After spending a few days in the Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt and Chiloe Island areas of the North Chilean Patagonian Los Lagos Region we flew to Balmaceda in southern eastern Patagonian Chile, located just 4 kilometres from the Chile Argentina border.
Balmaceda, founded in 1917, was a very small town of approximately 500 people with a disproportionately important airport considering the towns size, in the Aysén Region of Patagonian Chile.
After leaving Balmaceda we passed through cleared farmland but then came into the Rio Simpson Valley with steep slopes & cliffs and several waterfalls of note along the route known as the Carretera Austral. One of the two main waterfalls, a 20m falls called the Bridal Veil Falls is shown above.
While in Coyhaihue I saw a poster of this waterfall, fully frozen in winter, truly a sight to behold.
Salto Rio Pollux waterfall is located between Valle Simpson and Cerro Divisadero.
Latitude: 45° 41' 2.4" (45.684°) south
Longitude: 72° 3' 23.1" (72.0564°) west
Average elevation: 349 metres (1,145 feet)
The other falls further along the road, the Virgin Falls or Cascada de Virgin Falls (El Salto de la Virgen) were equally impressive.
The town of Coyhaihue, located 55km north west of Balmaceda, with its 40,000 people was founded in 1929 and services the the Carretera Austral and the the Rio Simpson Valley on the Eastern side of the Andes Mountains. The Rio Simpson Valley was largely cleared of much of its native rainforest cover for farming purposes in the early 1900's.
In the remaining heavily vegetated areas along the steeper slopes the flora was composed of coigĂŒe, tepa, mañĂo, ciruelillo, canelo and tepĂș. You could also see chilco (fuchsia), which is the most abundant shrub in the area.
Our guide informed us that clearing of native vegetation was strongly encouraged by past Chilean governments who issued land grants on the proviso the land was cleared for farms.
After an hour or so in Coyhaique we moved on to Puerto Aysen then to Puerto Chacabuco from where we were to embark on a ship heading south via inside passage fjoirds over 5 nights to Quitralco Bay and thence to Lagua San Rafael and the San Rafael Glacier.
The shortest trip distance via Ruta 240 and Carretera Austral/Ruta 7 from Balmaceda to Puerto Chacabuco was 134km or 1 hour 57mins although we took all day to get there.
Power was out, but the moon was showing in the sky over Montreal along with the stars Pollux and Castor.

temple of castor+pollux, agrigento, sicily.
the corner of the temple of castor+pollux is the symbol of modern agrigento and not a bad choice at that. this is what tourists come for and why they began to arrive in the first place when the valley of temples below agrigento turned up as an option on the 18th century grand tour of upper class education.
condemned to repeat history as a travesty, we arrived 200 years later in a taxi alongside several coaches full of other tourists, all of us flashing our plastic cameras. the number of identical photos a single day must see does not bear considering - even if some are good, with the low evening sun turning the dark brown, volcanic stone into...well, into light brown, volcanic stone.
my only real apology is that these were my first greek temples. and yet, not quite...when the british first arrived, the temples were nowhere to be seen. they had to dig out the stones and actually erected the corner of the temple we see today. helping the site to match expectations, they nevertheless mismatched parts and seemingly even brought together pieces from more than one temple: the greeks never knew the corner as it stands, but clearly it would be commercial suicide to take it down.
buildings make invisible forces in society manifest, even in their ruin, although naively, I had dreamt of meeting the temples unmediated.
so what are we really looking at here apart from british amateur archaeology? I found the background - supposedly the old hill town - intriguing. not only is the hill town barely visible, but there is something haphazard about the growth of modern agrigento. it turns out that the town has been one of the hardest hit by mafia activity which in turn means that the area was one of the most neglected. construction, which is where you find big money locally, must have been badly infected. building permits, anyone?
a 180 years ago, stendhal tellingly compared sicily to ireland, two naturally rich islands that could support large populations but whose nobility would never dream of spending time there, preferring rome or london to home. the islands were mismanaged to the point of starvation. there is theory that the mafia originated in the gangs that kept order while the ruling classes were away. it goes some way to explaining how the mafia could operate as a state within the state if that was its intended role to begin with. the authorities behind the planning are not necessarily the planning authorities.
it is to those other local heavies, the christians, we must turn to understand the ruinous foreground of the image. I could have said earthquakes, since the christians have received so much help from below, but many good buildings stand up to earthquakes and the temples were very well constructed. somebody wanted them in the ground.
the early centuries of christianity as a recognized religion were optimistic. if this seems strange considering that the roman empire which did the recognizing was coming to its protracted and painful end, it is only because we lie to ourselves about our religious origins. the christians had been promised the end of rome in the bible. in fact, they had been promised the end of the world. it would mark the second coming of christ, and they longed for it. to get things going, the early christians tore down greek and roman buildings with a fervour that makes the taliban of bamyan look like conservationists.
the edicts of emperors ordering, asking, begging their converted populace not to eradicate their common heritage are still with us today, the buildings are not. however, soft readings of the bible tend to divert us from the eschatological core of western culture and we rutinely dismiss as nutters believers from the american heartland who remind us what is really in the good book.
the impulse to reduce christianity to the heroics of jesus at the stoning and paul's words on love to the corinthians - forgetting among so many other things paul's suggestion on what to do with women who pray without covering their hair only two chapters earlier - is a luxury admirers of ancient architecture are not allowed. destruction follows us from site to site.

Castor and Pollux in the constellation Gemini. Each image is about a 2 minute exposure at ISO800 using a 400mm lens. Some interesting tidbits from Burnham's Celestial Handbook: CASTOR - 23rd brightest star in the sky, just 4.5 degrees from Pollux, in Greek legend they were the sons of Leda and Zeus, depicted on many Roman and Greek coins. POLLUX - 17th brightest star in the sky, designated the beta star in Gemini but is actually brighter, 10-parsecs from Earth.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.
On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).
With visits now in excess of 18.897 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Nineteen metres at 12:45pm on Tuesday April 18th 2017, in front of the Tempio dei Dioscuri (Temple of the twins ), the Temple of Castor and Pollux located in Regione VIII Forum Romanum, seen here on the left.
Castor and Pollux (Kastor and Polydeuces) were twin brothers known as Dioscuri or dioskouroi, who's mother was Leda. Castor's father was Tyndareus, King of Sparta while Pollux was the divine son of Zeus. In Latin the brothers are known as Gemini or Castores, and when Castor was killed, Pollux asked Zeus to let hgim share his own immortality, thus they were transformed into the Constellation Gemini. They were seen as patrons of sailors, apopearing to them as St Elmo's fire (St Erasmus of Formia), and also associated with horsemanship.
To the right we see Tempio di Vesta (Temple of Vesta), one of the oldest known structures located in the Roman Forum, once a storehouse for legal wills, documents of Roman Senators and cult objects including the Palladium. It is believed that the temple was built in the 7th century BCE by Numa Pompilius. Destroyed and rebuilt countless times, the current surviving section was reconstructed in the 1930's during the Dictatorship of Benito Mussolini, following it's complete destruction in 1549.
An adult entry fee in April 2017 is twelve Euros, which allows a two day pass into the Colosseum and nearby Palatine Hill.

Roman Forum (Foro Romano) - Temple of Castor and Pollux
The Roman Forum was the center of ancient Rome, and today is one of most complex ruins in the world.
Just across the way from the ruins of the temple of Vesta and the House of the Vestals are 3 huge columns rising into space, seen in the picture above. They are all that is left of the Temple of Castor and Pollux. It was an important structure for centuries.
In Greek mythology, Castor and Pollux were the twin sons of Zeus. -http://maitaly.wordpress.com/tag/capitoline-hill/

Due to maintenance works on the normal route via Arnhem, Emmerich and the Ruhrgebiet, the international trains between the Netherlands and Germany (and further) were rerouted via Venlo, Eindhoven and 's-Hertogenbosch. As such, CityNightLine no. 418 «Pollux» from MĂŒnchen Hbf (D) and «Pegasus» from ZĂŒrich HB (CH) are passing Meteren behind loco 1737. Note the three seater coaches behind the loco: these constitute IC 60478 from Basel SBB to Duisburg Hbf (or in this case rather Köln Hbf, given the rerouting). They do, however, cover the entire distance from Basel to Amsterdam and back: they are just closed off between Duisburg (Köln) and Amsterdam. Meteren, 20-04-2013.
NOW VIEWABLE AT ORIGINAL SIZE.
Castor and Pollux is a copy of an antique Roman statue. Apparently lots of sculptors made copies of it; this one is by Joseph Nollekens and is currently in the British Galleries in the V&A.
I would DEFINITELY be lying if I said I didn't photograph this view because of its apparent gay overtones and cute buttocks.

... at the top of the stairway on the right.
Two large statues of the Dioscuri twins stand at the top of the stairway that leads up to the Piazza del Campidoglio on Capitoline Hill. Most of the statue is a restoration/reconstruction dating to the 16th Century, but they include fragments found at the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Roman Forum.
Castor and Pollux, were 'youths of Zeus' (from the Grrek, 'Dioskouroi'). They are said to be the twin sons of Zeus/Jupiter; the 'Gemini' which means twins in Latin. They are also associated with horses and horsemanship; 'horse tamers' was one of their honorifics.
The many monuments in prominent locations to Castor and Pollux that you encounter in Rome and Italy is because they are said to have helped the Roman Republic in its victory over the last King of Rome.
They were the heroic cavalry twins. They were said to have lead the cavalry at the front of the Roman army at Battle of Lake Regillus in 495 BC, and later brought news of the victory to Rome.
The current statues of the Gemini twins replaced the ones placed here by Michelangelo
