Facing the Palazzo Quirinale are two huge statues of the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux. They are part of the Monte Cavallo Fountain (aka Fontana dei Dioscuri) and were taken from the Baths of Constantine. They are ancient Roman copies of Greek originals.
The prominence of Castor and Pollux in public places in Italy is large part because they are believed to have helped the Roman Republic in its victory over the last King of Rome in 495 BC.

The Temple of Castor & Pollux was first built in celebration of the victory at the Battle of Lake Regillus in 495 BCE and was dedicated to the Gemini twins. The temple was reconstructed twice over the centuries, but fell into disuse during the 4th century late Roman Empire. There are no further historical references to the temple until the 15th century when only three columns of the original structure still stood. The adjacent street was then reverently renamed Via Trium Columnarum.
Just outside the Temple of Castor & Pollux along the Via Sacra were the Arch of Augustus, the Temple of Caesar, and the Round Temple of Vesta. Little remains of all four structures today as the Forum itself fell into disuse during the Middle Ages. It wasn’t until 1898 that the Italian government began to excavate the remains of the forum. The ruins were later opened to the public where, nowadays, the Roman Forum attracts more than 4.5 million visitors a year.

Castor and Pollux is a copy of an antique Roman statue. Apparently lots of sculptors made copies of it; this one is by Joseph Nollekens and is currently in the British Galleries in the V&A.
I would probably be lying if I said I didn't photograph this statue because of its apparent gay overtones.

The Drottningholm Palace (Swedish: Drottningholms slott) is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It is located in Drottningholm. Built on the island Lovön (in Ekerö Municipality of Stockholm County), it is one of Sweden's Royal Palaces. It was originally built in the late 17th century. It served as a residence of the Swedish royal court for most of the 18th century. Apart from being the private residence of the Swedish royal family, the palace is a popular tourist attraction.

I accidentally stumbled upon the very first folder of pictures I took with my camera. This shot was one of the very first, taken on April 1st, 2008 - a little after Pollux and Kashmir had their first birthday. :D (just noticed that was a lot of "firsts") I just fell in love with his curious little face.
Castor and Pollux

Castor and Pollux are twin half-brothers in Greek and Roman mythology, known together as the Dioscuri. Their mother was Leda, but they had different fathers. Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, while Pollux was the divine son of Zeus, who seduced Leda in the guise of a swan.
Castor is the second-brightest star in Gemini. It has the Bayer designation α Geminorum, which is Latinised to Alpha Geminorum. With a visual magnitude of 1.58, it is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. Castor is actually a sextuple star system organized into three binary pairs.
Pollux is the brightest star in the constellation Gemini. It has the Bayer designation β Geminorum, which is Latinised to Beta Geminorum. It is an evolved red giant at a distance of 34 light-years, making it the closest red giant (and giant star) to the Sun.
Sigma Geminorum (σ Gem) is a binary star system. It is visible to the naked eye with a magnitude 4.20 at 125 light-years.

... at the top of the stairway on the left.
Two large statues of the Dioscuri twins stand at the top of the stairway that leads up to the Piazza del Campidoglio on Capitoline Hill. Most of the statue is a restoration/reconstruction dating to the 16th Century, but they include fragments found at the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Roman Forum.
Castor and Pollux, were 'youths of Zeus' (from the Grrek, 'Dioskouroi'). They are said to be the twin sons of Zeus/Jupiter; the 'Gemini' which means twins in Latin. They are also associated with horses and horsemanship; 'horse tamers' was one of their honorifics.
The many monuments in prominent locations to Castor and Pollux that you encounter in Rome and Italy is because they are said to have helped the Roman Republic in its victory over the last King of Rome.
They were the heroic cavalry twins. They were said to have lead the cavalry at the front of the Roman army at Battle of Lake Regillus in 495 BC, and later brought news of the victory to Rome.
The statues of the Dioscuri twins that are currently here replaced those chosen by Michelangelo. Those are now at Piazza Quirinale.

In Latin called: Templum Castorum or Aedes Castoris, and in Italian: Tempio dei Dioscuri. Of the original eight Corinthian columns three remains.
The remains seen today are mostly from the third incarnation of the temple, built in 6 A.D. by Tiberius. The reason for that was that the one before that, built in 117 B.C. Lucius Caecilius Metellus Dalmaticus, had burnt down. And that one had in its turn replaced the first one, built around 484 B.C. after the victory at the battle of Lake Regillus (Regillus lacus) where Castor and Pollux is said to have appeared helping the Romans to victory. The place for the temple is also based on a legend, after the victory the twins were (supposedly) spotted watering their horses at the Spring of Juturna which was located here, and this was seen as a sign as this being the right place to build the temple.

After spending a few days in the Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt and Chiloe Island areas of the North Chilean Patagonian Los Lagos Region we flew to Balmaceda in southern eastern Patagonian Chile, located just 4 kilometres from the Chile Argentina border.
Balmaceda, founded in 1917, was a very small town of approximately 500 people with a disproportionately important airport considering the towns size, in the Aysén Region of Patagonian Chile.
After leaving Balmaceda we passed through cleared farmland but then came into the Rio Simpson Valley with steep slopes & cliffs and several waterfalls of note along the route known as the Carretera Austral. One of the two main waterfalls, a 20m falls called the Bridal Veil Falls is shown above.
While in Coyhaihue I saw a poster of this waterfall, fully frozen in winter, truly a sight to behold.
Salto Rio Pollux waterfall is located between Valle Simpson and Cerro Divisadero.
Latitude: 45° 41' 2.4" (45.684°) south
Longitude: 72° 3' 23.1" (72.0564°) west
Average elevation: 349 metres (1,145 feet)
The other falls further along the road, the Virgin Falls or Cascada de Virgin Falls (El Salto de la Virgen) were equally impressive.
The town of Coyhaihue, located 55km north west of Balmaceda, with its 40,000 people was founded in 1929 and services the the Carretera Austral and the the Rio Simpson Valley on the Eastern side of the Andes Mountains. The Rio Simpson Valley was largely cleared of much of its native rainforest cover for farming purposes in the early 1900's.
In the remaining heavily vegetated areas along the steeper slopes the flora was composed of coigüe, tepa, mañío, ciruelillo, canelo and tepú. You could also see chilco (fuchsia), which is the most abundant shrub in the area.
Our guide informed us that clearing of native vegetation was strongly encouraged by past Chilean governments who issued land grants on the proviso the land was cleared for farms.
After an hour or so in Coyhaique we moved on to Puerto Aysen then to Puerto Chacabuco from where we were to embark on a ship heading south via inside passage fjoirds over 5 nights to Quitralco Bay and thence to Lagua San Rafael and the San Rafael Glacier.
The shortest trip distance via Ruta 240 and Carretera Austral/Ruta 7 from Balmaceda to Puerto Chacabuco was 134km or 1 hour 57mins although we took all day to get there.
