I love how her eyes look in this. She watched me snap the Polaroid of her brother with the ring pop and all she had was a bowl of pretzels but it worked.

When I look at my ancestry, I'm a lot of things, but of the things I am, the thing I am the most is Ukrainian. My grandmother was born there. My grandfather's father was ethnically Ukrainian from an area that's now Poland. We were very close to that side of the family when I was growing up.

My photography has felt trivial lately. I have been obsessed with the war. So when it came time for Polaroid Week, I wanted to do something different. First I tried shooting things that were blue and yellow (the colors of Ukraine's flag). Some cookies I bought. The tryzub sticker on my car. Old boxes of Polaroid film (the Paul Giambarba boxes of 669 had a yellow-ish wrapper). Those photos didn't work.

Then I remembered that Polaroid had yellow film. And blue film.

If you go to the Polaroid site, they're out of the Yellow 600 film. But it was made recently enough that places like B&H still had some. So I got some. The integral Blue 600 film hasn't been made in a few years. But in my stash, I still had one pack of Polaroid 100 Blue pack film.

This is what I did with one underexposed shot from that pack of Blue that I shot with my Polaroid 195 Land Camera. I shot a pure white background with my SLR 680 and paired it with the nearly solid shot of Blue, and you get a Ukrainian flag from that.

Ukraine needs help. Razom for Ukraine is a reputable charity that started when Ukrainian-Americans wanted to help Ukraine during the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. They send humanitarian aid to Ukraine, including medicine, hospital supplies, and communications equipment. You can find them at razomforukraine.org/ .

Last shot from my favorite local outsider art installation. Another shot I thought would be a throwaway that actually kinda worked.

In Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Don’t even know if this is still there… but I liked the mural of the tree with the tree next to it all wrapped up in lights. One of my attempts at a handheld night shot.

The light was incredible when we pulled in to the Neahkahnie overlook on 101. I may have run across the parking lot to take photos. Twice.

Polaroid Week reject since it’s just my son. Sadie was scared to stand with him. This was from our stay at Buchanan Resort last October when I won some time out there. Need to book another weekend stay out there, so peaceful and lovely!

On September 28th 2023, one of my bestest friends and a sister from another mother to me, got engaged to her the love of her life and high school sweetheart! I was blessed with getting to shoot their engagement photos. Naturally with it being my 1st engagement, I had to incorporate some instant film somehow. You can’t see the beautiful moss agate ring here very well but it is still a meaningful image. This took place at the beautiful Green Acres Farm in Milan, TN who always have super cute pumpkin patches and beautiful pumpkins!

I think I was the only person out yet that morning. It was July 16th and 34 degrees. Doesn't look that cold, does it?
