The Roman Pool at Hearst castle is a tiled indoor pool decorated with eight statues of Roman gods, goddesses and heroes. The pool appears to be styled after an ancient Roman bath such as the Baths of Caracalla in Rome c. 211-17 CE. The mosaic tiled patterns were inspired by mosaics found in the 5th Century Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, Italy. They are also representative of traditional marine monster themes that can be found in ancient Roman baths. The statues are rough copies of ancient Greek and Roman statues. One such copy represents the “Apoxyomenos.” Statuary was used on a considerable scale in the Baths of Caracalla.

I used to photograph a lot of water polo games and it was hard to separate games, so I got into the habit of photographing an object(s) at rest between games so I knew where one was finished and another started. Just as an aside, this photo was shot at 1/640 @F4 with a 300/4 at an ISO of 6400. The pool was incredibly dark.
Bullfrogs and Butterflies was the kids pool party theme for a 7 year old birthday party. Frog splash balls and butterfly dive rings provided lots of creativity for swimming pool games to play.
For Throwback Thursday. This was taken in the summer of 2005 or 2006 at a swimming pool in Lubbock. The little boy in the photo is my son. Sadly, this octopus mural painting is no longer there, although I think that the swimming pool is still in business.
The library hosted a swim party for all kids 6-18 who had read over 30 books in the Texas Reading Club. There was fun in the Friendswood pool, plus grilled hot dogs by the Boy Scouts and popsicles for everyone!
