How long has it been since I last stopped to appreciate the patterns and details of nature? A positive aspect in the crisis of COVID-19, if nothing else, is that the situation forced me to slow down my pace, pay more attention to my life, rediscover myself, and reconnect to the nature.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.
“A concise poem about our work as stated elow
A place without being
a thought without thinking
creatively, two dimensions
suspended animation
possibly a perfect imitation
of what was then to see.
A frozen memory in synthetic colour
or black and white instead,
fantasy dreams in magazines
become imbedded inside my head.
Artistic views
surrealistic hues,
a photographer’s instinctive eye:
for he does as he pleases
up to that point he releases,
then develops a visual high.

a series I did for my Problem Solving Final that deals with my daily effort to stay positive about my body.
This is a direct positive cyanotype photogram. My evolving chemistry for this process is as follows:
-Part A: Dissolve 36g of Ferric Ammonium Citrate in 100ml of distilled water.
-Part B: Dissolve 16g of Potassium Ferrocyanide in 100ml distilled water. That's Ferrocyanide with an 'O' not the usual Ferricyanide with an 'I.'
-Mix A and B in equal proportions and brush copiously on good paper. I used a combined volume of 8ml on one 8x10 sheet of Bergger Cot 320.
-Let dry and then store in the dark for 2 months or more. I know that seems weird, but if it's used right away, it forms a negative. More experimentation is needed with this aspect of the process. Chemists, please comment.
-Expose as usual. It is rather fast compared to regular cyanotype.
-Rinse under a fairly strong stream of water such as a kitchen faucet.
-Let soak in distilled water for a few minutes. Do not treat with peroxide.
Enjoy and scan while you can because after about 30 minutes the image begins to reverse. In this example, the dark blue background was much paler to begin with. After about 3 hours the background became deep violet, almost black and the lighter cyan tones became almost invisible. Comments please.
One positive trend coming out of the pandemic is how many new people have discovered spending time in the outdoors as a getaway. Camping numbers are way up! And while that means demand is up too, the outdoors are big and I’m sure there’s room for all of us. Getting back to nature has so many wonderful benefits. This shot is from one of my family’s COVID camping trips.

Negative: Pelegry process. Canson marker paper. Developed in gallic acid. Waxed.
Positive: Salt print on Arches Platine 310g paper. Iodized (floated) with ammonium chloride/sodium citrate/gelatin.
I'm having problems getting good iodizer when floated for the salt print. Resulting in weak contrast, but this one it seemed to work for the image. The problem in these dry winter days is with excessive curling of the paper when floated so its hard to get an even coating. Does anyone have a trick to help? Thanks.

Welcome to Indonesia, welcome to Bandanaira.
I have returned from a two month journey through Indonesia and will now slowly start to publish some of the photos here.
Though many of us consider wildfires to be adverse, the positive impact on the environment cannot be over looked. Among other things, wildfires result in removal of old growth that can choke out desirable trees. During a wildfire, nutrients are released into the soil by burning dead or decaying matter. In turn, the added nutrients results in productive new plant growth.
However, statistics show that four out of five wildfires are started by humans. I think it is best to let Mother Nature determine its own course in this matter.
The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.”

Ilford XP2 Super 400 (120) B&W film, cross processed in E6 chemistry (normally C-41 process).
Rated at 400 ISO then pushed by 1 stop in processing.
Not sure what the red colouring in some frames is caused by - light leak maybe?...not sure. The blue cast is from the anti-halation layer, i think? (The water from after the pre-development soak was blue-green).
Processed at home with Tetenal E6 kit.
