Missing being able to go on photography walks with friends at the moment. Just 5 more days of isolation to go hopefully!

Not one for everyone, but trying to find something a bit different at Cardiff Central this tele-view captures the 7.05pm Westerleigh Murco - Robertson Sidings empty petroleum tankers (6B47) disappearing away from the Welsh capital and heading west to Pembrokeshire for another refill.

DB Cargo 'Sheds' 66034 and 66176 are doing the honours and don't look like they are sparing the horses either as they catch a bit of sundown glint.

On the left is the once sizeable Cardiff Canton depot (86A), back in the 1970s home to numerous class 37s on coal-traffic duties from the Valleys, as well as visiting locomotives from other regions. Nowadays it's perhaps even busier, but this time mostly with Transport for Wales's DMUs engaged in the more intensive schedules now operating in these parts. It still sees a bit of locomotive activity however looking after the small fleet of TfW class 67 'Skip' units used on their longer distance passenger services. In this shot a couple of class 231s can be seen, and a class 197, which I believe to be 197019.

I was taken by the way the rampant purple-flowering weed growing in the permanent way was capturing the last of the sun's rays. Sadly I haven't been able to get a positive ID on it.

When I begun to process this exposure bracketing, I thought that I knew what I wanted to attain. I was perfectly wrong. Indeed, these RAW files kept a few secret bits of beauty which I was not aware of when I selected them for processing – and they changed the course of the journey I had foreordained.

I was in a gloomy mood, for both personal and general concerns, and the RAWs looked rather duller than the average – taken: they appeared to accurately mirror the state of my soul. At worst, I would have wasted some hours of pointless procesing work before deciding to look for something better. Nobody would have known. However things were to contradict my expectations. I got some good news (a rarity in those tough days) about the health conditions of my brother and my “adopted brother-in-law” (i.e. my brother’s brother-in-law); on the other hand, Darktable – that wonderful software – gifted me with a few unanticipated treasures. My thoughts were growing more and more positive and the processing of this bracketing were proceeding accordingly: a hidden beauty was unfolding before me, my own persisting unawareness of it notwithstanding. At last I found myself with a picture that had apparently self-processed itself*, while I was busy exploring uncharted thoughts that kept emerging along the way

* Admittedly a bizarre phenomenon, which Maurits Cornelius Escher would have loved – think of his Drawing hands.

I would avoid to nag you about this incredibly wonderful location: you can take a look at my album Silent banks, the complete collection of the photos I have taken there; the attached narratives are rich in information about the place, if you are curious enough.

This location is especially renowned for its legendary morning mists, but only a thin layer of milky mist floated above the water that morning. On top of the hill in the distance, beyond the river, lays the sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca ( = Madonna of the Rock), already brushed by the first light pouring from the Eastern horizon.

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then, as usual, I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing. While this technique (which, its imposing name notwithstanding, is pretty simple to implement) often holds interesting results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. In this picture I have exploited this technique in a very frugal, yet effective, way – just some touches where needed.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable. Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by lightness).

I do not look at statistics all that often, but I did recently. I saw that just a couple weeks ago or so I had passed 3 million views. Which gave me pause for reflection. I first joined Flickr in 2007. I did not do anything with it for the first year, but as I started figuring out what it was about, I became more active. Since that time, I have shared 1000 photos.

I have enjoyed my interaction with other photographers from all over the world, loved seeing the world through their eyes. I have learned from their work and from their feedback. Awards groups, something not everyone loves, have functioned like small photo contests and have taught me a great deal. I have made friends with people I have never met in person. While not without its frustrations, Flickr has mostly been a positive experience for me, largely because of the photographers I have encountered and the work they have shared.

So thanks, all of you. Thanks for your interest in my work, your encouragement, and for sharing yourselves as you have courageously posted your own work for me to enjoy and learn from.

Here is another shot taken in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Native Americans know these mountains as a spiritually important place and I have to agree with them. I do not get out as much as I would like, but it restores me when I do. I appreciate having a place to share what I find there. Again, thanks to you all.

This weeks theme for the FFF+ Snap Happy group of 'Flowers' was chosen by Margaret.

FFF+ Snap Happy is a group I created for the FFF+ for images that reflect positivity, happiness, joy and beauty only. This must also be reflected in any titles, captions and comments.

- No mention of Coronavirus and no references to it either

- No negativity

- No references to the plight of the world or the situation we all find ourselves currently in

It would be appreciated if anyone commenting could also respect the group rules.

There is beauty everywhere, we just have to look :)

My first self-made tattoo^^

I admit it doesn't look perfect but it doesn't matter, I'm proud of it!

I paid attention to the symbols because that's the important thing.

Star, feather, butterfly, crescent, lotus flower and infinity, all symbols for positive dreams, worked into a dreamcatcher.

I will not give up on my dreams, no matter what happens

Ooooh. At least I woke! But with a headache and a sweaty fever again. I'm waiting for things to get better. Think I have some way to go according to this:

What are the stages and symptoms of COVID-19?

Day 1: The symptoms usually start with a fever, a dry cough and mild breathing issues which may get worse over the next week. You also may have symptoms of a sore throat, coughing up mucus, diarrhea, nausea, body aches and joint pain.

Day 7: Breathing may become difficult or laboured. This is called dyspnoea.

Day 9: Sepsis may start, this is the body's extreme response to an infection that can lead to organ failure or injury.

Day 10-12: People who have mild COVID-19 start to have an improvement in their fever and cough, but in serious cases their fever and cough continues.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) starts to be diagnosed, this is a respiratory problem when there is widespread inflammation in the lungs.

Day 12: This is the median day to be admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU).

Day 15: Acute kidney and cardiac injury becomes evident.

Day 18.5: The median time it takes from the first symptoms of COVID-19 to death is 18.5 days.

Day 22: This is the median amount of days it takes for COVID-19 survivors to be released from hospital

Not sure what day I'm on. Only got a first positive test result yesterday

I've been home from work for two weeks now, and I have joined the ranks of people that no longer know what day it is. I'm OK with that! For 4 + years I have worked every weekend... and now.... every day is a weekend!

I have started several projects, finished none. Today I decided to start cleaning the basement. Bad decision. I've been opening boxes and seeing stuff that I haven't seen for years... some I'm looking at and wondering why the heck I bothered to put it in a box and save it in the first place... and then there is the really cool stuff that I haven't seen in years... that I end up taking out and playing with. Yeah... it's not going well... it's not going well at all. But tomorrow is another day... and it's a "weekend"!

Aquí os dejo otra fotografía mas de esta preciosa mañana de otoño, espero que os guste y como siempre agradecer vuestras visitas y comentarios, feliz semana!

This is for my dear friend Melody who has been struggling with some health issues these past few weeks.

If you have a minute, stop by and wish her well. She will be having some hospital tests done on Friday and I'm trying to keep her in a positive frame of mind.

2024 has been a year....

It's been full of ups and many downs. My eyes have been opened up this past year majorly. Between grief, heartache, unnecessary drama, changes, losing myself....It's a year I am ready to put behind me!

I'm stepping into this new year with a new hope things will work out they way they are supposed too, a new mindset, possibly a bit guarded but getting myself back to me....I'm far from perfect but I am real and a damn good person. Going into this New Year with positive vibes that everything will be ok♥

Welcome every morning with a smile. Look on the new day as another special gift from your Creator, another golden opportunity to complete what you were unable to finish yesterday. Be a self-starter. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don't waste it with a false start or no start at all. Was feeling some good vibes today ♥

Enjoyed time spent with a friend at Juno Beach a few weeks ago, and happened to capture this story. The long shadow looks like it's reflecting some deep sad thoughts that extend way out. But when we're ready, all we have to do is look up.

It was cold! The two on the left are either running to stay warm or they are from Alaska. And in reality she wasn't sad.
