Struggling to sleep again, I went downstairs for a drink and fresh air at 4am to be greeted by a fantastic display of noctilucent cloud, very late in the season for such an awesome display and lucky to see.

The rising and setting sun provides a warm glow to the skies and clouds; however, the opposite horizon is often over looked. As earths shadow recedes during sunrise (or advances at sunset), a band of soft pink pastels forms above it - know as the Belt of Venus.

Above, the Fort Lauderdale, FL skyline was imaged about 10mins before sunrise.

Still 20-minutes before sunrise and already this celestial display of colours is a promising sign... or is it? As the weather lore goes, "Red sky in the morning, shepherds' warning"!

Thank you for brightening my days with your beautiful images, kind comments and valued friendships. You are the gift that keeps on giving. Much appreciated!

I frequently stop here on my morning ride. Its always beautiful. The Breakwater Bar at Hillarys Marina

Caressing each other with voices

barely audible in the predawn hour,

Watch with your eyes closed,

And you will see hundreds more times…

When approaching, do not touch

With a timid hand to the deity…

Go away – and only then wake up,

And also dreaming in reality....

Caught this this morning on my morning bike ride. It was calm and moody

A hike down into Linville Gorge in the predawn blackness of Western North Carolina, and the forecast for a chilly 15 degrees F had those little voices picking away at the back of my mind and the aches and pains of lugging my pack from a previous shooting location earlier in the night chipping away at my bones. But the thunderous sound of the falls swollen from the heavy rains earlier in the week was the siren call that beckoned me onward. My reward was the blessed solitude from the less fanatical as the thoughts of everything else emptied from my mind in front of this amazing view. Warmed by my decent, the only reminder of the cold were from the puffs of condensation from my breath that seemed to mimic what was coming from the falls. Time slowed and the only distant thought was of the soon to be rising sun as I clicked on different lenses. Reminiscent of trying on final selections of nice clothing, each presented it's own special look. 24mm, 50mm, 70mm. Being the sucker that I am for shooting wide, I went with the 24mm here and cropped to a little wider the the 50mm offered.

Predawn shot of the lighthouse at Hillarys Marina. It is amazing to watch the light, colours and hues change in a short space of time.

Hey everyone! I hope your weekend has been a great one! I discovered several years back that there is only one morning during each monthly lunar cycle when a photo op of the combination of the moon and predawn color can coincide closely...the last day before the new moon, when the moon rises an hour before sunrise. The moon can be seen well above sunrise earlier in this cycle, but I like how the thin sliver of crescent moon seems to float on the predawn glow! I've seldom caught this composition, as it usually occurs during the workweek or on cloudy or rainy mornings...so when all the conditions were perfect this morning, I rousted out of bed at 3 am, got ready and made the run over to Big Lagoon to get set up before the moon began to rise! It was cold, but so peaceful in the predawn dark, and a great chance to do some stargazing!

I like the lines of this Yacht (Juliana). The light was just right this morning at sunrise to capture her lines.. Taken at Hillarys Boat Harbour in predawn light.

Another angle at the abandoned petrol station at Ocean Reef. This was taken with morning light. I went there predawn with tripod and flash units in my bike backpack but found many fo the "keepers" were hand held shots taken with the early morning light. The colours are just stunning. A b/w version of an earlier post of a predawn shot at BC's Emerald Lake. Thought it worked OK in mono as well.

Thanks for taking a look! Always appreciated!

Hope your week is off to a wonderful start.

I love the shape of this little rock. So much so in fact, that I photographed it again in similar conditions this year.

First shot of the morning, so dark a torch was required to set the aperture. Wild reciprocity failure shows in the colours, green-shift from the Portra chemistry, cooling of the edges due to the large format lens. Clouds painted pink and smeared over 10 minutes.

Last shot for a week or so, will be diving on the outer reef. Hopefully some underwater film to show when I return. Look forward to catching up then. Meantime let me convey my sincere thanks for the support and friendship of this community over the last few years. The world has changed, but there remains good people. My thanks to you all

Preceding the Nikonos Water series on the same day, predawn on the 6x12. Illusion of long exposure calms the storm swell on the image. Had opened the shutter for this shot when a rogue wave broke over the rock shelf, camera and tripod lifted overhead out of the water, then replaced on the ground. Exposure time extended a bit to wash out the first few seconds, but the dark rocks still show some spectral sloshes of foam, a reminder that the morning was not so calm. And that film is pretty forgiving. But the ocean is not.

i love the predawn moments ... and i love the shining of the upcoming light... the beauty of the light may give us peaceful moments - just before the day starts

Moon Phase Today: December 31, 2021

The Moon's current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you're willing to get up early. [I did ☺].

The Hillarys Marina in predawn light.

I've not had much chance to get out lately and so I'm trying to catch up on images not posted from the past spring and summer.

This is one of the Moulton Barns on Mormon Row near Grand Teton National Park. The tones are pushed to get a bit of contrast in this predawn shot.
