so, I'm all packing and stuff, because I leave to drive across the country for college in 3 days.

I can't hardly believe it! I'm going to miss everyone out here in Colorado so much.

and I'm kind of nervous, picture wise.

I'm going to be minoring in Photography at school, and the book for the class is so super easy, it's not even funny. chapter one is basics, like how to put your memory card in your camera. so I'm not concerned about my ability, but more of how much artistic liberties I'm going to be able to take.

I'm not going to school for Photography, otherwise I would have picked a more intense school photography wise, I'm going for Biblical Counseling. so the main thing is, I dont know how much they're going to want me to do things "by the book" there for Photography, and so anyways...

long story short, I have no idea how much more or how often I'll be posting to Flickr. I'll have to wait and see how that whole photo class goes. cause it's not like I'm going to have a lot of privacy to take self portraits in my dorm room! =P

so... I'm a little nervous about all of that that I just typed, which probably doesn't even make sense. not majorly concerned, but I had to explain my thought process at least a little bit.

and I sent out most of the prints! so keep an eye on your mail. ;)

Amazing what the surface tension of water is able to do. One would expect the drop to just flow away.

I took this capture with my good old Nikon D7000 and the stunning Tokina 100mm macro. I think this lense is even better than the Nikon 105mm macro (in terms of sharpness).

It is just a pity that the Tokina is not internally focused. The tube extends quite a bit while focusing. Thats a bit of a problem for me when I want to use my Metz M-15 macro flash. The flash is attached to the filter thread of the lense and extends with the tube while focusing. At least the whole setup does not rotate ;-)

I couldn't believe how close this Northern Harrier hen came to me. This was the last photograph before she was too close to keep in the viewfinder. I love her piercing eye contact! Shot at f8, 1/6400s, ISO 2500, 200-500mm@500mm

For the last few weeks I've been sorting through older photos, deleting the duplicates and bad ones, and trying to better organize the rest. In the process I've come across photos I'd never edited or shared, including this one taken all the way back in 2009. I was a total beginner back then, with my Nikon D90 and 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. I got some really nice photos with that combination, including this one.

But back then I didn't always understand why a photo turned out well, so I had a difficult time getting good photos consistently. And I shot everything in JPEG and never did any post-processing because why would I need to do that? Haha! Let's just say I've learned a whole lot since those early days. But this is still one of my favorite images,.

From a trip out to Pittenweem in the East Neuk, Fife, last week.

A long exposure using an ultra-thin circular polariser with a 2.1ND (7-stop) filter giving 9-stops of filtration with a grad over the sky to hold the highlights. Didn't have to correct the deep blue colour cast that you normally get with LE's as this is Formatt-Hitech's Firecrest filters.

There was big banks of low cloud over on the Lothian side of the Forth and more clearer skies overhead.

At El Enseuño, Quindío, Colombia.

We just returned from almost three months in Colombia, where we spent a lot of time observing and photographing birds at El Ensueño. The Bananaquits (Coereba flaveola) were all over the firebush. The image that I am posting here shows the Bananaquit piercing the base of the firebush flower to extract nectar.

Hamelia patens, or Firebush, is a flowering bush that attracts hummingbirds. The Bananaquit, too, is drawn to the plant for its nectar. The Bananaquit feeds on insects and nectar from flowers, but unlike hummingbirds, it uses its pointed beak to pierce the base of flowers. This method of taking nectar avoids contact with the stamen and therefore results in no transfer of pollen.

Piercy was adopted by Marian. He has met the other bears. Peter especially thinks he's cool!

PETER:

You're cool Piercy. I want to look like you. Can I borrow a piercing from you for my nose?

PIERCY:

PETER:

OLEG:

Peter!!!!!!!!! What have you done? Do you have a piercing in your nose????

PETER:

Don't be silly Oleg. It is not in the nose but around the nose.

OLEG:

I don't like it at all.

PETER:

You're getting old Oleg

OLEG:

I'm not old

PETER:

You act like an old bear.

OLEG:

Well... thank you

now do I mean my eyes or my piercings?

Piercing Gaze - In good news, I was able to find a new Bobcat at a new location while hiking the trails recently. It had been over 2 months since I saw my last Bobcat back in April so this was great! This Bobcat also was very comfortable with me and walked just a few feet from me in the dappled evening light.

I was thrilled that this Bobcat appears to be a female, as this means that her territory will be smaller and her movement patterns will be more localized than males. Consequently, she will be easier to find and photograph than a male would.

I was actually able to locate her by listening to mockingbird alarm calls about a quarter mile away. My vision isn't the greatest, so relying on various alarm calls from Great-blue Herons, Crows, Ravens, Squirrels, Rabbits etc. has really improved my success rate in finding this species over the past year. Bobcats are one of the most difficult subjects to photograph. Unlike raptors, they lack site fidelity to small areas, and unlike paparrazzi'd foxes/bears they do not habituate and prefer avoiding people. Every time you feel like you get a hang of tracking them, they humble you and disappear for months on end. However, in my eyes photographing a species such as the Bobcat is what wildlife photography is truly about: learning about natural history, avoiding crowding the animal, and connecting to the environment with all your senses.

Species: Bobcat (Lynx rufus)

Location: Northern California, CA, USA

Equipment: Nikon D850 + Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 ED VR, Handheld

Settings: 1/500s, ISO: 1000, f/6.3 @330mm, +0.3 EV

Within forty minutes between 06.30am and 07.10am five freights, all hauled by different locomotive classes passed through Gdansk station. I am not used to such a density of freight workings, however the close proximity to the various ports in the area no doubt had a good deal to do with the explanation.

Taken through sunroom windows...

Late aftrenoon sun pieces the blue haze to illuminate the 3 Sisters. This oft photographed sandstone structure stands out from the cliff edge in the Blue Mountains National Park.

The hills and valleys get their name from the permanent blue haze that lies over the valley. This is thought to be from the eucalyptus oli in the air from the gum forests which cover this area. Over 100 varieties of Eucalyptus are found in this park.

Sexy Girl with Piercing Dragon Tattoo in comic book

This one was special, I mean really special. I almost didn’t go up North at all. I was tired, I didn’t feel like doing photography, I didn’t feel like driving 4 hours, or sleeping in a 45 degree car for 12 hours either. It didn’t seem worth it, but I pushed to go anyway. I had planned to watch the sunset here and I quickly hiked up and waited around an hour as the sun filtered in and out and as the clouds blew in. Then, this moment happened. It was getting dark, the sun was close to setting, and then the sun pierced through a tiny opening in the clouds. Everything was lit up in the warm light. Every bit of darkness was gone. This makes me think of how the Light of Jesus pierces through the darkness and the darkness could not comprehend it! For He is the Light of the world and it is His love that breaks through the darkest of places! I praise God that He uses His creation to demonstrate to us His wonderful promises and His very nature. He is Light, He is Love, He is Powerful and the darkness could not comprehend Him or stop Him. Light always triumphs over darkness!

I had to take it out because my nose is too crooked and you could see it when it was flipped up on one side :( huge bummer.
