3/14 is Pi day. It seems appropriate to eat pie. Therefore, quiche!

73/365: 14 March 2013

Spent a wonderful National Pi Day with the beautiful @dusttrace ! We started off with lunch at Roli Roti at the Ferry Building Farmers Market! We both went for the gorgeous Porchetta Sandwich!! Delicious rotisserie Pork loin roll wrapped in pork belly (yes! You read correctly!) w/ onion marmalade, curly cress & rosemary sea salt on an Acme sweet Deli roll! Amazing!! The pork was so tender & tasty - but crispy skin as well!! What?!?! I also had the CaraCara Blood Orange Aqua Fresco! The only thing I completely spaced on was getting the potatoes!! Drat!! I was overwhelmed by all the porky goodness when I got to the front of the line! You know, kinda like when you get the chance to meet that really cute guy/girl and your mind goes blank? Yeah, kinda like that. But I got the sandwich, and that's all that counts! (oh! Btw, @holagato @superlumberjack this is what I wanted you guys to have when you came! So we'll have to go again!) I wish this sandwich was like Pi and never-ending! #porchettasandwich #caracarabloodorangeaquafresco #roliroti #foodtruck #farmersmarket #sfferrybuilding @ferrybldgsf #ferrybldgsf #ferrybuildingsf #ferrybuildingfarmersmarket #food #myedibleworld #heavenonearth #gorgeouspork #piday

Apple pie from Jack's Deli in University Heights, Ohio. I had this after some beet borscht and chicken soup with kreplach.

one and a half pounds of mushrooms plus two onions, versus one cup of custard. FIGHT.

Happy pi day, everyone!

To try to understand the true significance of this day, I first needed to understand the meaning of the thing it is celebrating. So, I went to one of my more scholarly friends (Blackberry) and inquired into the nature of the holiday's namesake. The first thing I asked was, naturally, "what does this pie taste like?"*

When he heard that, he declared me an embarrassingly unlearned pup and set about giving me a passionate mathematical lesson. Within minutes every scrap of paper within paw's reach was covered in numbers and my mind was swimming with all the things Blackberry was trying to squeeze into it.

After a while, (I'm not sure if it's because he noticed the aghast expression on my face, or if it was because he had run out of slips of paper... though I think it was the latter) he slowed to a stop. Looking over the various notes scattered around us, he admitted that he hadn't exactly taken the most direct route in my tutoring, but he thought this gave a more general, fool-proof, informative definition.

And here I was thinking it was a day dedicated to dessert!

*I think part of me was willing it to be chocolate pie (my favorite!) but I didn't want to get my hopes up.

New Flickr rule: On the international pi day you got to post a shot that either somehow can be associated with the coolest number in math or one of the coolest scientist who have lived, since he managed to be born on this day.

My shot this year is of the old building that used to house the local branch of Norway's national bank. Now it houses art galleries who have taken the name 3.14 (I made a

note :-).

Your guys got a year to think up some :-)

Cupcakes made in honor of a friend who has a Pi Day Birthday! Vanilla cupcakes, cherry pie filling and vanilla buttercream piped as the "piecrust". :)

Branching out for this year's pi(e) party, and trying something new! Recipe from the Moosewood desserts cookbook. Also made pecan pie, because my dad sends me the best pecans.

One of these things is not like the other...

I have to say, though, that since installing the just-for-grins 7-ball shifter, I now get it about the Voodoo shift knob. I've always had more-or-less cylindrical shifters, or the old classic "teardrop" shape: flat on top, tapering to the size of the shift rod below. The solid sphere feels good to operate, as you can give it the same grip from almost any angle. Flat palm on top? No problem. Fingers around the side? Works great.

And I love the bronze bushing that serves as the spacer between the ball and the leather shift boot. Aside from adding some much-needed color to the black plastic interior, it has a "found object" character that goes really well with the vibe I have in mind for this car.

Pi, pie and circles...

Today is Pi Day. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159 (hence March 14, or 3/14 being designated Pi Day).

According to the official Pi Day web site (www.piday.org/) "Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern."

In honor of pi day (3/14) . . .

(This is the first pie I've made in about 22 years, as I hate cooking and am horrible at it . . . my family still can't quite believe I actually baked)

Took the shot as the pie was exploding everywhere! Part of Father Lacombe High School "Pi Day" Festivities!

Pi day was a complete success at Father Lacombe! We raised over 150$ in pie throwing sales for malaika's friend Brianne who was diagnosed with cancer. Mr. Gowans, Svoboda, Marchetto and Shannon Participated willingly to get pied by various students. It was extremely messy and I even got pwned. A great big thank you goes out to Karli's Dad who donated the whipped cream, Mr.Falcone the shop teacher who helped us make the back board and all who helped make this day possible. Even though this is my last year at lacombe, I hope it will be a tradition the IB's will contine to follow.

Recorded statistics for the "Throwing Pi" station, an technique of determining pi experimentally. A rendition of the Buffon's Needle problem.

Went to the Ostrich Festival just for something to do and got rocked by one of the great rock bands. Total kick ass surprise.
