12 foto.

About the origins of this ancient name castle (Gualdum Captaneorum), the year of foundation in 975 by the Germanic count Edoardo Cattaneo is known. The town, thanks to its highly strategic geographical position, had, over the centuries, considerable importance. The cities of Foligno and Spoleto showed themselves, from time to time, interested in its conquest and fought over it, with ups and downs, among themselves. 12 photos.
Found this black-crowned night-heron getting into position for hunting in the marshy shallow water. They can be quite patient too, sometimes found hunched over in the same position for an extensive time while waiting on some type of aquatic delight. They will defend their "hunting grounds" or territory as well, should another opportunistic feeder come along.
What I find most fascinating about them is that quite striking red eye ... they simply grab my attention.
Happy Sunday everyone!

I looked at the weather forecast last night on my 'Clear Outside' weather app and the promise of mist until around 9am was predicted. I thought long and hard about where exactly I wanted to be and yet despite having shot Lake Bled on around five occasions recently, I really could not resist returning, not least because it's only a five minute drive for me.
However this morning I opted not to return to my usual vantage point, the wooden boardwalk, but to try and capture a selection of images that as others put it 'classic Nicholson'. So on arriving at the car park next to the campsite (3 EUR an hour, ouch), I wandered down to the wooden jetty opposite and set up the camera. There are a couple of beautiful, simple, wooden Pletna boats by the lakeside and so I started with them but noticed a couple of minutes later the rocks and wooden posts that line the edge of the walkway.
So I turned my attention to them while continuing to feature the iconic church island in the centre of the frame in the background. The mist was very prevalent which provided me with seemingly endless compositional possibilities. It is fair to say that I was in my element and I am never happier than when capturing images that are intrinsically mine in style.
The colour in the sky was subtle this morning but the church was visible for most of the time that I was there but I have a couple of images where it disappeared altogether. Once I had finished with this particular area, I drove up the road to another car park which allowed me a brisk ten minute walk down to the water's edge to photograph the island 'head on' as it was. The composition has the entrance to the island visible, along with the countless number of steps that take you up to the church but I shall share that another day.
To finish my morning's shoot, I took the steps to the Cafe Belvedere, which enjoys an elevated position over the lake and it gave me a lot of enjoyment watching life continuing below me. Pletna boats being powered by an electric motor around the lake, fishermen trying to land the odd fish or two in their small boats, and kayakers taking an early morning cruise around the island while ducks quacked, birds sang and life, in general, felt great. Oh, what a time to be out enjoying nature.
I hope that you enjoy the image. Feel FREE TO SHARE it if you wish

"Attempting to claim the treats" This is the first image in Robbie’s (Gray Squirrel) MI (mission impossible) series. I have to say, I wish I would have thought to switch to video mode. After this amusing encounter, I may have to change Robbie’s name to Tom Cruise.
As I was making the rounds to fill the bird feeders, Robbie was sneaking around in the foliage near the main feeder. He was following me but keeping his distance. I surprised him by placing some seeds and mealworms on a stone beneath the feeders. Although at first, he appeared to be slightly astonished by the gesture, it didn’t take him long to partake in the treats.
Meanwhile, the area where Robbie’s allotted amount of food is normally placed on the palm stump under oak one, habitat enhancements were underway. This was in order to give that feeding station a bit more character and stability. Actually, the entire area is getting a smidgen of a makeover so it will be more people-friendly for small gatherings.
Once the feeding station enhancements were completed, I set up the camera, placed some treats, and began to work on the trimming and relocating some of the plants in the area. I fully expected Marion (Female Northern Cardinal) to swoop in and grab the first bite. She generally keeps a watchful eye out for treats to be placed and usually beats everyone to the punch in this location. In other words, she’s not afraid of the clicking monster (me).
However, Marion and the rest of the gang stayed in the neighbor’s trees fussing at me for messing with the vegetation in the area. Apparently, they were extraordinarily displeased! I can only imagine what I believe to be modest revisions must look like an extreme transformation to them.
As I tended to the task at hand, I listened to the boisterous calls of my aggravated regulars. They seemed to be expressing their complete frustration and concerns about the activities at hand. Unhappy or not, their voices are still beautiful. Cranky cardinal, wren, tufted titmouse, and parula calls were carried far and wide. Not the bluebirds, they have not been visiting on a regular basis as of late.
Suddenly, I heard something rustling in the understory beside me. I looked to see Robbie slowly creeping across the ground towards the feeding station. He was checking out the changes and keeping an eye on me. Then with some impressive mission impossible style moves Robbie scampered to a tree stump that had been temporarily placed in the area.
He shimmied all around the stump while in the pancake position before moving on closer, closer, and ever closer towards the newly upgraded platform. Robbie had but one mission in mind, get those treats without being seen. Haha, I kept telling him I could see him but he totally ignored me and continued with his games. He would hide behind leaves, jump around, lay flat, and repeat.
But wait, what do I hear? By a shift in the sound of the bird's chatter, they were ready to forgive the intrusion and visit the yard for treats. Yes, the bird show was going to happen after all. The question became who shall complete the mission? Will Robbie be the first to get a treat or will Marion slip in and claim them for herself?
I hope you have a pleasant day, happy snapping.

I'm in an elevated position again. But this time, instead of looking at snow-covered mountains, I'm looking at the city center of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg (from the Stuttgart TV Tower).
For those who aren't familiar with the area, here are a few landmarks.
In the lower third of the image, on the left, you can see the Old Castle, and to its right (with the Ferris wheel in the courtyard) is the New Castle.
Further to the right, in the upper third, you can also see the seemingly endless construction site of Stuttgart's main train station.
And if you're already familiar with the area, you'll surely find many more interesting sights.

My hometown, Schoonhoven, has a moat. In early days, it enclosed the old city center, as a protection against intruders. Together with the city walls it was almost impossible to conquer the city.
Nowadays, part of the moat is gone, but a small part of it is still be visible. Even the star-shaped form is visible on maps.
Almost five years ago, the counsil of Schoonhoven agreed to construct a bandstand on the water. It forms a stage for a broad spectrum of music bands. From the adjacent park, you have a perfect view on the bandstand and you can enjoy the atmosphere.
This photo is taken from across the moat, in the direction of the park, the bandstand and the Great St. Bartholomew Church of Schoonhoven.

Minutes after arrival with the 1822 from Dingwall, the locomotive has already uncoupled from it's short take of Mark 1 and 2 coaches and is about to run around prior to pushing the coaches back into the station ready for the next departure.
Those viewers that know Kyle may be wondering about my viewpoint for taking this photograph. In the summer of 1989 I was working on a ship that returned to Kyle each evening and moored at the quay next to the station, and this is taken from the bridge of the MV Northern Horizon... no pole necessary!
At this time services from Kyle were unable to reach Inverness due to the collapse of the Ness Viaduct a few months earlier ( see flic.kr/p/2aErgVU). Consequently, trains were running only as far as Dingwall with passengers being taken by bus to Inverness.
Not the best position for a picture but there were so many people around, that I was lucky to get this photo with only a few people in it.

The sun was in the perfect position to rise between the mountains for sunrise, but that was just one element. I had taken a few photos of the tree the evening before and the water was perfectly still, lovely reelections with a few clouds in the sky. Fast forward 12 hours and it was windy with hardly any clouds in the sky. Luckily i'd set up an hour before sunrise and managed to get a bit of the early morning colour.
Treating a flower like a person means to take a portrait shot. This image was created by shooting through a frame (lead in this case) and by using five LED spotlights in various positions. I had to go indoors as there is currently too much wind outside. Processed in Fujifilm's raw converter and macOS High Sierra photo editor.
