking was relatively easy going albeit a little squidgy.
1 hour and 45 minutes later I was on the summit looking at the grey inside view of a cloud. The only wind was really on the summit but I didn’t hang around as I was aware the sunset was about 15.30. Compass out and I was off descending towards the bealach between the two hills. It didn’t take long to reach it and my expected views never materialised, the clag had dropped and the little rain continued. Up to Fraoch Bheinn and the microspikes came on and steep ground crossed as I made a bee line for the summit not wanting to waste time. I sat on the summit and I could have been on Mhurlagain again, the views identical- The Grey! Off again and I decided my ascent route was a little too steep for a descent so I headed down the southern ridge a distance before tracking south east towards the lochside camp.
At around 350metres the views returned as I ducked under the cloud, always a nice feeling- the light rain wasn’t however!
With microspikes doing their job perfectly I was back at camp for around 14.30.
Although wild camping is usually the preference, this road side camping has its advantages. 10 minutes after arriving I was out of my damp (read soaked to the skin) clothes and warming nicely in the car. The hassle of inflating the ground mat was a joy in comparison to summit camps and tea and coffee were made in a leisurely manner!
A few hours were spent in the warmth of the car reading maps and routes for tomorrows adventure – a hike up The Corbett Sgurr Cos na Breacgd-laoidh. Hopefully the weather gods smile and I get some views tomorrow…
Sgurr Cos na Breachd-laoigh
Nearly 12 hours kip- unheard of in all my days sleeping in a tent, but head was down at 19.00hrs and I didn’t rise until 07.30 the next morning! Could have been the comfy pillow I brought and dry set of clothes – an advantage of road side camping as opposed to wild camping maybe? Anyway, even though I had a long lye, it was still very dark when I emerged from the tent. I soon set about taking it down and headed to the car to get a brew on and get ready for the day ahead.
The weather was worse than yesterday with rain falling and the clag right down, so I decided to get the waterproofs on from the start. A short drive up to the new ? car park at the end of the road and I was soon on my way, tucking in right and heading down the beautiful and remote feeling Glen Dessary. The mood was atmospheric with low cloud and mists hugging the hillside and deer appearing here there and everywhere? Not sure they would have been so brave a few months ago!;)
My marker for the hill was the amazing Dessary Lodge. Now this really was a 007 style house and reminded me of the one that was blown to pieces in the recent film.
Onwards I headed up trackless terrain – the rain still falling but the grey atmosphere did stir te Scottishness inside! Again, as on the previous day, I was soon inside the cloud but today the wind was stronger and rain heavier, but the Goretex was doing a grand job. A few ups , and then a few false summits, but I finally reached the top, confirmed with a quick ViewRanger check. It wasn’t weather for hanging around so turned on mu heals after taking a bearing- ten came back down he way I came, sticking to the western side of the ridge to take in the sketchy views in to upper Glen Dessary….
Then , about 40 minutes after leaving the top, the rain stopped, cloud lifted and sun came out! The views were amazing, my only regret was that I hadn’t been an hour or so behind schedule! With a extra bit of energy the blue skies brought I was soon tracking back down Glen Dessary , and then finally back at the car ready for the long drive home. A fine way to spend two das
