Traditional thanksgiving (or Christmas!) fare - with a twist of maple.

PUMPKIN & MAPLE PIE

-------------------------------------------

* 1 - 10" pie crust (see below for pie crust recipe)

1 & 1/2 cups pure mashed pumpkin

1/2 cup pure (not artificial!) maple syrup

1 cup milk

2 eggs lightly beaten

2 tablespoons flour

1 & 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp ginger

1/2 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 425 F°

Mix together pumpkin, syrup, milk and eggs. Beat the mixture until smooth. Stir in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the pie crust.

Bake approx 40 mins. until center of pie is firm and a knife can be inserted into center and comes out dry.

Let it rest for at least 1/2 hr before serving.

Best served with a scoop of ice cream, or whipped cream

Bon appetit!

* RECIPE & INSTR FOR SINGLE PIE CRUST

-------------------

1-1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1/3 cup shortening (I use tenderflake lard for all my pie-crust recipes)

1/4 tsp salt

4-5 tablespoons of cold water

Mix together your flour & salt. Cut in your shortening/lard with a pastry blender until pieces are approx pea-size.

Slowly add your water 1 tbsp at a time until dough starts to stick together. Form into a ball, then roll out on a floured surface to about 11" inches or so. Use a rolling pin to transfer and unroll onto a 9" pie (or flan) plate.

Fold under the extra dough, and flute the edges if you wish.

Twister pi, a math version of the game Twister.

Happy Rounded Pi Day (3.1416)

Pick-up coins, a large scale logic problem.

Today is Pi Day in America. This is because they use a quaint inside out way of giving the date:

month/day/year

Thus, for them, today is 3.14 and of course those are the first three digits of the constant π (pi - the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle … C=πd)

For those of us in the UK, who write the date:

day/month/year

we can celebrate Pi Approximation Day on the 22nd of July i.e. 22/7 which will be another chance to eat apple pie - who could resist ... thanks of the idea Ewa :)

The hereios of the We're Here! group have paid a visit to the Pi Day group today at evaxebra's suggestion.

As always, I make pi patches for pi day (as well as any other time during the year), but I have some in my shop at the moment, as well as the 'make your own pi patch' listing.

See profile for details.

The "Throwing Pi" station. A more active rendition of the Buffon's Needle problem where glowsticks and frisbees are thrown to experimentally determine the value of pi given that the probability that a stick will land on a line is 1/pi.

Seeing as how it's pi day (well, not really over here, only in America where they get the dates wrong...) I thought about doing a pie photo. But I have no pie, and ran out of time to make one, so I made an apple pi!

Pi day!

It's actually a tart, but I figure that's like a flatter pie.
