Kate and I leave for vacation in the morning. Going through the lists and packing my briefcase...

I was working on some stuff, and finally cleaned up my desk, and found my xbox box propped my laptop up to a more reasonable level relative the 17" CRT, woohoo.

This is the first computer that was mine, as opposed to a family computer. I painted everything, including the tops of the keys. (+stickers!)

A classic from '03 (stating this up front just in case someone claims this is old news, since, you know, it is). The baked PowerBook. A lady brought it in to the repair shop I worked at claiming she stuck the machine in the oven for 20 minutes to dry it off after she spilled water on it. It still worked.

The display was obviously warped, and the keys melted, but pretty much everything else worked. An external display worked as expected. Airport, USB, FW, and optical drive worked as well.

The FreeBSD, the ibook (mine) and the powerbook. With my Rubik's cube. Although when I left it yesterday, it was completed. Hmm.

This is a photo I took of my Powerbook 2400c. It is a classic lightweight Apple laptop circa 1998.

I still own this little beauty. Yes, it still works flawlessly.

This is where I spend a lot of time, working or playing on the computer, scanning photographs, etc.

Here is my husband holding the top case and showing the size of the temp sensor. Redonk small.

My Powerbook was narcoleptic, it had a faulty temperature sensor which told the powerbook that it was basically on fire, when in fact it was not. This caused an emergency sleep whenever it damn well felt like it. Very annoying and very hard to work with! So after two years of research and $25 of screwdrivers I cut the damn thing out. Here are pictures that I hope will help others having the same problem as the below links did for me! I used cuticle nippers to cut the connecting legs of the sensor off the ribbon it was soldered on to.

A note to anyone else who decides on the cuticle clippers, make sure you cut the legs really far down close to the ribbon - I had some errant legs that shorted out the computer a bit and it wouldn’t boot, even when they were covered with lots of tape. I think they may have been touching under the tape which would explain it, but I can’t confirm since I don’t see that well! Trimmed down and retaped and everything is working great, knock on wood!

I attempted the surgery after reading the following experiences - I owe all of them enormous thanks!

Apple 12” Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, with wi-fi, combo drive and in superb condition!

This is an Apple Powerbook G4 laptop; it is the last generation Powerbook in the ultra portable 12” line. This is still the smallest Apple laptop available, in terms of length and width (the Macbook Air is obviously the thinnest laptop). The PowerPc processors are well known for their stability and reliability.

I have taken very, very good care of this laptop and it clearly shows. It’s in outstanding condition cosmetically, you would have a hard time finding one this nice shirt of getting “new old stock” and I have no idea where you would even find one.

This little guy packs big power with a 1.5 GHz processor and upgraded 1.25 GB of RAM, has a 60GB SATA hard drive, combo drive and of course airport wireless. In the included pictures you can see the specs in “about this mac” window. If you need more pictures, please send me an email, or come see it. It will come with OSX Tiger installed; you will get the installation software.

I have run all of the Techtool diagnostics and everything is perfect running order. No problems, works like a champ. This was my tool of choice for traveling, as it is so small, but has enough power running all my graphics programs.

The only reason I’m selling it is because I'm moving obviously and I need to downsize, I currently have 2 laptops and I foresee this not being used much at all.

You can see complete specs for the last generation 12” PowerBook at everymac:

The only “negative” thing I can note about this laptop is that the battery has cycles on it; this is a 3 year-old machine after all. So, you might want to replace it depending on what you plan on using it for. If you plan on using it in locations with no AC source for extended periods of time, I would suggest getting a new battery. However, I’ve never really had a problem with this. To offset this, there is an additional power supply I’ll include in the auction. I kept one at the office and home for convenience; this is a $50+ value. You will also get a RadTech sleeve, and a screen protector. This is another $50 value. They are wonderful because they protect the screen from the keyboard when closed, and the outside from cosmetic wear.

Looking for $550.

The Day of the Powerbook.

Sitting on an iBook G4...

Found this little guy sitting in the IT office. I can't possibly imagine what they plan to use it for. Maybe they're going to give it to one of the Sports reporters. It'll be an amusing form of punishment.

It's been a long time coming, but I finally have something to replace the aging powerbook.

Just goes to show you how important it is to test something out long-term. I thought these internally-illuminated keycaps where the bee's knees in the cat's pajamas when they first came out. But to be honest, I can't remember any time when I actually used it. On any average notebook, if the screen's lit there's enough of a wash on the keyboard for easy typing.

Got my hands on a "new" old iBook G3 600mhz. I'll be putting Debian on it to replace my aging white box Linux server. Of course, I'll still have OSX on my PowerBook.

Todays Picture of the Day title is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I shoot all of my pictures in RAW format. I then import them to my laptop and run them through, Aperture, a RAW processing application. For those of you who don't know what that is, its to digital SLRs as a darkroom is to film. All that I do with most of my images is adjust the colors and contrast until the pictures look how I want them. I usually don't do any touchups or alterations to the images. They are pretty much what the camera saw when I clicked the shutter button. Nearly all of the pictures I take, are run through photoshop only to add my watermark.

This picture shows what I see while editing my images. I used to run all of my pictures through Photoshop, until Adobe released Lightroom. Around the same time, Apple released Aperture and I really wanted to try it out, but I was running an older G4 at the time, my machine could not run Aperture. Adobe had Lightroom in a free beta, so I installed it and started learning. After the beta trial ran out, I decided that I liked the workflow so much that I bought it. About 10,000 pictures later, I bought a MacBook Pro. It came with a trial of Aperture 1.5 (I think). I used it but wasn't really impressed, so I kept on working in Lightroom. In February, Apple released Aperture 2 to much fanfair. It seemed that Apple had redone a LOT of the application and a lot of reviewers were touting many of the features to be top notch. They were offering a 30 day trial and I had a wedding coming up so I decided to give Aperture 2 a trial by fire(actually the same way I learned Lightroom). When I finished the wedding shots in half the time as it took me in Lightroom AND the pictures were just as good if not better than the output from Lightroom, I decided to move over to Aperture.

I bought the laptop because I needed a newer machine that I could take with me and actually do some graphics work on (unlike the 12" PowerBook G4 it replaced). I never meant for it to become my main machine. It isn't really great for working on the amount of pictures that I take, but it gets the job done. I can't wait until I can afford to buy a MacPro and a pair of 24" LCDs. Then I will probably be able to shave off another 15-20% of the time it takes sorting and editing the pictures. I think that being forced to sit down in front of a pair of big screens will help cut down on distractions, not having to hide what I am working when someone sends me an IM, and getting sidetracked.

Wow I wrote a lot tonight. I have no clue why I just went on like that but I guess since its a pretty boring picture, I need to justify it by going ON and ON about stuff most of you won't even read. Hey if you have read this far, put a comment on the picture so I won't feel like a complete loser for having wasted about 20 mins writing all of this crap.

Anyways, thanks for hanging in with me this long, and thanks for viewing my Picture of the Day. Thanks for all of the great feedback I have been getting from you all!

Don't forget, I am available for hire...I do portraits, weddings, events, shows, pretty much anything that you want!
