The Afsluitdijk provides a road link between the provinces of Friesland and North Holland. Since North Holland was part of Vesting Holland ("Fortress Holland"), the national redoubt of the Netherlands at the time, and control of the sluices in the Afsluitdijk was necessary for planned defensive inundations in case of a military invasion, Kornwerderzand was considered strategically important by the Dutch government. From 1931 onwards, fortifications consisting of seventeen casemates and three bunkers were constructed. The position was manned with approximately 220 troops in 1939.
During the German invasion of the Netherlands in World War II, the Kornwerderzand position was defended by Dutch troops. On May 13 and May 14, 1940, the fortifications were attacked by the German first Cavalry Division, while the Luftwaffe attacked supporting Dutch naval units. The German troops, initially lacking support by heavy artillery, were unable to take the position. The fortifications also withstood attacks by dive bombers. The next day the Dutch military in the Netherlands (except for the province of Zealand) surrendered, and the battle ended with the surrender of the position.
In 1943, the occupying German military improved the defenses by building three additional bunkers.
Nowadays, some of the fortifications can be visited as part of the Kazemattenmuseum ("casemate museum").

The Majestic Gern Church Berchtesgaden and Mount Watzmann.
The romantic Maria Gern Church, located in a exposed position north of Berchtesgaden , was an important pilgrimage church around 1600. Its interior is sumptuously decorated with stucco and frescoes showing a cycle from the life of the Virgin Mary. The central feature and attraction for pilgrims is the high altar (1715) with holy image (1666),
On the side of a huge square rock on Breakwater falls is this rock cap fern just clinging to life. It's only a couple inches wide. Check out that all the fronds are producing spores - I guess when under pressure, life goes all out!

We sure did get some dramatic skies at Point Reyes last weekend. This was definitely one of the best coastal sunsets I've seen; between the amazing colors and huge clouds we got some pretty epic skies!
It took me a while to decide on which shot to post from this viewpoint, as I took a ton of photos from this location while the sun was going down. I tried a few different processing techniques on the various shots but I think this one captured the drama the best. This is actually a blend of two exposures by hand in Photoshop. It was a lot of work but I think it came out really well.
Sweet ballerina feet from years ago. Ran across this image when I was cleaning up the art room again this morning. 💕💕💕Made my heart happy.

Rusty has 4 dog beds (can you say spoiled?) and he spit up on one of them which required cleaning. So I switched out his bed under my desk and he seems to be enjoying it more than the original.

The Gap and Watson Bay. The above photo was taken at the poit we can see the ocean on both sides, the Gap on the left and Watson bay on the right. The far right is central Sydney which a lot of buildings can be seen. No crop for this shot, this is the limit of my wide angle lens at 14 mm. I should have a fish-eye lens.:)

Technicians at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans moved the engine section of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the Moon, into position for the final join of the core stage Feb. 22. The engine section is the bottom-most portion of the 212-foot-tall core stage. It is the last of five major elements that is needed to connect the stage into one major structure. In addition to its miles of cabling and hundreds of sensors, the engine section is a crucial attachment point for the four RS-25 engines and two solid rocket boosters that produce a combined 8.8 million pounds of thrust at liftoff and flight. During launch and flight, liquid propellants from the liquid hydrogen tank and liquid oxygen tanks are delivered through the engine section to the four RS-25 engines. The engine section also includes the avionics that help steer the engines after liftoff.
Next, teams will join the engine section to the core stage for the second SLS rocket. After the join is complete, teams will begin to add each of the four RS-25 engines one by one to complete the stage. The completely assembled stage with its four RS-25 engines will be shipped to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida later this year. The SLS rocket is the only rocket capable of carrying astronauts in Orion around the Moon in a single mission.
