Mist rises from the Frenchman River just before sunrise. The stillness and quiet of morning was broken only by birdsong - that's a Red-winged Blackbird in the branch just left of centre - and distant coyotes yipping. I walked through dew-laden grass, getting soaked from my knees down, a minor inconvenience on a summer morning, more than balanced by the sheer pleasure of being alive in this place, at this time. Two or three times, Sharp-tailed Grouse flushed from nearly underfoot when I wandered too close, oblivious. A muskrat paddled by close to shore, silent, before diving and disappearing. There are always a few tourists in the park on summer days, but the vast majority do not rouse from their sleeping bags and RVs until 8 or 9 a.m., so once again I had the good light all to myself. On days when I manage to haul my butt out of bed in the dark and get to a good location before sunrise, this is absolutely my favourite time: the moment before the world is born.

I carried a tripod. I don't use it as often as I used to, but at dawn and dusk it allows me to shoot at low ISO settings (for minimal noise) and use any combination of shutter speed and aperture I choose, without having to compromise. And, unlike wildlife and wildflower photography, shooting landscape allows me to remain upright. Standing, not slithering - a refreshing change of pace!

The scenic karst mountains are silhouetted by the pre-dawn blue hour light where the Li River passes through the city of Yangshuo in Guangxi Province, China. In this long exposure the mountains and city lights are reflected in the river and the tour boats line up along the river bank waiting for the daytime tourist activity.

A two shot panorama of the inversion that covered a lot of the Peak District a couple of weeks ago.

I think it would have been great to stay here until the sun rose and lit up fog. But I pressed on with my walk.

PREDAWN COMPOSITE/GRUMPY OLD MAN

Wokeup too early this morning and since I couldn't fall back to sleep I went out at 3am to do some nightscapes. Found this eerie stump at Red Rock and lit it from the side. I shot the moon 5mins. later and just put them together. The Vegas citylights creeps in from the right.

A buck comes out of the fog towards me about 20 minutes before sunrise.

Watching the predawn twilight, a pair of Hawaiian monk seals (Neomonachus schauinslandi) emerge from the ocean, galumphing up the beach toward me. The Hawaiian name is "ilio holo i ka uaua" meaning "dog that runs in rough water." These endangered pinnipeds are among the rarest marine mammals.

Overnight the high winds and storm waves washed large hunks of crystal and blue ice up onto Diamond Beach and made a cool pre-dawn photo as the sun started to lighten the horizon with pink, Jökulsárlón, Iceland. The water spray made an interesting reversed comma shape.

05:05 in the morning... more 'Beauty in the City' series

Hello my friends!

I think this is the fastest I've ever uploaded another photo after my previous one : D

Trying to catch up while I have some extra time at the moment : )

I did go out shooting today... but this pic is actually from last July.

As you can see, my focus was on the 'Big Rock' originally... then I decided to pan over & add some of the cityscape, which showed a bit of mist over that morning water.

This worked out nicely, as I ended up catching some sky reflections as well : )

Something I love about this time of year is the bright green moss that shows up on the rocks & wood.

Looks so vibrant & beautiful against many of the other earth tones : )

Both the shoreline & big rock slope toward the sea in this area... and they can give you a sense of unbalanced-ness when photographing here.

Especially good to remember when shooting so close to the water, as the mossy rocks are extremely slippery!

(( trust me, I know from experience ))

...blah, blah, blah more:

In my first attempt at this shot, I had left my large shoulder bag on one of the smaller rocks (sitting next to the big rock)

and so I had to go back and remove the bag.

Since I didn't use a tripod and captured the first attempt free-handed, I tried composing it exactly the same way again.

I didn't succeed, but I did like the way this 2nd shot turned out anyhow.

This is definitely not my usual type of composition... as one side is extremely busy & condensed, while the other is wide open.

But I loved the contrast I saw afterward... the huge difference between 'up-close nature' & 'distant cityscape'.

So this is the one I'm going with today : )

p.s. This was another very early morning shot where I probably left my house around 03:00 in the morning (night) to get there and setup for some predawn shots... and stuck around for the pretty sunrise as well : )

I do enjoy it!

I hope you guys find something interesting or enjoyable here...

Appreciate your support as always my friends : )

Have a very wonderful day! ☺☺☺

CRUSH

Pre-dawn silence, frozen breath hanging in the air, eyes straining in the darkness to see a shape that does not belong, finally landing on the magical Gray Gray Owl perched at the edge of the woods.

You can see fog in the valley between here and the Rocky Mountains.

Feeling the stillness in predawn while watching fog stream engulfing our valley is a blessing experience.

I had plan to drive 1 hour to shoot moonset in San Francisco bay. Before embarking on the journey, the unusual heavy moisture at local caught my attention and changed my plan. So I played with fog and light in my home valley instead. I know this heavy fog could be a rare photography opportunity and can only last before sunrise, so I scrambled all possible locations in mind for a vantage point that could yield a composition I like. Here is a mesmerizing one exuding surreal and tranquil mood in morning light.

Did several pano shots also. Stay tune for much goodness.

Red and pink tones usually remind us of warmth, love, and friendship...

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket — safe, dark, motionless, airless — it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable."

I took a series of images in the pre-dawn sky on June 25, hoping to capture the planet Mercury with the moon and Venus. But alas it was too close to the sun and obscured in the sun's glare and hazy clouds. But I was rewarded with this image, even as a couple fishermen drifted by.

The waning crescent moon, with strong earthshine, is at upper right, with Venus to its lower left.

Around the corner from St Mark's Square lies Palazzo Ducale. A gorgeous corner section that houses the beautiful and graceful iconic street lights and the ornate architecture of the Doge's Palace.

According to www.palazzoducale.visitmuve.it, The Doge's Palace is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and an impressive structure composed of layers of building elements and ornamentation, from its 14th and 15th century original foundations to the significant Renaissance and opulent Mannerist adjunctions. The structure is made up of three large blocks, incorporating previous constructions. The wing towards the St. Mark’s Basin is the oldest, rebuilt from 1340 onwards. The wing towards St. Mark’s Square was built in its present form from 1424 onwards. The canal-side wing, housing the Doge’s apartments and many government offices, dates from the Renaissance and was built between 1483 and 1565.

All that interested me though was composing an image before sunrise and capturing the scene in a state of peacefulness and serenity. I do love venturing out into busy cities throughout the night and seeing it in a way that few visitors do.

Help/Advice Requested:

I recently discovered, by chance, that one photograph from my 2013 US trip has been used by a travel/online website without my permission/approval. They credited the photograph to me but did not contact me to inform me of this. I do not wish to encourage or promote such behavior by ignoring it. Yet, I am unsure about feasible, realistic options. I'd like to weigh the pros and cons of various options before deciding if any action should be taken. If you have any advice on what a photographer can do in such a situation and/or what the feasible options are, I'd like to hear from you. Please contact me outside of Flickr, via email at: rp_ang@yahoo.com

Predawn light, Osage County Oklahoma

Some wonderful colour in the pre-sunrise skies this morning. Taken from down near shot rock near Easington.

Taken on my ride at sunrise. I caught the first rays of light hitting the masts and the lighthouse at Hillarys Boat Harbor. The masts and lighthouse glittered like gold in these early morning rays. As the season wears on the sun starts to rise a little later each day. Soon my ride will coincide with the predawn light.

The views from the house are pretty amazing. The sky is extremely dynamic, constantly changing. Being in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains means we can see the weather everyone else is getting on Whidbey Island, the San Juans and off East towards Bellingham and the Cascades. Sunny Sequim!

Patagonia has some wonderful skies with the frequent appearance of alpenglow and lots of wind-blown cloud formations. But you have to get up early to capture the pre-dawn show and the alpenglow as it hits the mountains. Also good is to find the pre-dawn red sky reflected in a local lake or pond.
